I get that but how does the waiver thing come in - to show who's interested?
Covering all their bases
If they can trade him and get assets in return, great… if not, he’s sent down.
No one is taking him at full value through the waivers, so there’s no risk of losing him for nothing

Is it possible to get him at 1.75??
Say send something decent to Sj and something decent to a team with a ton of cap space over the next cpl season to retain an other 50%
I would try it. He is a good hockey player…putting all the BS aside!

Honestly even with the baggage, I think Kane at $3.5 million is worth the gamble.

He's a monkeys paw type of player . At some point he will do something dumb and the move will backfire. The question is how long it takes to happen and not if it happens.

For me, would need to be contingencies in place.

Kane at 50%
Plus a 1st rounder
Plus a conditional 2nd rounder

If he plays 55+ games each of the next 2 seasons then there is no 2nd rounder

If he plays less (assuming he gets waived or is a locker room issue) then team acquires a 2nd.

the attached 1st is for the risk

I think if you’re a younger team without notable or weak leadership (Leafs, Hurricanes, Panthers, NYR, Nucks, etc) it’s not worth the risk to ruin what you’ve been building by having him infect the team.

However if you’re a team on its last legs, or close to it, of contending And have strong leaders in the room (Boston, Wash, Pitts, NYI even) then it’s worth the risk. These players can keep him in check and you get a 1st line W for peanuts.

The fact that a team is willing to retain that much for that long should be a huge red flag for any acquiring team. This is his 3rd stop in the NHL and teams are happy to see him go.

They are willing to do it so they are only on the hook for up to 50% of his salary, compared to all 7m x 4 years....thats 3.5m x 4yrs = 14m in savings for the owner if they can find a suiter. Sharks ideally probably don't want to take on cap back, but ANY team willing to take the chance on Kane SHOULD be sending a contract back with 2-3m salary

cant see a canadian team taking him even if it is a great deal for strictly publicity reasons . This seems like a smaller U.S. market that is in cup contention type of move . Carolina maybe Florida

There is zero reason for the Sharks not to just sit him and buy him out compared to taking this deal. The Sharks will not be dealing futures to get rid of Kane, though they might take on someone else's bad contract.

I think the Sharks are more likely to hire a hitman than to do this idiotic deal.

Wishful thinking, but highly unlikely to happen. They could send him to Arizona for less than full retention probably with a pick likely not a 1st but would all depend on the trade details of course.

Can't see Canucks bringins this player and his distraction into the organization at this time...they have their own mess to sort out with firing management and coaching

I don't see why the Sharks would retain max and attach several assets. If noone is interested at 50% retention then they'll probably just buy him out and keep their picks.
