lets just sign him to 20-24 million for 8 years. if he's worth 18 over 3 year that puts him at 39 essential by end of contract so he would be getting 2-6 million more then he would earn and his cap hit would be what 2.5-3 million and in years 5-8 were probably rebuilding anyways and once he can no longer play just LTIR him. doing this with Tanev so why not?

if thats not an option do one year deals nothing more imo. if he really wants to retire a leafs this is how.

I very much doubt he ends up getting $7 million. I wish the Leafs would walk away from him entirely.
He's Top-15 in goals per game and Top-10 in faceoffs this year league wide and you dont want him back next year at a discounted rate?

Even when the alternative is scrambling for a center better than Domi or Laughton?

What kind of a thing is going on here...

Crack out the MLSE money printer. Pay this man's back taxes! Poor guy forgot CRA was sin Winnipeg. Only a Jet can get away with that

It's great that Tavares shows up in a meaningless game in March against the Flyers. What I remember is what he was in the first round in Boston last year. Or against Florida in the second round the year before that. I don't want three more years of that.

You’ll have to suck it up, there is little chance he won’t be back. At this point it’s pretty much 100% he’s extended

I get wanting more, especially at 11M, but you probably end up with less, especially at sub 7M, even in the playoffs.

A plussed up Bennett maybe could work, but you might be lucky to end up with a Chandler Stephenson.

Risky play.

Not everyone is going to be 35 when next season starts.
I don’t for see a major decline, he has been pretty steady his whole career. No wild swings. I do expect his points to go down a little but he still will be worth 7.5 anyway. Find another 35 goal 75 point, top 10 faceoff man, who at one point this season was the number1 guy in the entire league in percentage of board battles won.

No one ever foresees a major decline....until it happens. Win the cup this season and then let him ride into the sunset.

Dude is unreal, yall.. hot takes from supposed homers don't change a dayumm thing. People still looking for a scapegoat, and this man ain't it.. never has been.
Heres a hot one from me --> Is he almoooosssttt better today than the day he signed? Hahaa.. That's f'in insane to even say out loud, but it's close if not true!

O Captain, my Captain. Unreal.

Still say he has been grossly overpaid his entire contract, and I'm hoping this resurgence doesn't mean we repeat the same mistake again.

That said, I'm really glad he's playing well especially with Matthew$ being useless this year.

Do you understand the context and politics around how high-profile, prime-of-their-career UFAs are valued in this league, and what an anomaly it is to have someone like him come available that can be signed for just cap space, without giving up assets?

We got a basically PPG player for 7 years FOR FREE, just cap space, who's going to put up around 35 goals in the seventh year of his contract, which is basically unheard of? Who are you comparing his salary against when you call him "grossly overpaid"? If you're not comparing his salary to other high-profile UFA signings, and there's not a lot of them, it's a unicorn situation, you're comparing apples to oranges.

100% Goose. Crybaby Leaf fans will never get it, tho... Let 'em be. Again - plenty of contract threads around. And clowns want to hijack this one for that nonsense too. Literally the best free agent signing in the history of the Cap area, but ya - poor us..!!

Remember how we thought this contract would age..?!? Dude is on top of his game.

If he doesn't sign for 5m x 3 years or less...you have to walk away like Tampa let their captain walk away.

Can't make a mistake here.

Yep, it really is one of the best. In fairness, I think there are clearly a couple better ones, where cups were won (Chara, Hossa - though Hossa's contract is ONLY salvaged because of the cups, otherwise it's awful at the end) or production was better (Panarin), but he's Top 10 for sure, and probably more like Top 5 when it comes to players who went true open-market bidding and changed teams, it's not really legit to compare him to guys like Reinhart or MacK who stayed in place on clear or semi-team-friendly deals, though there are also a lot of UFAs who stayed in place who his contract is much better than, such as guys like Huberdeau, Benn, Doughty, Karlsson (aside from his Norris year.)

In terms of UFA team switchers he handily beats guys like Richards, Parise, Gaudreau, Vanek, Radulov etc. What was unique about Tavares was just how rare it was to have open-market bidding for a PPG, 1OA, Captain in his prime like that, it just doesn't happen often.

That was his playoffs last series. He wasn't a "scapegoat", he was a borderline useless $11M player.

By all means enjoy the great season he's having but we don't have to make things up.

Tampa was smart, they got the rights to Guentzel for a 3rd round pick and signed him to a deal more than they offered Stamkos. If they couldn’t make a deal with Guentzel I doubt they would have let Stamkos walk. What are our plans for replacing JT besides the just let him go mantra?

Scapegoat, my guy. He scored the only series winning goal in our only series win against Tampa, in case you forgot. Not good enuff for you?!? Who else of these f'in pansies did it..?!?! F'in no one else.. that's who.

Oh! And he did it twice, btw.. with a beauty in the first series we shoulda won - until Justin Dolt Holl f'd that up, unnecessarily.

Wow... of all dudes to have a gripe with, yall showin me your bloodtype by pickin it with JT - a dude who actually had the sac to come home and also actually kept his end of the bargain through a contract nobody thought he would..

make up another boogeyman somewhere else, my man
