IMO it’s a pretty solid pickup. Shout out to @Hodge for supplying evidence that he’s not some lumbering DFD who can’t skate.

He’s honestly a perfect partner for any one of Dickinson, Schaefer, or Cagnoni on the 3rd pair.

Here's an AI rendering of him and Cagnoni as a 3rd pair.

Well, that’s nice I guess. I do think that they want someone giant to help clear creases, etc. and obviously a replacement for someone we’re shortly going to trade.

I like a Cagnoni - Desharnais pairing — Desharnais can throw the puck and Cagnoni out of the zone at the same time.

They can either run
Walman - Liljegren
Ferraro - Mukamadulin
Vlasic - Desharnais

Or
Walman - Liljegren
Ferraro - Desharnais
Mukamadulin - Thompson

I would prefer the first option.

I'm alright with this deal. Less of a chance someone has to play on their off side. If we see Cagnoni-Desharnais on the 3rd pair at any point in the next season and change, it'll have been worth the shot.

Weirdly want to see Muk-Desharnais and see the ice shrink in half with two behemoths on the back end.

Cannot be worse than playing Kyle Burroughs last season, Matt Benning this season, etc. Plus he can PK and hit some folk. Let's hope he's not the best addition on the D this offseason.
Problem is at a certain point Grier can’t only be bringing in players that “can’t be worse than Burroughs and Benning”. He’s just shipping out junk and bringing in other junk.

A 2028 5th? A complete non factor. Might as well be future considerations.
2028 is so far away there's a slight chance one or both front offices completely forget about it by then...

Nobody catches it until the sharks have already made the pick, some nhl intern finds out it was invalid and hilarity ensues in a random dispute for an undersized winger who can't defend and hid a wrist injury from their coaching staff in a game against Iceland drafted 139th

To be clear, Desharnais is an upgrade on Thompson and a fine bottom pairing defensemen, I just think we have enough bottom pairing defensemen. If Grier flips Thrun, then I'll change my tune.

We need one who is right handed and leans defensive, especially for next year and after the trade deadline since it’s fairly likely we trade one of Ferraro/Walman.

Desharnais could be a perfect partner for Dickinson on the third pair next season. I'm sure that's a big reason for the trade.

He's also a late bloomer who's only in his second full NHL season at 28yo. Maybe there's a future #4/#5 guy here. Probably not, but this is the kind of project the Sharks should be taking on.

To that, I say, then why do teams keep getting rid of him as soon as they can? A huge defensive RHD should be a valuable commodity, but he's been passed around for nothing multiples times in the last 8 months.
