Confirmed with Link: Sharks acquire Vincent Desharnais for 2028 5th

This trade is another Blah. I get the size desire. Thats what both this one and giles are all about. adding size.

However, rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic is just that. Ruuta into Desharnais. Blah.

The sharks need to add TALENT to go with size. So far, nothing.
That's not what the trade deadline is going to be about unless something unexpected occurs. For the Sharks, it's just going to be about getting something for expiring contracts.

I can understand this as obviously getting real talent for the remainder of this year comes with Zero value (so the value of the remainder of the year simply increases the purchase price for any longer term players).

All that said, I guess I hold out hope for a top 4 D?

I suppose the more realistic eventuality would have that trade happen over the summer either around draft day or UFA time.

What can I say, I want to see the future begin to take shape instead of more jettisoning more of the past for free along with adding more filler like desharnais (like Ceci was, etc). So far, the sharks have basically done nothing. Perhaps that's to be expected, but I guess I am hoping for a bit of a blockbuster that adds a real piece (top 6F or top 4D) for the next year and beyond.

I can dream...

This is a short sighted view on what GMMG is doing.

Rutta is definitely gone due to injury or UFA. Desharnais is a stop gap measure for a year that is controlled and ideally can be flipped for an asset but who knows. The 5th is more than I would have expected though.

He is doing the same thing he did with VV which is find someone with short term. Pretty obvious we don't get the pick of the litter in UFA right now.

i see little reason to add #6/7Dmen? if we are going to compete next year, then he will not even play. if we arent, then better to have the kids take the spot. Give more ice to thompson, Mukh, Cagnoni/Pohlcamp/Dick...

We don't need more depth guys. We have an army of 4th liners and bottom pair D. Adding more of them is just a waste of a roster spot. If we are gunna take 2M in salary on, id rather add a few more mil and get a real player, or add a few mil and take a real cap dump to receive a pick. I see little reason to add guys like this?

Whats short sighted? He is adding a depth body who is big. thats the purpose. But, roster spots are limited so the more guys signed to $2M deals who take up a roster spot, the fewer there are for kids or legit actual impact players.

Maybe he is insurance for a ferraro trade in case they cant sign/trade for a D this summer? A warm body in case we have to tank again next year?

I need to see Grier start adding real players to build a real team. No more fillers.

We're more likely to lose a top 4 D at this deadline than to get one. Our time is going to be the draft and free agent day. Once you put on the game tonight, you'll see more of the future begin to take shape. Shakir Mukhamadullin is a recent add showing to be a strong future talent for us to go with Eklund, Celebrini, Smith, and Graf. You can dream. You'll just have to wait.

You're going to need to wait until the summer at the earliest.

Honestly, you might need to wait until summer 2026.

It is hard for SJS to get the type of players we want in free agency. I think GMMG sees trades like this as a guarantee that we'll have an acceptable NHL caliber RD (from Mgmt's perspective). Who on the Cuda is a better player than VD?

It isn't exactly a great UFA crop either but there are a few exceptions.
