I don’t understand why they wouldn’t sign him considering we have signed others from the SHL with a similar pedigree and he’s already in our system.

The management staff lost the post-it note that has the Sharks reserve list on it, so they forgot he exists.

But like why?
Other than Oberg not wanting to sign (and he's a 7th round draft pick, beggers can't be choosers) or the scouting staff viewing him negatively (possible), the only thing I can think of is "too many right-handers" (not a problem).

The Sharks should have plenty of room on the Barracuda next year and plenty of contract slots. I pencilled in a quick team and we could bury guys like Hamaliuk and Ibragimov and fit Oberg in. Maybe he really does suck and we loan him back to Europe, but whatever, that's fine - might as well see what the young scoring winger from Sweden can do in the US rather than allow his rights to lapse.

My guess is the GM team either dropped the ball or the scouting staff doesn't like Oberg.

Pretty sure Oberg is not eligible to play in the AHL next season due to the new SHL-NHL transfer agreement.

Is there a tldr on the new agreement?
Basically the relevant section is if a Swedish player is under 24 and was drafted outside the first round he can only play in the SHL or NHL. Under the previous agreement the age cutoff was 21 so Oberg would have been eligible to play for the Barracuda next season.

Disappointing but not that big of a deal.
This is probably the correct response. I was kind of bummed out about it because you don't want to just let an asset go for free, but odds are quite high that he would end up, at best, as a 3rd or 4th liner, and if the Sharks have anything at this stage, it's a lot of guys who look like current or future bottom six guys.

There is a question of asset management, in terms of who make up the 50, and I think this is where they could improve, ala the way the Giants use their 40 man roster now compared to before the current regime came in, but that's another story and hopefully something that the incoming general manager will sort out a little better.

Apparently hes staying in sweden next year which the sharks werent interested in. Strange move when you draft him as a double overager and then bail a couple years later after he starts to excel

Watching the elite offensive talent in these playoffs makes me think Oberg would not make a difference anyway 😭

He showed a lot of promise and it sucks but whatever. The Barracuda will have a lot of forwards next year, so even if they signed him who knows how that would affect his/others opportunity.
