Would make the Burns trade look better too. Grier has cleaned up DWJr's embarrassing mess of a 2020 draft by bringing in Askarov, Mukhamadullin and Thompson.

Not getting ANYTHING out of the 2020 draft after finishing 29th out of 31 teams was a catastrophic failure that prolonged the rebuild. Sharks fans shouldn't let that go.
Askarov, Shak and Thompson aren't guaranteed NHLers yet but at least we're not pinning our hopes on Wiesblatt and Bordeleau anymore.
Why? Can we change it? It’s over, the team has moved forward. You should too.

Yes, if the regime was the same. But it's not.
There is no point harping on the selections and decisions of the DW era at this point. It's more impressive what Grier has done what he's done in restocking the pool. It can also be said that, thanks to DW hampering the franchise; we now have our 1C and continue to get elite young players.
This is going to be a really silly looking post when Timofei Spitserov wins the Conn Smythe Trophy for us...

To be fair, the difference between a great, successful, and poor draft is tiny...two NHLers makes the gap.

1. 2020 draft was a very weak one in general. Look at all the picks from #31 onward.
There are only 4 players with 30 or more NHL points picked #31 or higher. 4. Its just a weak year in general.
2. The sharks are getting very close to respectability. Next summer, we should be able to to finally have a roster worthy of a PO run. Celly and smith will continue to develop. I think Thompson is a solid NHler to be. Cags may be ready for NHL time. Mukh remains TBD but we'll see. Dick might be ready, though I doubt it. Gush and Cards should get serious looks this year. Pohlcamp may make a training camp run. He'll be 21 years old and ready to make a the pro leap.
There are a lot of possibilities and TONS of cap space.
Grier will need to have a great UFA summer though. We will need to be highly active in signing at least 2 top 4 D and 2 more top 6 F. Grier has done a great job in trade, but aside from Toffoli, he has not done particularly well adding via UFA. One can argue thats because he didnt really want to as they were not ready to compete, but it seems to me like they are only a few players from being ready:
Celebrini- Toffoli - Eklund
Zetterlund- granlund (trade at deadline, then resign in summer)-TOP 6 UFA Winger
Smith- Wennberg- TOP 6 UFA winger
Goodrow-Grundstrom-Dyllandrea
then have competition among Cardwell, Gushkin, Bystedt, Graf, haltunnen, Musty, etc for the other two roster spots, injury fill ins, or healthy scratch of Good/Grund/or Dyl.
Walman-UFA Top 4 D
Thompson- UFA top 4 D
Ferraro-Liljgren
Dick, Cagnoni, Pohlcamp, Mukh fight for the #7/8 spot.
Note: thrun is out. I think he has had aenough time to show his NHL skill and it aint there.

Wonder if Musty could go the NCAA route. Probably too late for that since the AHL path will now open to him.
Musty has already signed his ELC, so he could never play in the NCAA.

The agreement is definitely too late and Musty is a prime example of why the agreement is needed for players. Ah well.

I keep seeing discussions and articles that act like this is some landscape-shifting change to the amateur sports market, but feel like the impact of this is being overstated. Guys who pick one league or the other are highly unlikely to go back and forth without significant reason to (like a Musty situation or like an NCAA player who somehow voided their NCAA eligibility and goes to the CHL as an alternative) and that unless/until there's a massive restructuring of the Major Jr/Jr A/Jr B system this won't turn the CHL into any sort of pipeline for NCAA players where guys come in and play their 16 and 17 YO seasons in the CHL then bail for the NCAA. It will still likely be easier and just as good for players to play a year or two (or sometimes three) in the USHL or BCHL or wherever and then go to college than it would for them to go to a CHL program that would likely be put off by the fact that they'd only get maybe a year of significan value out of a player before they're gone (because 16 year olds in the CHL are rarely high end play drivers unless they're elite talents.)
Seems instead like the idea might be for it to open the door for good CHLers without much high level pro future who might decide to go an American school instead of being restricted to a Canadian one by the CHL scholarship program. Maybe the scholarship program switches to allow the money to be applied to NCAA schools (though it would not be a year-by-year full ride the way it is now as I think NCAA schools are generally more expensive than all but the priciest or most prestigious USports schools and I doubt the CHL has the money to foot the bill for NCAA scholarships on the regular unless the NCAA kicks in some money to cover it)
The biggest change is for the non Pro prospects. The 20 year old players from the CHL are now available to the NCAA teams. Before they were pulling most of their non pro prospects from 20 year old USHL teams.
If the NCAA does not expand this could take some college hockey spots away from non prospect US skaters. My hope is that with the increase in players available to the NCAA the number of teams expanding as well.

I watched most of this game, Sam was pretty good.
I'm often struck by the fact that a lot of Easton Cowan's points come from junior-style breakaways. I'm not shocked he underwhelmed at Leafs camp and I doubt he's ever anything more than a good third liner despite his big scoring numbers.

My side note observation is that Brzustewicz always stands out in a bad way when watching LDN clips... I know this because I keep being like "oh god I hope that wasn't Dickinson making the play" because a tucked-in 2 looks enough like a 3 in poor video quality and before I've checked L/R. But yeah, #2 keeps standing out as playing not great. Behind the play, bad reads, sloppy with the puck. Granted I'm not watching full games... so maybe just small sample size problem.
