You cannot definitively say there was no head contact from that angle.

I don't think I can effectively argue this with you. I will say, I'm a massive Oilers fan but I am no homer.

I will ask, what is your opinion of the gif? Does it look like there is head contact to you? Does it look like McDavid meant to make contact with his head? Does Coutures reaction seem genuine to you?

This is more the point I'm arguing and I'm honestly curious.

He's been hit high more than once and has a facial injury that people thought he would miss the playoffs with. I really don't even get how this is a discussion.

Can't argue the first two points there.

But, you said yourself McDavid "skated into his face". Do you really believe that? You think based on the video that there is contact to his face/head and that McDavid did this intentionally? Really?

Should have been a penalty on the play for interference maybe but that's no head / face shot.

I don think he targeted. usually the skater will brace themselves better prior to the hit but it kinda looks like David was surprised he clipped him.

I also think the shoulder pads could have easily clipped couture, and if they did given the state of his mouth, could easily cause that reaction.

Soooo tough for a ref. I dont think any party is to blame.

This I can certainly see.

Honestly, playing through that injury is pretty intense. Just turning your head the wrong way and breathing causes pain so minor contact to the wrong spot could cause a reaction that would look like a dive in normal circumstances.

I'm an Oilers fan so take this for what it's worth.

Yeah, I'd hit the deck too if I took a spear in the junk. Drai deserved the penalty and to be sent off for the game. I think these plays are complete garbage, have no place in the game and should be suspendable 100% of the time but unfortunately the NHL thinks different.

Is this the play you're thinking? If so I'm going to have to disagree with you here. Watch closely. McDavid didn't initiate contact, was looking the other way and most importantly made absolutely no contact with his head. Couture deserves props for playing through that injury, it's no joke but the head snap is a bit much here, no?

Honestly, you probably just shouldn't post here while this series is happening, especially not if you're going to come argue with us, even if you're being civil. Nothing good will come of it even if you do have good intentions.

This is like if I went on your board and said "you guys think you're getting jobbed by the refs? Check out the non-call they just made on Tom Wilson's hit on Morgan Reilly that resulted in a goal.

I'm not doing that, because it's pointless, there is no good discussion to come of that on your board. I may say it on the main board thread, but not here. I mean, what do you expect? Sharks fans to say "oh, yeah, you're right, our player totally took a dive on a play where the face on his contact was minimal; the fact that his face was completely destroyed by a puck and is extremely sensitive is irrelevant"?

I've been very outspoken about the fact that I believe the Oilers' new "toughness" is hurting them more than it helps. Acquiring a bunch of goons like Lucic, Kassian, Maroon, etc will lead to your team taking stupid undisciplined penalties. In addition, when it comes to the benefit of the doubt, a team with those players doesn't get it. I believe that even if the refereeing has been in favor of San Jose (which it hasn't, your team is just chock full of undisciplined morons that have evidently worn off on your captain and 2nd best player), the reason for that is the Oilers won't get the benefit of the doubt on any calls due to them employing all these undisciplined goons.

I'm not going on your board saying any of this, though. There is nothing to gain from doing that. I'll say what I want to in the main board thread and I know there are plenty of Oilers fans in that thread to respond to my posts if I have questions.

But since you're here, I'll ask: do you not realize the Oilers are still getting away with a lot of crap? McDavid's incessant cross checking on Meier, for example, wasn't even called.

Why did Couture go down the tunnel if McDavid didn't make contact with him? Doesn't the caption on that gif say that he did?

Couture has definitely embellished in the past, but calling that one an embellishment (like Edmonton's media has) is ridiculous. Dude just had a major mouth injury. Any tap to the mouth is going to warrant a reaction.
Then again, the media is also whining and crying foul about not being able to practice before their scheduled time...

Well, that's like, your opinion man. I don't know what to tell you; I'm not trolling, I saw a comment I was curious about and had a gif to share that might shed some reality on the situation. Feel free to disagree.

This is like if I went on your board and said "you guys think you're getting jobbed by the refs? Check out the non-call they just made on Tom Wilson's hit on Morgan Reilly that resulted in a goal.

That's not really what I'm doing here though. As a fan of great hockey, I'm also a fan of the Sharks. I like the team a lot and I don't live in a black or white area of fandom where liking my favourite team precludes me from liking another, even when they are embroiled in a playoff series.

I mean, what do you expect? Sharks fans to say "oh, yeah, you're right, our player totally took a dive on a play where the face on his contact was minimal; the fact that his face was completely destroyed by a puck and is extremely sensitive is irrelevant"?

I was just countering the assertion that McDavid did this on purpose. I conceded that his head snap could have been 100% legit given the severe injury he's playing with.

You seem steamed for some reason but I agree with a lot of this, minus lumping McDavid and Drai in (despite his idiotic and dirty spear, he's a bing candidate). McDavid is playing playoff hockey and doing nothing different then any player on the Sharks. I prefer fast, skilled disciplined hockey. I like the Lucic signing alot but Kass and Maroon are not guys I'd have brought in.

Ok, I disagree. Again, I like the Sharks despite being an Oilers fan. If I follow the rules I'll post where I want. Feel free to report me though.

But since you're here, I'll ask: do you not realize the Oilers are still getting away with a lot of crap? McDavid's incessant cross checking on Meier, for example, wasn't even called.

This is an easy one. I do realize they are getting away with a lot.

But so are the Sharks. So is every other team in the NHL. It's the playoffs.

I think if you're honest with yourself you'll admit the Sharks have gotten away with their share of junk as well, it is what it is.

I also think that the level of discipline between the two teams is accurately represented in the disparity in called penalties though. The Oiler's have played consistently undisciplined and they are getting punished for it, as they should. Hopefully the Sharks plethora of PPGs smarten them up but I'm doubtful.

Look, I'm no homer. I don't think this is a jobbing by the refs or anything like that. I just want to talk hockey, argue about hockey, joke about hockey and I want to be able to to do that with fans of any team. I've been on the outside looking in for a decade and I'm happy to be here with something to say in April.

Hey man, I don't think you're doing anything wrong or against the rules, and since I'm not a mod I have no authority to tell you what to do. However, you're going to need to understand that MarleauApologist (and other Sharks fans) have every right to be 'testy' when an Oilers fan comes into our board to talk about refereeing, no matter how docile the exchange, for a couple of reasons.

The first is that literally every single thread about this series outside of the ones on the Sharks forum is filled with Oilers fans discussing the refs. I really would prefer if the Sharks' subforum remain a safe haven from any discussion of the refs from outside fans.

The second is that there is a serious history of Oilers fans specifically coming into our forum and being less than polite. Antagonistic might be the word I would choose.

TL;DR: You aren't doing anything wrong but you have to understand and respect why Sharks fans are ill-inclined to have 'a discussion about hockey' with you.

Yes to head contact. More mcdavid just not caring if he hits him or not. Yes considering he said it hurts to breathe. Happy?

You come over here basically accusing our player of diving and expect civil conversation.

I get it but I don't know what to say other then I never brought up the refs. I answered a question about the reffing in this series which I think has been fine. The Oilers have way more penalties. They should, they earned them.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I love the Oilers but I like the Sharks as well. I'd like to see them win a cup. There are several players on the team whose names I'd like to see engraved on it. Jumbo lifting a cup over his head would be something that would make me happy.

This is a space to talk about the Sharks. So I'd have liked to continue to come talk about the Sharks but whatever. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.

That elbow (which might have been a phantom one, it's hard to tell from that angle) isn't even what sent Couture down the tunnel. Before his tunnel visit he took the flat of a stick blade in the mouth along the boards. That absolutely did make contact. There was a replay of it on the HNIC broadcast shot through the glass where you could see that contact.

WRT McDavid, the highlight pack I saw this morning made specific note of McDavid's increased aggressiveness last night, which included an additional near-elbow that he pulled on Couture at the last minute, only to just barely skate by without contact (it wasn't the one in the gif). There were absolutely multiple incidents that looked like McDavid intentionally trying to get, shall we say, "questionable" hits or physicalities in on the Sharks players.

you come off as an okay enough guy but now's not a great time to go into opposing fanbases' boards because of how hyper-partisan the playoffs make people. Even discussing on the mainboards is hard. I asked a question about the Oilers PP and I got one actual response and like 3 overconfident blahblahs.

This highlight pack was ridiculous but commentary guy was reasonably unbiased.

This will be my last post unless someone specifically asks me a question. Enjoy your board and good luck in the rest of the series.

You never answered my question. Why would Couture have to go down the tunnel after that incident if there wasn't contact?

At what point in the series has a Sharks player cross checked the head of an Oilers player who was already down on the ground, the way that McDavid was doing last night? (Btw, there was no call on the play)

I haven't reported you because I know you're not breaking the rules and ultimately it's up to you to post here. But I'm just saying there really isn't much good to come of posting here telling us we are wrong about referees. I guarantee if you make a post on the main board and ask Sharks fans about their feelings on a certain play, plenty would respond. I may or may not be one of the first few.

Seriously, I do have one question. At what point in this series has a San Jose Shark player cross checked the back of the head of an Oilers player that was on the ground? And if you can point out an incident, there should be no penalty on the play, because there was no penalty when McDavid did it.

Thank you, bye. I've I have a question for oiler fans, I'll post it on the Oilers-Sharks thread in the Stanley Cup forum.

Kings fan coming late to say, "Ha ha, you beat the tar out of the Oil." Keep doing it and good luck.
