The thread for our 20th pick has more post in it than the thread for our #7 overall. I find that interesting...not in a good way.

The unknown will always spark more questions and conversation, we pretty much know what we're getting in Holtz while on the other hand we're trying to get a clue on what we got in Shakir.

The more I hear about this kid the more I think "Eric Gelinas" comparison. Anyone else think that's fair? Eric was never able to round out his game and stick in the NHL but he had an NHL shot, he was big, and he was a forward converted to D. Obviously we are hoping Shakir can develop and make this pick look like a great decision. It'll be a project but I like what he's doing in the K.

I dont think it is a good comparison. Mukha is more of a hard worker and I actually trust him to defend

You mean this Gelinas in the KHL? As a 27 year old? Sure he may end up that type of player but his potential is much higher than Gelinas.

I don't think it's a good comparison. Gelinas was bad defensively, while Mukhamadullin is praised for his defensive abilities and ability to play in all situations. The only comparison there would be that they both are prone to running around a bit. Gelinas never learned how to play positional/zonal defense, and I'm more confident Mukhamadullin has that capability.

This video has interviews with all 4 Russian 1st round picks, including Shakir. Luckily, there is a translator for Shakir's interview. I speak Russian so I can tell you the translator didnt do a great job translating...but you will get the jist.

I already saw that interview and it didn't help that the translator was also a bit hard-of-hearing, too. lol.

I mean this surprises you? GDT's from frustrating losses always get more play than GDT's of 5-1 wins. Contreversy sparks discussion and whatever you think of this guy he was a contreversial pick.

definitely fair

the worry with Russian kids is always will they come over?

That's certainly a part of it too...Rykov who everyone loved is now back in Russia.

I'm thrilled with Mercer but Holtz should never in a million years go before talents like Rossi and Perfetti. It's heartbreaking to miss out on guys with elite upside like that for a guy that will be Kyle Palmieri if we're lucky.
I mean... hes 18 and the kid has a much better shot and hands than Palms. that is a poor comparison

Gelinas was not playing in a men's league at 18, at least I don't think he was. We drafted him out of the Q

Rykov didn't think it through, or maybe his agent didn't. What is the best landing spot for a non-top prospect? Answer: anywhere you can make the team and have a good opportunity to play. NJ offered that for Rykov. Maybe Rykov thought he was better than he turned out to be, but his agent really missed the boat here. NYR have multiple prospects ahead of Rykov and he didn't have an opportunity to round out his game and didn't have an opportunity to really settle in. I also think Rykov is a bit of a front runner and expected to be handed an NHL spot. If I am correct about that, NJ didn't miss out on much by trading him. Maybe he returns and maybe he's good but at this point it's tough to see a team guarantee him an NHL roster spot since he's played in the AHL and by multiple accounts I've read was good but not great.

I wonder if Rasmus Ristolainen or Vlad Malakhov are decent upside comparables?
Idk about Ristolainen, as I think Shakir is a bit better defensively, but who am I to say that, I literally am awful at player comparables. If I had to say a player, I'd go with Aaron Ekblad.

That's fair, I know I felt once we passed on Schneider at 18 we didn't really want him (or conversely any defenseman left) cause he was the last of the second-tier guys. And the fact we have a few more games this season to take into account makes this different from other drafts, it clearly goosed this kid's stock somewhat.

Maybe if Fitz wasn't a rookie GM who's already shown an inclination toward a dangerously old-school mindset I'd be a little calmer about this pick, but he's already put himself on the clock here so he'd better be right. And most #20 picks don't work out even when they aren't big gambles.
If you don't mind me asking, what is the "inclination toward a dangerously old-school mindset" you are referring too?
