If he chose the shl then he himself is a moron. Ahl means he can still be called up to the nhl. Shl throws that all down the drain.
Unless they let him know he wouldn’t be playing another game since he’s already at 9.

Ah, so it burns in the AHL. Dang.

CapFriendly's Slide rule FAQ says AHL games don't count, but I was always under the impression that they did and that sliding only occurred if a player was playing outside of affiliated North American pro hockey (the NHL sphere of influence: NHL -> AHL -> Presumably ECHL too). So it was really only a thing for guys that stayed in Europe or played major junior (since having any kind of contract, even one you're not technically fulfilling, torches your NCAA eligibility.)

It has always been strictly NHL games played. But the only reason most people think the ahl counts is because it never fits someone that is eligible to play in the ahl.

The players are almost all strictly chl players that this rule is used on.

This has to be due to the stupid amount of forwards we have right? Signing Nieto/Cogs/Bonino, Dahlen sticking, Trading for Lane Pederson (oof), LeBanc not being traded, and of course Kane.

If we didn't sign those early offseason contracts I bet he'd still be here.

I doubt it. You don't make a decision for a prospect of Eklund's calendar on "well, we'd like to keep him but damned if we don't already have Lane Pederson and Nick Merkley."

You make the Eklund decision on its own and work the lesser guys around that. If they decided to keep him then they'd just have to figure out if that meant sending someone else to the Cuda or putting Pederson on waivers or whatever.

I agree it sucks to not see Eklund this season in teal, but Sharks cap space is going to be pretty bad for some time, so having Eklund, Bordeleau and Robins/Wiesblatt/Gusch on the same three years of ELC is just smart business for the Sharks. It was business decision, and I think as much as it hurts it was probably because of Kane and Vlasic contracts.

I would like to add
2024-25
Last year of Kane and Burns contract
15 mil in cap

Also last year of
Eklund, Bordeleau, Robins/Wiesblatt/Gusch ELC contract

After that god knows what

Very surprising and Eklund is apparently not hiding his dissapointment.

In the same way perhaps some kind of sign/proof that the Sharks having a really good team this season? (Either that or simply a wrong decision from the coaches)

Well, sometimes humiliation works, I believe Eklund will work super hard for Djurgården and prove he is NHL worthy.

I think it’s disappointing because he was one of the things that made this team fun to watch this year. It’s sad to lose an exciting player on a young team that’s playing well when that team was actively difficult to cheer for the last 2. But I do think, if we’re being honest with ourselves, Eklund needs more seasoning.

Still, it’s a bummer and I’m just less excited to see John Leonard play..

Not mad at this, but without Eklund this team is simply not as good imo. Let him develop in Sweden and come into training camp next year with a whole bunch of confidence. Who takes his place? Edit: nevermind, just saw that its Leonard. Unless Leonard hits a gear none of us have seen in terms of his development, I don't see him being a long term answer.

Your captain wanted him there, you keep him. It sucks that it seems like the decision between being here the entire year or not was made because Balcers can’t bury a puck for shit and Dahlen didn’t tap in that bang-bang play from Eklund on the power play last night to tie it.

If Eklund buried a goal or two, he may have made a better case. It's not simply someone else not burying chances.

One of the biggest Swedish newspapers ("Expressen") having this as a headline in the sports section.

This is a bit (much) exaggerated *LoL*, well, since Eklund is considered one of our best talents I guess our hockey journalists are surprised.

"William Eklund is forced back home: "Heartbroken"
The Swede dissappointed - can't continue in the NHL
