Sharks at IIHF Worlds 2025

Gotta say Mack already passed Bedard in hockey lessons by going to this tournament. This is such a big jump for Mack playing along with Crosby and MacKinnon AND succeeding. This was such a great way to show his country that he is ready to take the crown from Crosby once he retires one day. We got the king!
I think he is solidifying his spot on the Olympic roster.

If Grier can get Mack some help around him, I think he’s going to have a phenomenal sophomore season. Shining on the international stage and wowing Crosby and Mackinnon — he’s showing himself to be everything people expected Bedard to be. What a player.
Just goes to show that record points scorers from the WHL/OHL might not translate to the NHL as well as players who excel in the NCAA at a young age *kicks multiple hornet's nests at once, runs for hills*

Who's the last legit NHL star to emerge from the CHL? McDavid ten years ago? All the best defensemen are from the NCAA or Europe for sure.

Careful, might trawl a whole lot of Sharks potential 2025-26 prospects in that dragnet... Misa, Martone, Desnoyers, McKenna, Roobroeck, Verhoeff...

In "seriousness", depends on your definition of Star.

2017 Hischier QMJHL, Jason Robertson OHL
2018 Svechnikov OHL, Bouchard OHL, Dobson Q
2019 Cozens WHL, Harley OHL, Suzuki OHL
2020 getting into "too soon to say" territory but Byfield OHL, Jarvis WHL feels like a stretch
2021 McTavish OHL, Wyatt Johnson OHL, Stankoven WHL, obviously Ostapchuk WHL
2022 way too soon to say but...
Wright, Korchinski, Mintyukov

Yuck. What an embarrassing list for the CHL.

Certainly not exciting at the very top of the draft, but some of those picks are looking pretty awesome (Harley, Johnston, Svechnikov) ... Dobson and Bouchard are about the best you can expect (not the best possible outcome). Lots of Misa parallels to Wright so hope he can pull it together.

I personally don't think Frondell or Hagens are a good get at 2. It's truly a rough year. Simon from TSLH thinks only Misa has first line potential of the forwards but more as a wing like Taylor Hall - not inspiring as a core piece. Schaefer or bust.

We don't need Misa to be a 1st liner. If he slots in as a strong 2C and Smith is moved to the wing (where his slipperiness and scoring-focused game might work better than at center) that works out just fine too.

I agree that makes the most sense, but we of course would rather that Misa is first line caliber, just happens to be on our second line. That's the contending core we need.

I mean, I'd rather he be the second coming of Crosby

Well, if he’s a top line winger maybe having him on a line with Smith and, say, Chernyshov, maximizes his potential and helps with mismatches.

And he may hit his ceiling yet, who knows.

Dedraft:
2016: Mathews (Europe), Tkachuk (OHL), Fox (NDP), Brat (Europe), Keller (NDP), Sergachev (OHL)
2017: Makar (AJHL/College), Heiskanen (Europe), Hischier (Q), Thomas (OHL), Suzuki (OHL)
2018: Hughes (College), Dahlin (Europe), Brady (College), Bouchard (OHL), Dobson (OHL)
2019: Seider (Europe), Hughes (College), Harley (OHL), Boldy (NDP), Caufield (NDP)
2020: Stuzle (Europe), Sanderson (College), Raymond (Europe), Jarvis (WHL), Byfeld (OHL), Lafreniere (Q)

Way to earlier redraft
2021: Johnston (OHL), Hughes (College), Beniers (College), McTavish (OHL), Johnson (College), Guenther (WHL), Edvinsson (Europe)
2022: Cooley (College), Hutson (College), Slaf (Europe), Wright (OHL)
2023: Bedard (WHL), Carlsson (Europe), Fantilli (College), Michkov (Europe), Smith (College)

Some of the best players continue to come out of the CHL, but it's not the undisputed leader. I'd argue this reflects the broader global reach, and the fact that many of the best Canadians are opting for college hockey (Celebrini, Fantilli, Makar). Can't deny the OHL no longer has the relative strength it once did. If Misa is the next Hischier/Tkachuk/Thomas/Suzuki I'd be thrilled. Same for Dickinson and Bouchard/Dobson/Harley.

Take a look at the current playoff points leaders. There are 29 players with 10 or more points (25th plus ties)

16/29 are products of the CHL 55%
Only 8 have been drafted after McDavid, 5 of those 8 are from the CHL.

Also, using McDavid as the cutoff is odd since the majority of the current superstars of the NHL were drafted in 14, 15 and 16.

Using those years you have
McDavid
Draisaitl
Marner
M Tkachuk
As clear cut superstars drafted out of the CHL

Plenty of NHL superstars have emerged since McDavid (Matthews, Makar, Dahlin, Quinn and Jack Hughes) just not from the CHL. Meanwhile we've had highly touted prospects who have put up crazy CHL stats like Lafreniere, Rossi and Bedard fail to do anything of note in the NHL. Also Draisaitl and Tkachuk were drafted out of the CHL but didn't develop there.

Bedard's rookie and sophomore numbers are better than what J Hughes put up so seems odd to write him off already

Rossi? He wasn't even the first player drafted from his CHL team.

Bedard was touted as a generational talent. It is absolutely not too early to write off the possibility of that happening.

Rossi had a higher draft year points per game rate than Misa who some are talking about like a can't-miss prospect largely on the basis of his production. All I'm saying is we should stop acting like the CHL is the same quality of league that it was when they were regularly churning out guys like Crosby, Weber, Stamkos, Tavares, MacKinnon, McDavid, Marner, etc. on an annual basis.

if my boss asks, I have no idea, but celebrini is looking very good on the defensive side in this game, crazy forechecking, etc. He looks a bit odd on the wing and doesn't quite know how to play the boards on the breakout from W.
