Even if you are not able to give an example of precedence of this, the lack of evidence does not prove the lack of these decisions being made.
In theory, it doesn’t have to have happen before for it to happen to Zaitsev. Although as you have already said, there is a lack of proof because no NHL player would rather play on the best AHL team as opposed to the worst NHL team (slight hyperbole, but barely).
The NHLPA has nothing to do with this.
In a separate action, the Ottawa Senators send Zaitsev to Belleville for two weeks. They are allowed to do this.
They tell Zaitsev they do not think he is suitable for their pro club, would he waive his right to veto a trade?
He will say yes, and again, it happens and we have no proof of it.
It is not crossing any lines to send a player down. It is not crossing any lines to ask a player to revoke his right to his ntc.
We see both happen all the time, it’s asinine to believe that it has not happened together in the history of the NHL.
You see the issue with the NTC with star players that have value, we would not be able to do this with Stützle or Tkachuk. Zaitsev? The threat of being buried in the AHL is real.
It’s called leverage, the NHLPA and NHL bend it to their will all the time. Zaitsev has no leverage.
