Smith mentioned the future captain of the team may not be ready just yet. Tkachuk or Chabot obvs. But separately went out of his way to mention Pageau as a guy the youngsters can learn from. May see him as a transitional captain. I’d be fine with that. Would make a lot of his haters crack and smiling head nod too.

They're all stop gaps in Ottawa.

If they fail, they'll just be fired like the rest. If they succeed, they'll price themselves out of Ottawa and leave for better opportunities.

I get the joke but when has that ever happened? It's only been the former since 2007

That also goes for the front staff, the players, the guy serving up the slices, the valet staff, Sparty, Zamboni driver... Uncle Euge has the padlock on the wallet. I’m surprised he pays the hydro bill during off season.

Good point. Everyone we've hired has been too busy stinking up the joint for the most part. Maybe we shouldn't be so cheap and hire reputable coaches and executives.

Look at it this way, Smith was the most suited(probably) for the job from the field that they interviewed. In the world Dorion and Melnyk have fans living in, it's a win.

Can we reasonably assume this even? There may have been candidates that fell apart at the financial terms point similar to the rumours around the Boudreau/Boucher hirings.

Elliot Friedman mentioned on the 31 thoughts Pod that when DJ played he was a Newport Sports client, thinks there may be a connection there.

Strange if true, thats still fairly random. You would think that Brady would have to know him personally (maybe through the family?) for him to actually push hard for him to be hired.

Regardless, this isnt bad news I guess. DJ was not even close to being on my radar for the HC, but I cant lie, despite my initial frustration, I do like what hes said so far. He really seems to take joy from developing young players, which is the exact opposite of Boucher (they felt eerily similar at first).

Watched the press conference.

I liked how fired up Dorion got when asked about salary. You can tell he hates that question.

DJ Smith said all the right things, but so does everyone in that position. I was really disappointed this morning but it has passed and here's to hoping for the best.

So Mendes mentioned DJ smith said he started preparing for this interemview by watching sens video the moment the leafs were eliminated. Said apparently he was likely the most well prepared for the interview.

This is similar to how Boucher preped well in advance and came in extremely well prepared to win over Dorion.

It's certainly not a negative coming in well prepared but i wonder how Dorion handicaps candidates that are late additions like Boudreau last time or Roy this time who may not have the opportunity to prepare by watching hours of video.

Was pretty funny for sure.

And I totally agree with the 2nd point. My extreme disappointment has passed after hearing DJs interviews. If nothing else, he seems like hes fantastic at working with kids, and takes a real joy in working with them.

But we've been here before with Boucher, who had no problem winning over the entire fan base and media with his articulate way of selling hope in his first interview.

And for that exact reason, DJ is gonna still have to prove it to me before I can agree that this was a good hire. Roy was a potential home run, and Martin was almost a sure bet. So DJ has a lot to prove in my eyes.
