These quotes make it sound like the team knew, didn't leak anything about the investigation despite being absolutely clobbered by the fanbase and media about the "holdout".

While it is still a huge mess it certainly should take a little of the vitriol out of the Dorion criticism. The fact that the org didn't even hint at something else that might have been causing issues with the signing deserves credit.

Now get him signed so the 41 games can start ticking off.

Man I bet this guy thought we were going to start off red hot last year so he placed some of what he thought were easy bets. Then we sucked ass and he started to panic and had to make the money back

Isn't betting on non-NHL sports/events allowed? That's how it works in the NFL.

Why would they give a shit if he's playing in a fantasy league or throwing money on college football? Is that actually the rule?

To the point that our own owner didn’t know? And purposely mislead the fan base ? I doubt that. Maybe Dorion didn’t tell him? Which would be amazing
Maybe the team didn't want to throw Pinto under the bus until the investigation was complete?

They've done exactly the same with Formenton. The team has said absolutely nothing linking him to the Hockey Canada investigations.

The obvious difference is that me placing a bet sitting on my couch can't influence the outcome of a game, whereas a player can.

Pinto can influence the outcome of a Bears-Packers game?

Apparently, Pinto wasn't betting on NHL games.

It'd be a huge problem if he was betting on games in which he played, that is true. But that's not close to what has happened here, from what we know. If he did bet on his own games, he'd be banned for life, like Pete Rose.

They don't have the cap space. They'd have to send JBD down, but can't because Zub is hurt.

But off ice suspensions don't count against the cap.

So they could sign him and when the suspension is over they could replace Chartier or whoever with him.

Honestly f***ing ridiculous. Why in the world can't a pro hockey player bet football?

League found out some point this summer, Dorion likely the same time.

A recent hearing put a pause on all negotiations
Dorion probably knew first and ratted him out... :sarcasm:

Really though, the only way this gets out is if someone close to him was the source.

SPORTSNET.ca’s Elliotte Friedman notes the Senators are the first NHL team “to put a gambling company … on their helmet ads” as part of a “seven-figure deal.” Friedman: “Now that the NHL opened this door, the Senators won’t be the last”
