Shakir has been playing very well to begin the season in the KHL. His team is among the tops of the league and he leads the team in ice time.

Just scored his first goal today.
Is that true? Might be the stat of the day.

When can we expect him to come over

Looks like he's 4th among defensemen for average TOI, didn't look at forwards since the site isn't very mobile friendly and I didn't want to go through them all.

Still think he's been good this year from everything I've seen/read though. I think Fitzy said Muk will be in NA next season.

Ya, leading the team as a 19 year old sounded a little amibtious.

4th is still OK though, and him coming over next year sounds like the proper progression.

he’s led the team in ice time for a particular game, not sure how many times that’s happened or if it was the result of an injury or something else. Regardless, being a regular at 19 on a strong KHL team is something.

If this guy turns out to be a true top pairing NHL defenseman, holy smokes.

Shakir Mukhamadullin, Luke Hughes, Ty Smith, Dougie Hamilton, Damon Severson, Ryan Graves.

Wow.
Extremely unlikely IMO. That’s an unrealistic expectation or hope although it’s not impossible. I think he’s a guy who has a solid chance at being a decent second pairing defensemen.

It’s always safest to stick to a conservative forecast. For now I will offer that he’s improving and doing so in a good men’s league. If he continues to improve maybe he can serve as mire than a decent second pair guy. To me it will hinge on whether he can fill out his frame and get strong enough to control the front of the net. That and he will have to speed up his puck handling a bit. If he does those things he could be a pretty good all situations defender in four or five years. He’s still WJC eligible this season which highlights his youth. Nothing is certain and he has flaws in his game but at least he’s working on it and hasn’t plateaued.

At the time of that tweet he was leading the team in ice time
That was less then a week ago. Not trying to be argumentative but going from 1st to 4th in a week sounds unlikely.

As HSF says above perhaps it was that particular game.

I read somewhere as well that after the fourth game , he was the leading icetime Dman for the next 3-4 games. Maybe at the start of the year he was not getting icetime like a first pairing D but since then has he not ?
Whatever . He was getting huge icetime and was a first pair guy and used on the PP and PK . That alone is damn good for a 19 year old.

Yes I know he meant Bahl but also forgot Okhotiuk. Still. We have a very nice looking group of D coming up . I am nkt gettig my hopes up too much as I still vividly remember the hype about Gelinas Urbom Eckford Fayne Merrill …..

these guys feel different though. The group you mentioned were more like the “tallest midget”, whereas our current crop I think are objectively better and more highly touted prospects.

I’ll never pretend to know anything about defensemen again after this board (including and especially me) spent years thinking Larsson, Fayne, Merrill, Gelinas, Urbom, and Severson were on the brink of becoming the next legendary group of Devils defensemen.

Yes that's very true. It must've just been that game then. I never went to the KHL site to look, I just saw something on twitter about how he was the TOI leader on the team. Must've been just that game.

i'm so sick of hearing about the urbom squad lol. the defensemen we have now were picked by a competent scouting staff, and the more time goes on the more faith i have in them.

i completely agree, and i think it was more or less virtual stockholm syndrome. We spent so much time waiting on the likes of Tyler Eckford and Brandon Burlon that any prospect with a modicum of promise had their hype amplified 10 times over.

The difference between what Urbom had accomplished by 19 and what Mukhamadullin’s done is vast. Just goes to show how starved the team was of young talent in the early 2010s.
