He “earned a spot” last season and how did that go? Preseason performance is meaningless at best and actively misleading at worst when it comes to judging a prospect’s NHL readiness.

The vast majority of 19 year old hockey players should not be in the NHL until they prove they can dominate a lower pro league. Eklund’s long term development is infinitely more important than winning games this season. If Trevor Zegras can begin his D+2 season in the AHL so can Eklund.
Last season went just fine. He got 9 games against NHL competition and I’m sure he learned a ton from it. Then they sent him back to Sweden where he could get some games and more importantly have time to add some muscle. Do you think it was a bad thing that he played those 9 games?

You say preseason game performance is meaningless but playing well in the AHL shows a young player is ready. The best players in the AHL are the ones that are busting their butt in preseason games trying to make their team. In fact, the best ones make their NHL teams so you don’t play against them in the AHL. Plus there are lots of veterans giving their all to try and remain NHL players or earn additional ice time.

You say the vast majority of 19 year olds aren’t ready for the NHL. I agree. I notice that you didn’t say all, so you know that some are ready. How do you think teams should determine who is ready? I think you should let them compete for the jobs in camp and preseason.

The team’s performance should have no bearing on whether Eklund is called up. The team’s performance doesn’t matter. They brought in vets to help change the culture but also just serve as cannon fodder while the prospects develop in the AHL. Eklund should only be called up if he’s one of the leading scorers in that league.
Eh. If they’re getting nothing from the one year vets they signed then I’d rather give him an extended look provided he’s already proven that he can dominate at the AHL level.

I say Eklund might have something like 9 G, 32 A in 65-70 games (if he starts the season in the A).

I wouldn't mind seeing Wiesblatt on a line with Eklund and/or Bordeleau. It felt like he was out there with a couple of lower-skill guys and decided he'd mostly just try to agitate last night without a real sense of what he should be doing. Maybe with some more talent next to him he could find a more useful role--he did have a really nice look to Hatakka on the doorstep, and he looked pretty quick out there.

But I do think this is a player who might need some strong coaching to help him figure things out better as he tries to make the jump to the next level. He needs to play a smarter, more focused, more engaged game. If he can do those things, he could be a useful third-line player, which wouldn't be the worst outcome for someone drafted where he was.

If anyone was curious who that beautiful woman behind the Sharks bench last night was I happen to know. She is the SJ Barracuda's new assistant athletic trainer, she is extremely talented and smart. And also my wife. I'm super proud of her!
