The bolded is really our last 3 seasons in a nutshell. By literally every metric other than tending, the Oilers are an elite team.

This is why lots of us are so against Skinner though. He is the reason we haven't won a cup, and he will continue to be the reason why we won't win a cup. He isn't the only reason, no, but he is, by far, the biggest reason. It's not fair to him in some ways, he is what he is after all. He seems like a really solid human, and I wish him nothing but the best. But I want a more consistent tender for my team. Even if the top end isn't as high as Skinner's top end can be. Skinner can play like a top-10 goalie in the world for a few games every now and then, but the valleys where he plays like a bottom-5 goalie in the NHL are too frequent. In the regular season, you can play through those valleys, in the playoffs though, it sinks you, full stop.

We need a better tender, everybody knows this.
And i don't disagree with that.

It's the ridiculous overreactions when the Oilers have a bad game and the PGT triples in size in comparison to a win because the wallowers need to complain about how terrible the team is, and that gets absolutely exhausting to read on here.

It's almost as if a large section of HFOil posters are only happy if they have something to whine about. if the team is playing solid, it seems they are out in their driveways kicking rocks, just waiting for a bad game to bitch about. That type of fandom is just strange to me.

To your point, we all know Skinner is not good, that's no secret, but whether the Oilers can win with him or not remains to be seen, they were 2 goals away from doing just that last year, but I think everyone can agree they would have absolutely won had they had more consistent goaltending.

It doesnt matter if we play the best defense in NHL history, sewer will let in a softie

Skinner's record since playing in the NHL would suggest otherwise.

It's like people here think other goalies don't let in softies.

Go watch the rangers the last 10 games and see how many softies Shesterkin let's in. It's more than zero that's for sure.

that’s a completely reasonable thing to say after a close loss after a 5 game winning streak in December.
It’s a knob polishing contest to see who can say the most outlandish thing after a loss.

This thread has double the posts of any GDT from a game we won from posters who only show up after a loss. There are so many wild takes in here and a lot of overly dramatic whining from stale primadonnas

Always...

Oilers win five games in a row, beating three top teams in the league. They have been playing outstanding team hockey for the last 15 games, and each PGT is about 6-9 pages long the next morning after a win. They lose one game where the team plays badly, and the PGT is 26 pages long the next morning, full of whining about how bad the team is, completely discounting the last month of excellent hockey the team has played.

I've been on this board for almost 20 years and it's only getting worse.

Everyone knows Skinner is a mediocre goalie prone to insane hot and cold stretches, he just came off a hot stretch of every game being .920 or better, but there is no mention of that from a certain contingent of posters here. The second he lays an egg though, which he and every other goalie in the league will do, the chicken littles are out in full force whining that the sky is falling.

The Oilers are a top team in the League by every metric, but they have inconsistent goaltending, yet coming to this board after a loss, you would think these are the 2011 DOD Oilers.
f***in eh rights.

If you had Sminner in net you would be too. They just don't have confidence in this guy and how could a team when Skinner is rattled. Count the bad goals tonight. Florida have expected goals of 3, or course turns into 6.

Someone on Twitter said Florida had FOUR grade A chances last night. I never verified it, but it seems to match the eye test.

That kind of bush league goaltending is inexcusable.

When an elite opposition goalie gifts you an off night, you’re meant to take advantage of that. Not double down with an even more putrid performance from your own starter.
That's the most frustrating thing. Bob was beatable and gave up 2 softies yet Skinner was still the worst goalie on the ice. It wasn't all Skinner's fault, Bouch was terrible on the shorty, Nurse took too many penalties (and the ref helped him too!) and the team at times were hemmed in. Good teams will hem in other teams at times, that's when you need your goalie to stand tall.

Ekholm's fall on the backtrack also stung us a bit too.

I give credit where credit is due and I criticize when criticism is due. Skinner definitely came off an excellent stretch of hockey, and against two of the leagues best which is Minnesota and Las Vegas.

WITH THAT SAID, I am allowed to criticize when he sucks and he simply sucked last night. Very very very good chance we win that game with Pickard in net last night. Yes people overreact on this forum, that's sports. Oilers fans aren't the only ones to do it

It was a very entertaining game, but it is definitely frustrating as it's a game we should have and could have won with slightly better goaltending. Chalk it up to a bad night from Skinner and move on now. We have some winnable games coming out starting with a very inconsistent Bruins team

Panthers had 6 high danger chances.
Oilers had 12 high danger chances.

Edit

To add to this. The high danger chances that were stopped by Skinner was one from Tkachuk, one from Verhaeghe and one from Nosek.

Islands in the stream.
Some unpacking a day later. Look at the GA last night where Skinner is glaring at his D. This happened on a couple occasions and at least once was a striking display. With the D on the ice that the stare is directed at is Ekholm. That took me aback. Because my immediate reaction to that is that Stu Skinner, a bit part flaw on a club should not be glaring at a D that is the foremost reason why Skinner gets to pretend he's an NHL starter. I wouldn't comment on it except its become an increasing thing with Skinner, and apparently he has the delusion to think he has licence to blame others on the team the very few times that they f*** something up. Sure Booch had a bad game. Skinner had the again worst GA you've seen with his brutal misplay of the puck just the previous game. No Oiler came up to him glaring and with hostility. Nobody did that. It was just another in a long line of Skinner farts and the team went forward and scored again to seal the result, a result in a gme where Skinner kept the opponent in the game.

This is two shit games in a row again from Skinner who has a penchant for these and he has the gall to glare at the stud D we've had over the last several seasons, or indeed all the time Skinner has been here. Now I've never seen Ekholm initiate this with Skinner, or anybody, I've just seen him be a real solid and stabilizing D and person on the club. It strikes me that the only reason Skinner is now doing this sort of thing (which has to be offputting coming from him) is that he models and invokes Mike Smith and somehow thinks he has the standing on the club to do this sort of thing. This is the nature of thought, exposed, that we have in net. A guy that is satisfied with making even expected saves, that gets overconfident and sells saves that are just routine in nature, and seems to be easily buoyed with his really nothingburger game and indeed seen bopping his head now in games continually feeling real good about himself and hardly ever blaming himself in any presser.

Skinner in love with himself, blaming others for GA, and even Ekholm. He can be right even on a specific goal or misplay, but he should not think he has that position in the group to do that. he hasn't earned that, like Mike Smith did. If you're glaring at opponents, and on the team the only other guy that does this is McD, you better have earned it.

Mike Smith famously glared at his team when he allowed a goal from the opposite blue line. Let's not put that asshole on a pedestal.

Also Vegas outchanced us by a significant margin. Why are saying Skinner sucked in that game? Because of the gaffe on the third goal?
