His puck protection is insane. The game just comes so easy to him right now at this level that he feels ahead of almost every play. The last few games have been so much fun to watch.

Really, really starting to get excited about him. If we're not counting Askarov, Smith, Celebrini I think he might be the Shark's best prospect right now. Dickinson is more important, but he might just have the higher ceiling. Lots of caveats here, and the sample size is small, but he just gets it.

Based on Chernyshov playstyle, I would say long term he fits with Smith on that 2nd line if he develops to his absolute potential or even close to it.
Then again without going to far ahead, the path probably is 1st line AHL -> 3rd line with veteran C -> 1st line with Celebrini -> 2nd line with Smith. I can see him helping Smith with his size and two way game a ton.

Cherny is freakin' feasting right now, can't wait to see if can AHL the same way.
He'll probably need a year in AHL, but I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a shortcut to NHL.

I'm low-key thinking Chernyshov is a better prospect than Dickinson, purely based on this small sample size. I can't do it because it's nine games, but that's where my head is at. He's so, so fun and so, so good.

The vibes of Chernyshov to Misa is very 2011 Clowe to Couture but on crack and against children, no?

It might just be because he's playing with a shooter in Misa, and this isn't to take away from Chernyshov's whip-like wrister, but I feel like he's more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. Seems silly to say about a dude with 12 goals in nine games, but that's where we are.

It might just be because he's playing with a shooter in Misa, and this isn't to take away from Chernyshov's whip-like wrister, but I feel like he's more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. Seems silly to say about a dude with 12 goals in nine games, but that's where we are.

My biggest worry about rebuilds is cool SJ has all this draft capital and making picks is fun. But they really need to hit on some real talent outside of 1OV and 4OV to really turn it around. Your words on Chernyshov give me so much hope haha

I usually do have a positive slant on Sharks prospects, but I definitely don't glaze them for no reason. I've called out guys like Smith, Musty, Dickinson, Halttunen, etc. for play that I didn't like or stretches of suboptimal play.

With that said, I don't feel like I'm being hyperbolic about how good Chernyshov has been. Doesn't mean that it will 100% translate, obviously, but when you have a kid who is proven to be capable against men in one of the best hockey leagues in the world who then comes to the CHL fresh off a major surgery and puts up literally a point a period while playing good defense and having the physical traits that he does... how can you not rave about him? As you said, we need guys who weren't slam dunks like Celebrini to not just pan out but exceed expectations in order for this rebuild to succeed. I have a lot of hope for Chernyshov being one of those guys.

I still think it's shocking that a playoff team with a pick didn't take him in the 20's. I was sure Edmonton was going to take him instead of Sam O'Reilly.

Chernyshov is putting insane rates as a 19-year-old. Think about Kevin Labanc, a mid-6 forward with flags in his game; Chernyshov is putting up far better numbers and doesn't have those flags.

I'm also prone to thinking "this guy was a 2nd-round pick just last year, we must be missing some issue", but there's credible evidence that this was just oversight from a bunch of GMs (and the Sharks's fortune).

Also a guy who fundamentally understood how to break down OHL defenses and cut through them like butter.

Difference is one is 6'3" and one is 5'11", and one knows where his own net is and how to skate there.

Unlike Labanc, Chernyshov has the tools and all-around game to make it as a 3rd line energy guy if the offense doesn't translate.

In some ways, Chernyshov makes Musty a lot more tradeable, though frankly wouldn’t it be swell if both worked out?

I really like his assist highlights because they’re often very sort of surgical, smart, quick tape to tape passes that translate into easy goals. It’s hard not to get really excited about this kid. Thank god again for that hot hot sun.

It does but both working out would be more beneficial

A sunburn was the best thing to happen as far as Chernyshov was concerned XD

That oversight is a silly bias. That’s why he wasn’t taking sooner. Look at Artamonov.

I think most of it was the question of how long he’d be in Russia. Otherwise he goes late teens/early 20s.

The 33rd pick is really nice because you get the first shot on day to grab potential gems.
