Post-Game Talk: Sewart Skinner in the FLA Swamp

Shooter made a 1 in 100 shot from a position no goalie even expects a shot from. How many shots like that are taken in a full NHL season you figure? Once? Twice?

Even if you are going to say Skinner is bad at “Behind the goal line bank shots off his mask” type shots. Who really cares it’s not gonna happen again lol.
Players throwing pucks at goalies from behind the goal line is not a rare play.

Launching a wrister at the back of the goalie’s head from the corner is common is it?

Players are shooting from behind the goal line (and scoring) quite often these days. Goalies really should be prepared for it.

I’d say any goal scored from behind the goal line is a bad goal for the goaltender to give up.

There are many more examples too

At about the 2:13 mark it looks like he flinches when he sees the puck coming for his head.
I wouldn't be surprised if he flinched.

I can't believe people are still defending this goal! Laughable!

Yes it's everyone's fault but the goaltenders that that guy scored on the goaltender from behind the red line.
It's crazy! Defending the Moustache like it's their day job!

It's a joke to me.

We went decades without having any of these GAs, and now suddenly we're just supposed to hand waive away and be fine with a guy having a legit highlight reel of blooper quality back breakers every year on top of having atrocious stats. Literally with every single year multiple of them being omnipresent in the playoffs.

I just don't get it.

Like maybe I've lost my ever living mind and have nostalgia rose colored glasses - but did Roli let in one goal like that in the 06 playoffs? Let alone the 5+ Skinner did last year in the playoffs?
Like.

Not necessarily shots to the back of the goalies head but this is from the NHL site for the 2022-23 season. I can't get the edge site working on my phone for the latest.. But players seem to have good odds with behind the goal line shots and may be shooting from there more often because of the trends from the analytics departments.

Edit: ignore me

I am able to look at the top 10 teams and there is very little goals from behind the line this year. Florida's 1 was probably from last night

Bobrovsky could have dumped the puck out of his own zone and if Skinner didn't stop it we'd have people in here excusing it by saying "how often do you see a goalie get a shot on net from their own end?"

100% agree and 100% agree that awareness of danger on the goal line is a weakness in Skinner’s game.

This wasn’t one of those types of shots or chances though.

I added more to my post because I was able to look on EDGE at the top 10 scoring teams to see how many goals they had behind the line. My post is just extra drabble now!

All the need to know for Skinner is shoot low blocker or high glove :(

Just shoot from anywhere on Skinner would be something I'd hammer my players on if I was playing the Oilers.

Dude is 75th in the league for GSAA for a reason. You'll likely get some "lucky" goals just throwing pucks at him.

He doesn't read plays well and will let in just about any manner of shot here and there.

Skinner saver percentage has him at 39th in the league. That tells you all you need to know. He isn't good! He isn't even average. He is capable of having a decent stretch here and there, but that is it. He's simply not good.

I know I joke all the time about being goalie but there are legit saves he gives up where myself or a high school kid could make. It's embarrassing

Players bulls eye-ing the side of a goalies mask from BEHIND the net is as rare as it gets. Can’t remember one other instance of it, can you? Above the goal line, I can remember a couple times, never from behind.

Nothing surprises me about a goal going in on Skinner. He's going to probably have a goal deflect off the scoreboard and bounce in off his ass one day.

He lets in weird/wonky goals all the time like Mike Smith except he's a very shitty version of Mike Smith.

I mean... That's what Skinner said after this goal;

And this one;

He lets in a lot of goodies from behind the red line.

1st one was below the goal line.

2nd one was like a net side jam, same as the one Bob let in last night.

The type of goal I asked about was behind the goal line, banks off the mask.

Yeah Mike Smith was awesome. Thank f*** we won this game.

The fact that he looked around to blame someone is what really sells this.

More common than I thought. But it looks like if the Player nails that shot it tends to catch the goalie off gaurd. Lots of good goalies in that highlight pack.
Well obviously the highlights are going to be the goals... more often than not its a nothing play because the goalie isn't caught napping or cheating the pass.

And a bad goal is a bad goal no matter who is in net.

I wouldn't mind being wrong where Stuart somewhat breakout and emerge as a quality starter,
but If you try to make me believe through revisionism history that he already proven that, that where you lost my attention.

Where I agree with you is that its easy to look at the goalie market and not finding anything that look much better, my point is that the organization made no effort in that regards for months, including drafting, to fill up our very shallow goaltending ''depth''

Overall, Skinner aside, we need more saves, regardless where they come from.
In 23-24, we give up 65 goal against in the playoff, good the 18th most by a team in a single post season, but we scored 86, good for the 12th rank in nhl history.

We were more than fine in output, we just needed bare minimum goaltending.
I don’t know what your definition of quality starter is. But it doesn’t matter cause Im not trying to convince you or anyone else that he’s an elite goalie or even great goalie or a quality starter.

He’s an an average goalie. But one that THIS team can win with. And that’s why we won 15 out of 16 last year on way to a Cup. I thought so last year at around the Quarter season mark. And depending on how the team continues to evolve this year, I may make that call again this year.

Have a look at the replay...run it at 1/4 speed.

The camera angle makes it tricky to see but it sure looks as if Skinner has the post sealed off from his shoulder down.
From behind the red line Reinhart put that puck off his head and down into the net. He could try that shot a 100 times (with Skinner in that exact position) and MAYBE Reinhart gets that to happen once.
There are goals where Skinner should be roasted for but the fact that many posters on here are picking that goal speaks volumes.

Are you really defending the goalie on a goal from behind the net.

There’s a reason goals from behind the net happen so rarely.

Judging by that replay there’s zero reason for him to be in the RVH and on his knees, there’s no pass option.

About par for the course here.

6 years in the playoffs, better than .915 goaltending one time (the first time in). Way things go in Edmonton.
Mmmmm. Damn!!!! That looks good whatever she's eating. I want one!

Why bother? These people wouldn’t smell shit if their nose was shoved in it
