Canada Computers have some solid prefabs that can match your needs. The people at the merivale location at least know their stuff and don't seem too pushy. Buddy got one for 3 grand last year that's a solid gaming rig. Could have saved some bucks building it himself or having me do it for him, but just wanted to get it and be done with it. I prefer to build em myself, and usually by most of the parts from there, just finished a build today. Their prices are competitive with amazon and other distributors, sometimes have great sales on top of it. I always prefer getting big parts locally incase you get a defective piece, can just drive and swap it out instead of waiting for shipping.

If u want advice, lemme know what you're looking for and DM me or something. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've been building my gaming and work rigs for the past 20 years.

Silly question...but how long should a typical gaming computer last?

I have a 4/5 year old PC right now, and it feels like it's starting to labor a bit with some of the more intense gaming sessions. But it's a big investment if it only lasts 5 years or less.

It depends on what kind of stuff you put in there, quality of parts. I try to get a few things that will last, and upgrade parts over time. Every few years replace a piece.

I usually try to get a higher end motherboard that can handle a processor upgrade in 4 or 5 years time. A heavy duty power supply that will last. Swap out the graphics card. Try to get two big chips of ram instead of 4 smaller ones so you can add more if need be.

Hard drives tend to randomly die. But they're easily replaceable. Some pieces might last you a decade. But thats rare.

I guess 4 or 5 years is a standard lifespan for a rig you use for gaming or video editing, should u buy it all in one piece.

I have a Gigabyte 4090 and it has been glorious
Ya I don't even really game much. I play starcraft broodwar lol and a little bit of call of duty. I'll definitely need to get into some other games and take it for a teat drive.

I'm gonna need people to give a list of games I need to play.

If you really want to push that 4090 Cyberpunk 2077 remains the top dog.

It is a 4k GPU. Crank everything to the max!

Mine's coming up on 4 years this summer. One of my fans has gotten really noisy and I guess I may have to replace it. Kind of my own fault as I'd been neglectful in terms of cleaning the dust out and a a heck of a lot had built up, which I guess resulted in some permanent consequences.

you are using an adblocker.

Yup.

Disable?

Nope.

Anyone else getting the cookies window coming up every time you switch pages on here? I click Purposes, uncheck everything, Save and Exit and then next time I change pages it pops up again. Evidently it's not going to let me rest until I approve all, but I'm pretty sure it should legally only be able to bug me again if the uses actually change.

PC gaming has been a mess for the last year because of DX12. I'll spare the technical details but essentially a lot of recent games stutter and it has nothing to do with hardware.

5 years may feel short but that is actually quite decent. It is all about the consoles, now that we are leaving the PS4/XboxOne behind newer games become much more demanding (the PS4 and XboxOne had garbage CPUs from the start).

The biggest factor for PC gaming right now is resolution. If you are gaming at 1080 you really don't need the expensive stuff.

I used to for a while but now it is only every now and then.

I need a top end cpu. I was thinking I was going the thread ripper route but I can save money and not build a machine that powerful because there are ways to do poker sims without running them through your system like you used to have to. However I run a lot of emulators to play poker and it eats a ton of cpu, the more you use. Also my databases are so large now so it's taking even more to run that as well. So I would like to get something probably with the i9-13900ks. I do game a bit, nothing crazy but I plan on buying a really good gpu as well. I am getting a bit into ai and vr stuff so I don't want my next computer to be hindered in anyway. I plan on spending 7k ish maybe more or less just from my browsing and playing around.
What do you use the emulators for? And are the databases for hand history? Are you building your own range chart with the data you have?

I build my opponents ranges and game treees with their data and run Sims according to their ranges.

Hey, did something happen to the search feature on the site? Maybe it's just my tablet but I can't find it. And then I clicked on "your content" looking for one of my posts and got some weird message that I didn't have permission to do that.

@Micklebot what gives?

They are doing some work on the search function,

If it's not related to that you can start a thread in the support forum but I suspect your issue stems from the ongoing indexing

Behind you, look out
Why is it so hard for people to do their job these days?

Traded in my Kia Soul in December for a new Rav 4.
Toyota said they would send the cheque to BMO (the loan holder) on the soul for balance.
BMO has taken out 2 months of payments out and when I called them, they said that I still owe the balance on the car.

So I am paying for 2 cars right now and am only in possession of one.

Buying cars has become astoundingly painful.

I'm exercising the purchase option on my lease, buying an extended warranty and hopefully not speaking to a salesperson for the next 5 years.
