Article is pretty much spot on. The Sharks are paying so much for little on defense, and with Karlsson 30, Burns 36 and Vlasic 34 there really is no upside here. Imagine having that 25 million free to invest in other areas? Instead DW or whoever the next GM will be after him are hamstrung until 2025 at the earliest.

SHN had a good recap of DW's end of season presser/Q&A. (Before all the exit interviews with players and coaches.)

In a nutshell.... Team didn't think they'd make much noise in the post season so didn't "go for it", giving up prospects and high picks, to make acquisitions at TDL.

Plan to work on goal tending, 3C.

Sounds reasonable.

Now to see how things pan out this off season.

(I do not expect Jones to be on the roster next season.)

Finish 25th in the league; management thinks we're a 3rd line center away from competing.

f***, we're in Cleveland Browns pre-2018 levels of screwed.

Relax @Coily

Sharks retained a bunch of assets they didn't use to acquire guys so to build up prospect pool for future acquisitions.

Sharks aren't among the teams thought to be serious contender to acquire Eichel as they apparently don't have the assets, say compared to LAK.

But DW knows how to wheel and deal.

All they acquired in the 14-15 offseason was award and Martin and they went to the finals. It sometimes doesn’t take a lot for a bad team to become a good one (and vice versa)

......That said, I don’t see this team doing that anytime soon.

That 2015 team still had a majority of the core that was a perennial playoff team with some of the top players in their primes. Martin and Ward replaced depth pieces like Hannan and Tyler Kennedy, and the team's cap structure was very very good. There's a pretty huge difference.

Which is what I implicated at the bottom.

My point was sometimes a team’s chemistry can improve vastly with few improvements.

Fair enough.

Yea, that's true. Losing Pavelski was probably a huge part of why this team lost its mojo but at the time it was a worthwhile gamble to sign a (potentially) better player. This team has guys who can be leaders but for whatever reason the room just isn't gelling. I think having such a terrible year before and continuing to get such awful goaltending night after night has kinda sucked the life out of this roster; it's tough to feel confident when you know that whatever goals you scored are probably just gonna come right back against you, with interest.

Don’t forget Martin Jones, who at the time was much better than Niemi. You shouldn’t underestimate the impact of Burns settling back in at D (his 14-15 was up and down after playing forward the full season before that) and Hertl was finally healthy as well, and he really clicked with Thornton and Pavelski. Speaking of Thornton, he unexpectedly had a Hart-caliber season in 2015-2016 at age 37 (legitimate the only center better that year was Crosby). A lot of things changed between 2014-2015 and 2015-2016, not just signing Martin and Ward.

I have no issues letting Pave walk to sign Karlsson. Sharks would have been rightfully ridiculed if they didn’t. We just have the benefit of hindsight and perspective to show us just how valuable Pavelski was on and off the ice here.

I thought he was acquired the offseason before for some reason. An oversight on my part.

I have no problems with letting Pavs go to sign Karlsson but they could've signed them both if they planned properly.

Oh sure, that's kinda my point. Pavs was about to turn 35 and it was similar to the Marleau situation where we all knew he'd start his decline sooner than later. Karlsson wasn't even 30 yet, the year he was here he had the best stretch of hockey as a Shark since prime Jumbo, and he was a huge part of a team that was two wins away from a second Final.

In the end I’m glad Pavelski got paid and is in a better situation. He deserves it.

That’s very true. It’s very important to make the right decisions with core members and contracts because you can lose a Pavelski and be stuck with a Vlasic and Jones.

Didn't they integrate like 10 new guys that year? I remember that being a common refrain at the end of that season. Donskoi was huge for the top 9 depth too

There was Jones, Ward, Martin, and Donskoi in terms of guys that started the 15-16 season that weren't there for 14-15. It was also Tierney's first full season as he played about half the year the previous year. Dillon's first full season with teal as well though he played 60 the year before but it was an early season trade. It was DeMelo's first year of NHL action. They had also brought in Zubrus then of course the trades for Reimer, Polak, and Spaling. They did a lot of turnover there but most of it was secondary and tertiary level. I don't think our team currently has the top end players that that team had to build around but I also don't think it's impossible to turn it around with a lot of what the team has. It will take some things going right though.

Bingo. Few things kill team moral like a goalie who can't do his job at even an average level. Couture playing hurt for 20+ games didn't help either.
