Weekes: Senators willing to trade high pick or prospect to dump Nikita Zaitsev's contract

I think a 2nd will get rid of Zaitsev contract.
A 1st and 2nd , [ The one they were going to waste ] and Zaitsev could return a player/prospect they have an eye on.
A mid to late 2nd round pick is not a "high pick" to me. I think past trades to dump contracts (Monahan, Marleau, etc.) show a mid-late first value is about 6 millions USD worth in cap for a year. Zaitsev has a year and a half left at 4.5.

It’s a good point in a vacuum, but he really doesn’t have a no-team trade list when his other options is going from chartered flights to riding buses across the country in a long grind.

Being anywhere in the NHL is much better than being waived to go to Belleville.
The value is the issue, not the no trade clause.

Zaitsev would not enact his right to veto to one of the ten teams he has in favour of going to the AHL.

The no movement clause has nothing to do with his anchor of a contract and our inability to find a reasonable trade value wise.

If we were willing to send the other team 10 first round picks, and that team was on his list, there would be no issue.

It’s the picks, not the no trade clause.

The no trade clause is the issue insofar as he can't be traded to any of the 10 teams on his no trade clause list without him expressly waiving that clause.

You seem to think it's not an obstacle at all, because if the Sens try to move him to one of those teams, and he refuses, the Sens can say "either waive it or we'll send you to the AHL".

If sending Zaitsev to the AHL like you want the Sens to threaten to do would solve the problem they're trying to solve (whatever that may be), they would simply do that first without trading him along with a high pick or good prospect. Because why would they pay one of those to move him when simply waiving him would solve the issue the Sens are trying to solve by trading him?

Waiving him and sending him to the AHL, therefore, doesn't solve the problem. Therefore, threatening to do so if he doesn't waive his NTC would be an empty threat, because ultimately they would still need to trade him because waiving him didn't solve the problem.

That's why they need to attach the pick and/or prospect to get the deal done.

So yes, the value required to move him is an obstacle, but you also need to work around his NTC to find a team willing to take him, and that he's willing to go to.

My guess is they have to dump his contract fast in order to make room for Chychrun.

Other teams are probably interested so they need to make that happen soon

I don't think a team take that contract right now for under a mid 1st value.
I could see a three way with Columbus hopping in to facilitate cap complications.

To Columbus :Zaitsev + Ottawa 1st(+), + various extra cap compliance pieces

To OTT : Chychrun

To AZ: Required pieces for Chychrun

Just a rough draft, not really sure it would work now that I type it all out. But Columbus has been rumored to be looking to take on cap during a lost season. And while Columbus would ideally like to add Chychrun themselves, they aren't in a spot to do that. So grab some extra pieces in a lost season. Either take those picks and continue to stock the pool or look to package the picks with other pieces to find themselves and upgrade in the off-season / next season.

Ever heard about that Chychrun guy?

My guess is Ottawa wants to show DeBrincat they are serious about contending in order to get him to sign long term. The only way to do that is to get a top 4 D for that defense.

Step 1. You dump Zaitsev for the cheapest possible (I think a 1st will be needed, but I could be wrong).
Step 2. You get Chychrun that is already signed for cheap for 2 mores years for futures (1st, 2nd, Boucher, Branstrom/other roster player)
Step 3. You sign DeBrincat long term.

Now you show to all the suitors that want to buy the team that it is competitive and ready to contend.

My guess is that your guess/premise throw at the dartboard is simply wrong, invalidating the rest.

If the Sens offer AD a fair contract, it would appear by all informal accounts and “people in the know” is that he would be happy to re-sign in Ottawa.

this is definitely the important part to take away here.

If Murphy is willing to waive (Who knows if he would) for Ottawa the Hawks/Sens would be perfect trade partners

This one makes sense.

Ottawa won’t pay more for Chychurn than they did for DeBrincat

Refresh my memory on how long Debrincat had on his contract and what digit the extension is expected to start with. Was it an 8 or 9 and how many years? 7 or 8?

Would be so dumb to help another team by giving them a "high pick" or a good prospect just to dump Zaitsev immediately. No need to let other teams take advantage of the Sens situation.

Keep the 1st and the other higher-end prospects. Pay the Zaitsev bonus and send him off for a much more affordable price in the off-season.

Zaitsev + Thomson to Buffalo for a 3rd.

Then you could just waive him. I think the point is to not pay the bonus.

I think the Sens could easily get a better younger player for their 1st and Zaitsev .

I think you gotta add in a 2nd and prospect.

The 2nd and prospect alone to dump Zaitzev

The 1st to get the player your eyeing

Why does ARI need to involve CBJ.. other than a CBJ fan wants to get a free asset?

Those guys both had far greater cap hits, at a time when cap space is/was far less plentiful, with teams under a far more severe crunch, and there wasn't the opportunity of paying 40% of their salary like there is with Zaitsev. Not to mention, a 1st for Vegas and Calgary is more similar to a 2nd from Ottawa than it is to a 1st from Ottawa. Not to mention I never said just one of those prospects.

But yes, when you remove all those factors, I'm clearly hopped up on crazy pills.
2 years vs 1 is a massive difference. There's also the fact that both Monahan and Patches are decent hockey player whereas Zaitsev is an AHLer. It won't specifically coat their 1st round pick in 2023 but it will cost likely cost a mid-late 1st in value (either prospect or pick). The cost for dumping bad players has gone up since the Ladd trade.

Oilers moved Kassian to Arizona. He is on 3.2 for another year and it cost and 2nd and 3rd and trading down 4 spots in the first round this draft. So If Arizona gets involved they may ask for something similar

Is Zaitsev so much of a problem the Sens will give up important futures (they’re not a playoff team) to move him a year sooner than waiting and trading him as an expiring contract rental in 2024? He’s likely to have some value at the 2024 TDL, right?

It would take at least a 2nd round pick next year at this same time, will def take more than that this year with 1.5 seasons to go
as I just posted it took a 2nd, 3rd and dropping 4 spots in the first round to move Kassian. Even though 50% of the season is gone, the drop in the first round covers that

But the Oilers are a playoff team that is needing cap to try and win now. The Sens aren’t in the same situation.
