A 19 year old is sad he didn’t get what he wanted?!? We’ve ruined everything!

I’m sad he’s leaving too but he’s a kid — if he can’t handle this adversity, that alone will be problematic but I really doubt that’ll be the case. He’s bummed out and I’m sure he’s going to go back and do what he can to prove he belongs on this team.

IS that correct? Because I’d definitely love to see him back if they make the playoffs somehow (if he’s killing it in Sweden anyway).
I believe playoff games still count.
I also am really hoping sharks don’t make the playoffs. We’re not winning anything and I’d love a top 10 pick

I think this is the right move for his development. While he showed flashes of brilliance, there’s plenty more he needs to work on to play in a top role. I am excited to see him back next year with a chip on his shoulder and competing with Bordeleau, Gushchin, Weisblatt and Robbins for a spot. He should earn it.

A top 10 pick to pair with this upcoming group of prospects would certainly be another huge step in turning this team around but.. I have a feeling it ain’t happening. The team is playing with a renewed vigor and I don’t think Eklund was the key to that. I think if team defense keeps up and Meier, Couture, Dahlen, etc keep playing the way they have been, they’ll get in.

It has always been strictly NHL games played. But the only reason most people think the ahl counts is because it never fits someone that is eligible to play in the ahl.

The players are almost all strictly chl players that this rule is used on.
Mikko Rantanen is literally all anyone ever needs to look at to see how you can handle a Euro player in his first year after being drafted with respect to ELC slides. I said it here months ago, but somehow people are still missing that fact that AHL games don't matter for sliding ELCs.

I would like to add
2024-25
Last year of Kane and Burns contract
15 mil in cap

Also last year of
Eklund, Bordeleau, Robins/Wiesblatt/Gusch ELC contract

After that god knows what
Which begs the question of why the heck does it matter about sliding a year of his ELC? Whether he is making 925k or has signed his big deal by then, we're still saddled with some corpses with awful contracts at that point that will inhibit the ability to compete for anything (unless we can convince them all to become allergic to their gloves).

I definitely don’t disagree with that assessment. The top 10 pick is me being a tad bit hopeful to be honest. I have also enjoyed watching the team a lot this year so I have many mixed feelings no doubt.

I mean is it surprising he's sad? If getting sent back as a 19 year old rookies ruins his confidence and hurts his development long term then was he ever really going to be that good? No one knows what Wilson said to him before breaking the news. I can't imagine he wouldnt be disappointed but kids got a great career ahead of himself.

It's a good sign he is sad/disapointed (probably), somebody like a young Peter Forsberg would have been either crying or furious. ;-) Some guys may not be overly disapointed because they feel they are not good enough, William knows he is good enough, successful through his entire career, he believes in himself, thus he is disapointed.

I remember (video below) before Peter went to the NHL (when he was really young), he was almost crying after a loss and mad at the referee, he even said he wanted to punch him causing a lot of drama in the Swedish press. *LoL*. Forsberg when being told it's soon the (senior) World Championships "I don't give a sh*t, now I am going home for a shower." and you can clearly hear is almost crying. *LoL*

Story behind this: "Peter Forsberg was spectacular, he was about to win a swedish championship gold (SEL) for Modo almost by himself, Swedish hockey never witnessing such a prestigious individual performance from a young single player ever before, obviously he was disapointed when things went wrong."

I don’t know how well he would have held up for an entire 82 game season that’s a lot to expect from a 19 year old learning to play on a smaller rink. What happens if he really started to struggle at the halfway point? You send him down, lose that year of control and probably does more damage to his confidence than anything. My guess is they let him know prior to the season this was the plan.

he seems overjoyed

I wanted to cry for him. He held up his tears so well. So SAD!!!!!
This might be the last we ever see Eklund in a shark's uniform. I hope he takes disappointments in strides and improves on his game.
But if I was him I would demand a trade. I don't share the confidence many in here are feeling that he will be back as a shark.

Because if Eklund warrants a huge raise, it'll be nice to have a couple of those contracts expired at the same time.

Honestly, I'd be more concerned if he weren't upset like this. Shows his character; he may not be physically strong or imposing but he's determined and believes in himself. Now if he can go and play really well in Sweden he can come back demanding even more of himself.
