Rust has always been a decent playmaker, his scoring would go cold at times, but he was always good at dishing the puck off quickly to find someone trailing or some nifty pass to keep the play moving along.
he was an okay playmaker before when he picked his head up. But this stat kind of tells the story
Rust now has 17 assists in 26 games on the season.

He had 17 assists all of last season.

So NYR and CAR with two pro scouts at the game tonight...all I can say is that if they’re potentially scouting any of our players for a potential trade, they’ll walk away saying no thanks...

As a manager, when you're forced to choose between setting up your A player to succeed or your C player to succeed, you chose your A player, and you don't wait to do it when it becomes clear that a choice is necessary.

Again, it is one hockey game. It is the first one this trio has started together in the NHL ever.
And it is now a 2-2 game. Against a team that we think we should be able to beat even as shorthanded as we are.

Suppose I just have a good deal more patience than you on this one :).
I'd do it again against Montreal even if it doesn't pan out tonight.

Geno owes a huge 3rd. He hasn’t been good.

I know Marino's had a rough one but i'd love to know out of Sully/Recchi which one put Simon on the ice on a 4on4. HE'S NOT THIS 2-WAY MONSTER YOU THINK HE IS!!!!...to whoever sent him.

With this game how it is going and the several rounds that plopped down right in front of Dell, you just have to get Horny out there because he is always setup in front of the goalie mouth.

Gotta make that happen.

It’s a mistake to keep that line together. We don’t need to see anything else. There is 0 chance Galchenyuk is going to catch fire. He tried, now he needs to just make the call.

Only way it's going to be passable is if Geno is in god mode, and counting on that as a coaching strategy seems shortsighted. If he's not, it will look like a cluster because Galchenyuk doesn't help drive play and instead just reacts. Phil reacted because he was lazy a lot of the time. Chucky, as all correctly note, tries, but he's just low IQ as @Scandale du Jour keeps noting. You can't have that and expect Geno to drive play more regularly. I mean, there are game with Jake or McCann or even Simon where Geno isn't god mode or looks off, and he's still driving play because the unit is attacking. I just hope Sully recognizes it sooner than later and without lasting effect.

EDIT: I'm not sure he'll be proactive. It may take the Pens being blown out. BUT, let's be honest. Geno's 5 on 5 game and production with any LW not named Galckenyuk is light years ahead of what it's been with Galchenyuk. No point to arguing WHY. As a coach, you make the change.

Simon is terrible. It's comical to see him consistently being used in all situations like he's this amazing all around player, the guy is just so bland defensively and his vision...dude has the worst tunnel vision on the team. He's just this spastic guy on the ice.

We shouldn’t be surprised if we win but this has been a big grind of a battle all game for us.

Yet it’s 2-2 going into the 3rd.

You can see the Pens are playing hard and getting shots. But without some key finishers ala Sid and Jake, Pens have to work a little harder and get some ugly goals. Oh well, GMJR will make a move at some point. Not sure the TDL will work.

What does the 2-2 score have to do with anything. This is as bad as Malkin (and Malkin-Rust) has looked all year. It's not about Galchenyuk deserving a chance. It's about leveraging Malkin. And, unfortunately, it's been clear for a while that one of those things has to give.
