Anyone have an android? If so, what are some decent apps?
I'll stay away from music/movie/etc apps, because there's a lot of personal preference there - the kind of things I like aren't necessarily the same as other people, etc...
1) Google Map app saved my butt a few times, but it should be standard on your phone, so you should already have it. If you don't have it though - get it. The number of times you will use it will honestly surprise you.
2) Google Translate on Android is also awesome & WAY better than the iOs verson, because you can download language packs and use the translator when it's offline, which is such an amazing benefit when you are traveling in a country where you don't know the main language. Just being able to read storefront signage in a foreign country is a massive, massive win.
3) Other than that:
-
NavFree is a decent free GPS, if you're in need of one.
-
WhatsApp is basically free texting, if your friends also have it. My wife and I use it constantly, text all day as long as we're within wifi range (which we usually are) and costs us nothing.
- Depending on what city you live in, and how realistic taxi travel is, a lot of companies have taxi-reservation apps that are super useful. In Jakarta, you can go about 5km in a cab for about $3.50, so it's absolutely worth it.
-
Evernote is a great little app for a bunch of day-to-day things: taking notes, making "to do" lists, etc...
-
Stitcher Radio is a podcast-specific app - it's like Pandora for podcasts. It's pretty sweet.
-
Feedly is probably the best RSS reader. So there's that.
-
Mint is pretty good for keeping track of finances. If you're wondering where all your money is going every month, this is for you.
-
QuickOffice supports MS Office documents, so it's one of the best free apps for excel & powerpoint things on your phone.
