Book was still better, though that's more a glowing reccomendation for the book than it is a slam against the movie.

I love the movie. LOVE it. But the book is possibly one of my favorites.

(Caveat: I am a big Pahlaniuk fan)

Agreed. One of the few movies that I looked forward to seeing after reading the book that lived up to the source materiel itself.

Watchmen on the other hand.....

There were a few faults in the movie (some unnecessary liberties made by Snyder), but there was never going to be a Watchmen movie that was going to satisfy fans of the graphic novel.

That comic is too good, too long, and Moore's style was not going to ever translate onto film.

Legit beefs I had with that film:
- Use of famous rock/pop songs didn't fit with the mood of the film (a typical Snyder beef I have)
- Terrible casting of Ozymandias. Absolutely terrible. They turned him from being a complex character with a very engaging internal struggle to a crappy connect-the-dots chickens**t cowardly villain.
- Awful ending change (note: they HAD to change the ending for film... the original comic ending would not have translated AT ALL to a movie... but they changed it to that shlocky crap ending that pinned it on Mr Manhattan)

Other than that, the casting was actually really... REALLY good. Movie was enjoyable when you consider it was doomed from the beginning.

It would have to be a 5+ hour movie to actually fit everything from the novel in.

Tales of the Black Freighter was an obvious cut, but the omission is a shame as the parallels between the story and story inside the story are great.

Ozy was the worst part for me. The character was played out awful.

I was disappointed in some of the missing scenes, "Raw-Shark" probably my favorite. (Why even introduce the detectives at the start of the movie?)

I cringed at 99 Red Balloons and Hallelujah.

Pinning it on Manhatten? Come on, that is such a lame Cop Out.

Then people wonder why Alan Moore won't let studios use his name on movies based on his work. The only one that is passable is "V for Vendetta".

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

EWWWWWWWWW

Constantine was alright though...

"V for Vendetta".
Agreed. Best Moore film adaptation out there.

Hugo Weaving was brilliant in that movie - to emote the way he did with only his voice and body movements, without any facial expression - was brilliance on his part.

From Hell
Meh. Not 100% terrible, but certainly not fitting to have Moore's name attached.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Biggest offender, in my books. The comics are some of my favorites, but they turned what was a really cool concept - a historical all-star lineup of fictional literary characters-turned-unlikely team of super heroes - into a crap summer blockbuster paint-by-numbers snoozefest. Lazy writing, lazy directing, lazy casting...

"Here. (hands the director the LXG comics). This is a really good concept. Can you kill it and re-animate the deceased remains into a wholly uninteresting and unwatchable mess? We will give you a $78 million dollar budget to do this... oh, and just so we're clear, you are to make it so bad that there is no hope of recouping our money at the box office, capice?"

Constantine was alright though...

It was good because Keanu made the character his own. If he had tried to play the part of John Constantine as he is portrayed by Moore, it'd have been awful.

Sooooo Postmedia just bought SUnmedia?

I've never been a fan of the Sun but damn . . . its not a good thing when so few own so much.

Does Ottawa still only have the Citizen and the Sun as its only two papers?

As the two major ones, yes, (not including the French Le Droit) meaning that both will be under the sway of Postmedia now.

Metro is a division of Torstar if I recall. 24hrs is (was?) Sun Media but a lot of those have been discontinued.

The Metro is still available in Ottawa, as well as the Ottawa Citizen and the Sun. 24 is no longer available in Ottawa.

Many years ago, I was a subscriber to the Ottawa Journal and the Winnipeg Tribune, when I was living in Ottawa. Both newspers were closed down on the same day by the owners of each. They said it was not collusion. That left the Ottawa Citizen and Winnipeg Free Press as the two surviving papers.

I think we are friends again.

I did appreciate him trying to stay close to the style is some of the more iconic scenes.

I enjoyed the Watchmen when I saw it in the theatre. My memory of the graphic novel was fuzzy at the time, and I loved the way some scenes freeze-framed to mimic iconic panels. And yes, it really was never going to satisfy the hard core crowd.

To me the absolute worst was making the mistake of buying the director's cut. You would think, with all that was left out, that a director's cut would be an improvement. It actually sapped the life out of the story, and was painful to watch.

I'm curious about whether this means the Sun will actually report news instead of spinning right wing ideology.

Yeah, it might actually translate into the paper being less obviously biased.

I still think it'll remain the "4th grade" equivalent to the Citizen, though. They'll continue to make sure the articles are written to cater to the barely literate crowd, they've set themselves up a fairly decent niche: "cheap paper for the working man". You'll never get rich with that formula these days, but you'll still make a buck.

All that being said, the potential for departmental shuffling & re-structuring under the new ownership is possibly the closest Don Brennan will ever come to being fired. We can all hope, right?

The media oligopoly in this country is growing.

Seriously, what percent of the TV stations, Radio stations, and News Papers do Bell, Rogers, Shaw, Postmedia, Newcap and Corus own?

The Ottawa Sun is the best selling newspaper in town is it not? I don't think it would be wise for the new owners to change it

Of course I think it would best for humanity as a whole if they just burned the offices down and we could all pretend the Ottawa Sun never existed but that's not what I'd call a reasonnable expectation

A student at the ESL school I teach at told me that all my girls students talk about how I'm the hot white teacher.

Makes me feel pretty dope... Like that scene in Indiana Jones. I catch them often writing my name on their papers with hearts around it.

Nice Polak, that's always a nice feeling!

Now I'd like to formally request the lounge's help

I'm trying to get back into music: I used to be all hip but then I got older and the 80's revival came into full swing, life got in the way and I sort of stopped keeping track

I was recommended The War on Drugs because Lost in the Dream got critical acclaim and I must admit not being impressed although I get it, I think it's safe to say I would have loved it if something like this came out in 2005... The entertainment board seems to be filled with the younger folk who love that kind of stuff so I figured I'd ask here

I'm looking for anything you think is excellent that isn't rap/hip-hop or stuff like that Skrillex dude since I just don't care for it. I'm especially fond of instrumental post-rock stuff but also love the more out there stuff in jazz or classical (Bela Bartok is a god) and am also down with bluegrass

I used to be a big fan of The Hoosiers. Mr A. is a sweet song. You might enjoy then. I'm bad help in general, since I usually listen mostly to instrumental music and video game covers haha

Though if it's high school age, or near it - make a point of keeping the door open and always at least two students in the room then.

Because last thing you want is rumours.
