Now that the Bay is closing down in Ottawa anyone with any idea's who will take over the massive real estate those stores took up?

Not sure how many department stores are left out there to take over that type of space but at least for the Orleans location I could see IKEA giving it a go. They wouldn't be competing with any of the other stores in the mall and definitely would generate foot traffic. I love IKEA but having to drive across the city for 1 or 2 tings makes it cost/time/benefit thing every single time. If that inter-provincial bridge ever gets built I could see it as a bonus for people living across the river.

If the government is serious about making affordable housing and converting buildings downtown and if they are keen to force people back into the office they could also turn the vacated stores in to government offices. It would overnight improve the commutes for people, take the strain off of the LRT(cut down on deaaaadly emissions) would make the malls full again. It's kind of a win/win situation.

Now the one downtown would probably need to be geared to a commercial tenant but I would love for them to throw an Eataly in there. This is a big city type of move and something Ottawa needs that would be such a perfect fit in that space.

The Bay locations will likely be refit to smaller spaces. Maybe a Simons in Bayshore. There's no way they'd have a second Ikea location in Ottawa unless it was a pickup spot instead of a full retail outlet.

A Time Out Market is better suited for Ottawa than an Eataly. Eataly is overpriced and expensive while Time Out Markets are more suited to Ottawa's middle class market.

I came to say malls are dead...but I think this is a brilliant idea.

A big box store that isn't already in Orleans. Something like Ikea or Costco would make sense. There's 100,000-150,000 in Orleans without an Ikea or Costco, and they have to drive almost halfway across the city.(Less so for Costco)

Hadn't heard of that place but yeah, similar idea.

The only difference between the two is that Eataly has an Italian themed retail component that Time Out Market doesn't. Putting a Time Out Market there would pretty much be a fancy food court that would compete with the Rideau center and the Byward market. Eataly is a more renowned name which would cater to our tourism market and add some much needed sophistication to the downtown core.

As for a Simons on one of the floors sure but they don't really have that big of a foot hold outside of Quebec. I said IKEA because both Toronto and Montreal have more than one.

I thought about Costco but there just isn't the access needed for the amount of daily deliveries. Also, Costco don't do rent.

The Ikea wouldn't be as big as the one in the west end but could definitely be, with a little reworking of the west side wall of the building, be a pick up location with essentials wares on the second floor.

Or turn it into a 2 floor indoor go kart track.
 
Thought about something like that too but the amount of loitering that would occur would be insane for such a prime location.
Yeah, but there will also be the new club/venue next door where the old Chapters was located, so they could really pull a 180 on that street and make it a place worth going again.

The venue/club will be dead during the day. The rec room seems like a place better suited for Landsdowne or Lebreton. The Bay building on Rideau is like the gateway/through fair to the market. It's probably one of most expensive commercial addresses in the city. You need a business that matches that.

TBH the whole market/Rideau street/Dalhousie look so run down and the stores there need updating.

What? No access? It's literally on the highway. Can't get better access than that. Light rail will be going there pretty soon too. If you mean, for truck depot, there are a few spots that directly back into the back of the bay.(Just checked and there are 6 truck loading zones going to the bay directly.) They could do renovations to add though. Keep in mind they have had grocery stores in the mall before, though not to the scale of Costco. Costco not doing rent is a good point...unless they can purchase a portion of the land they build on. Why would the current owners do that? Potentially to rejuvenate the rest of the their land.

I'd be fine with a pickup location. The main location is already pretty westward. Like 80% of the cities population is more east. If you google map it an zoom out, it's close to the farms passed Scotiabank place than it is to the downtown core. It's basically smack dab in the middle of the west half of the city....almost like it was meant to have another one smack dab in the middle of the east end of the city...like trainyards area...but they don't.

Just replying to the first post of yours I see as I can't find the post I want to reply to.

I remember you saying you only drive your car in sport mode or sport + mode because of the thrill or excitement.

I wanted to ask you if you drive it in manual mode or automatic?

I always seem to go manual mode when I go in sport or N mode because I find in automatic, it hangs or holds high RPM for track/race purposes, so if I give the gas hard to get infront of a guy but then let off...it will hold my rpm at like 5,000 incase I'm about to full throttle again, so I always wonder if it sounds weird to others hearing some car hold 5,000rpm for like 2-3 seconds while cruising in traffic lol.
Lol I just logged on my laptop and saw I was responding to this before. I never use the paddles but will try them out in the summer time when I boot out in the country. You are right it's the same in my car the rpms tend to hold really high.

Sport+ is just so much fun. I will need a mortgage for the gas I am consuming only driving in that mode but the exhaust note and the down shifts are so sexy, also nothing like flooring it with an unsuspecting passenger in my passenger seat and sending them flying back.

Its on the 174 so there would be enough access. The bay only has 2 loading docks for long haul trucks and I doubt the owners of the mall would want to entertain all of that redevelopment just to squeeze a mini Costco into. If a Costco ever came to Orleans it would be placed south of Innes but the new one they just built serves the east end perfectly.

If there was an IKEA in Orleans my house would just have so much more junk.

There's no need for a Costco 10 mins from an existing one, Costco caterers to people with cars almost exclusively, nobody is (well someone will, but most won't) buying the kind of stuff they are selling by bus or walking, so you don't need them that close together imo.
