I got a 10week Maine Coon kitten... He's going to be a pretty badass cat... It attacks my other two cats already without fear... The amount of energy it has is pretty nuts too

Maine Coon's are awesome cats! So damned mellow when they get older. They know they're alphas and don't give a ****.

Last week Nature of Things did a documentary on Pompeii and I was left wondering - is there a mock Roman village somewhere in Italy (or even Europe)?

I don't know how many of you have been - but south of Ottawa there's a place called Upper Canada Village and it's a functioning mockup of an 1800s village. A mill, the various farm buildings, houses, a post office, I think a telegram office too.

Fully functional. There were staff and children (who volunteered for their summer vacation(?)) dressed up to fit the time period and some of them had 'jobs' that they would have had back then.

I always wondered if there are more places out there like Upper Canada village but for different time periods, cultures and 'nations'.

Think it has to do with the Benghazi incident. But that's about as political as we should take it.
I'm torn on whether or not to watch the new Rogue One trailer.

I try to make it a point to only watch the initial hype trailer and that's it for any movie so that nothing is spoiled going in (or at least I'll have forgotten details by then).
It's made watching a lot of the big movies lately more enjoyable imo

In Germany it's set up more as a museum but there is Pfahlbaumuseum
Also we've got the Doon Heritage village here.
And pretty sure there's reenactment places all over the southern US

Yeah. With Westworld and the documentary from Nature of Things it got me thinking.

A mockup of a Roman settlement could be pretty big attraction. A lot of people go to Italy for the history and ruins... and they'd likely go for "step back in time...".

Now obviously you'd have to ignore some stuff to make it family friendly and legal (like say the brothels and the violence) but it could be pretty interesting.

Edit: Now I don't know if they have such a thing or not... which is why I asked.

So apparently they are making 5 more Harry Potter movies. Never was a big fan of the series, but did they learn anything from the Hobbit movies?

Five?
I just found out that Fantastic Beasts is actually going to be a trilogy  but that's old news apparently.

Cursed Child is a play.

What are the other sources for movies?

edit: Just found the source saying that Fantastic Beasts is actually being stretched into five movies  The physical book is only 128 pages!!!
Pretty sure that's going to beat the record for minutes per page in a book based on this accounting:

SUCH nonsense. What's next, a seven-movie series on Quidditch Through the Ages? A ten-movie deal for Tales of Beedle the Bard?

Oooh... Miracle or even Mystery, Alaska done as a Quidditch movie actually sounds amazing :yo:

And don't be giving the execs any ideas about Beedle

Just got offered a new job.

Hoping to keep working weekends at my current one, live off the part time wages, and just rake in the savings.

Current movies playing at my nearest theatre:

Based on Novels: 4
Based on True Stories: 2
Remake of an earlier film: 1
Sequels: 1
Documentaries: 2
Original Stories: 1 horror, 1 (that is not produced by Hollywood, but is instead a Chinese film), and 1 with a sequel announced

I am not saying that films being based on a pre-existing source material are bad, but it seems absurd how few original ideas Hollywood makes. I don't have any statistics for this, but most of the films that are original stories are just cliche, formulaic mediocre to poor comedies or horror films. Are they just not willing to take the risk of making new stories?

Yep. In pretty much every entertainment industry, the willingness to attack new IP is pretty much entirely in the realm of the independent creators.
Then they cash out and sell it to the big names.
But honestly it's that way in most industry.
Startups take the risk, the big corps buy them out if they're worth it

It's so irritating!

I slept through the first hobbit movie and have refused to watch any more. The money grab makes me not want to watch movies anymore.

Although just started watching the new series Pitch. And I'm liking it. It's a bit girly but because it's baseball themed and well filmed the bf likes it too (so much better than lost which he's making me watch).

Also congrats on the new job Sask! Good call on building savings. It is nice to think you'll have money for your future!

Video games is a good example of how damaging this kind of attitude is.

Big budget projects have their pitfalls baked-in by execs who seldom seem to consider the longer term.

The nice thing is that a lot of indie games seem to be getting better. I don't really know anything, but I'm assuming technology is making it easier to just focus on design. I love indie, and the best game series of recent memory is indie (Witcher).

In terms of movies / TV, I've pretty much exclusively switched to anime and podcasts. Although lots of anime is tropey and cookie cutter (even the high budget stuff), every season there's always at last 1-2 legitimately great works of art.

This Fall season had 91 Days, which is an awesome mafia / alcohol prohibition era show. Best thing since the Sopranos (different tone/premise), and I like it more than Boardwalk Empire, but that's just my opinion.

Movies are mostly all the same and all fall the same pattern and follow the same PC narratives.
