It's the Celebrini effect. Guys looking to boost their value will want to play here now. Maybe he can convince Marner to sign with us on a short term deal?
Marner is going to chase a huge payday, I'm not interested in paying him like he's an elite talent, he would be our version of the Tavares team-building mistake that Toronto made

If we chase a big name UFA it has to be a defenseman, we're doing well building forward depth though the draft and marginal free agent/trade additions, I wouldn't spend big dollars on a UFA winger

Marner going for short term deal? The dude is only interested in cashing the biggest cheque he can get. He is for sure looking for an 8 year 12+ million deal from Toronto, and if they don't give it to him I bet he wants to get traded so he can sign the 8 year max with that team. We should have zero interest in Marner in my opinion.

It's the only thing of any value we sent back. I have no problem with a 3rd - they don't often become top 4 Dmen.
I think a 3rd is a fair price for a 3rd pair Dman.

It was a good deal for the Sharks.

Without the 3rd it would have been a robbery.

"We'll give you a 3rd and a 6th for Lijegren"

"Deal"

"We'll give you a 3rd, a 6th and Benning for Liljegren"

"....deal"
It didn't go that way. Otherwise it would have been: "We'll give you a 3rd, a 6th, Benning, and Rutta for Liljegren.

Interestingly, the Leafs paid Liljegren a $2.4 million bonus on July 1 so the Sharks really only owe him about $850k for the rest of this season then $2.6 million next year. Just about $1 million more than what Benning is owed on his contract. Toronto probably expected to trade him all along.

I can't dig up the link but yea Pierre Lebrun said as much

They almost didn't qualify him and decided to give him a two year for less than they thought he would get in a 1 year. They front loaded the contract to make him as tradable as possible. They were hoping to get something for him but there wasn't much interest.
