Is Marcus Sörensen still bound to Ottawa if(more like when) he'll get the chance to play in the NHL? Or is he free to choose from whoever gives him a offer?

No we can't. We draw 20k fans for a winner. We outdrew the Leafs in our Cup finals year and the year before. (Bigger arena here).

Now we are drawing 16-17k for some games.

When we truly sucked a few tears ago the Canadian Flag sent around during the anthem had a hard time staying off the ground we had so many empty (and expensive 100 level seats).

If we suck... We lose like 30% of team revenue vs when we are elite. We can't tank.

The team won't fold if we suck for 3 or 4 years. But it sure won't turn a profit. We win we come close to selling out 41 games a year at higher ticket prices. We sick and we will have many 15k and 16k games. Win 19k and 20k games.

We aren't the Rangers or the Leafs. And our rich owner is not so rich anymore so we can't hemorrhage money by being terrible and drawing bad. Nor pass on playoff revenue.

yeah thats what i said.. we cant have a season of being bad, but i think melnyk would unmderstand the losses of one year vs the revenues of the next 15 of having mcadavid... mcdavid fills our stadium by himself. not to mention creates thousands of sens fans around north america and europe.. melnyk is a bussines man, im sure he understand paying the price this year.

Thanks guys!

Have no idea how it works so just wondered. He's been really good lately and it feels like he's just been getting better and better last two years or so. A couple more pounds of muscles on that body and I think he might be in the NHL soon

Oh and we are most definitely one of those teams... for one year though... im sure melnyk would rather have mcdavid ( massive marketing tool that we have never had) for the next 15 years. than finish 9th in the east. heck i think he would rather have mcdavid long term than finish 8th in the east this year.

Note: all hypothetical.

Probably, but like I said, it isn't easy for a non terrible team to finish last.

I was always big big fan of Sorensen. I watched him personally on couple occasions and he had all the skill and I believe he was mismanaged and not given opportunity to succeed. Big name scouts said they expected him to become next Silfverberg and one of best players but his development stalled. I personally was shocked we didn't qualify him but it was understood at the time considering the amount of players we had and the gamble to not qualify him.

Still has a ways to go I'd think but good to hear him progressing.

This is all possible. Had a brief convo with P Dorion last year about him, he said his body type probably wont allow him to be an NHL player just too slight and very hard for him to gain mass.

Maybe he can breakthrough this year, best of luck to him

Still patiently waiting for the day a scout or GM calls one of their prospects garbage in a media availability...

I think I know what point you're trying to make.

You're never gonna see that. For one, radio people don't typically ask questions about prospects that aren't going anywhere . Two, GMs don't typically bring up the names of prospects that are going nowhere.

When a gm says something like dorion just did. You can translate it to things like: this may be our best prospect.

If you're willing to disregard a comment like that, it's as if you think every prospect in the system is said to be amazing. Shane prince was told to pull up his socks.

A scout/gm picks his spots when saying something like that. It's worth taking into account, but not meant to be taken like we have some guarantee.

According to dorion, wikstrand is probably one of the best dmen outside of the NHL.

Say what you will but that's a good sign.

yeah that's real good news! wow we got the next lidstrom. like i said, dorion gets prospect giddy easily
Tim Murray for example(ya ya my favorite) would never say that about one of his young prospects. let alone a guy like wikstrand. not saying wikstrand doesn't have a shot and isn't a good player, but...

Pay more attention then.

Jordan Fransoo?

They praise the players worthy of praise, they say little about the ones that need work or they say comments that indicate they need to improve.

Telling a prospect that you are investing time, money and effort in, that he is garbage is pretty stupid.

Tim Murray has done this.

You definitely took dorions comments out of context.

We have boro, gryba, weircioch that didn't make the NHL until 22 or passed that...they never got this type of praise.

Like I said, no guarantees, but an organization that has developed players very well is saying they think they've got a player.

And I add this to the evaluation a couple years ago that this guy looked fine had we picked him in 4th.

You guys are brutal lol. "Oh my god, our scout says he's really good? I bet that's BS"

Take the middle ground. If anything it's good news.

Why can't we just be happy with what can only be described rationally as good news.

Dorian really likes this guy, and Dorian has been largely responsible for our drafting. Whether or not Wick pans out, this is nothing but positive news.

We're supposed to smile when we hear good news, no one's asking anyone to bet their house on it.

I can't recall anybody saying anything about Jordan Fransoo ever. In any context. Probably for good reason.

I don't really expect what I said to actually happen, nor do I think it's a good idea. I'm also not passing any judgement on the quality of player that Wikstrand may or may not be, just reminding people that these media availability things are sales pitches just as much as they are prospect updates.

it's not news. it's an opinion of the guy that drafted him. It's not a big deal, i'd just rather they say things like 'he's looking very good so far, if he keeps working at it he could have a good shot at making the league'
i don't see how saying he's the best guy outside of the nhl or one of the best guys or whatever kind of guy helps at this point.

Sure, which is why you don't hear about the prospects that aren't goin anywhere. And when you do, it's sugar coated. You do need to have a slight amount of ability to read between lines.

But when your gm/head scout uses very specific language to describe a player it's not he's saying something he doesn't actually believe.

Now I'm fine with the idea that just because someone says somethig doesn't mean it turns out true.

Just saying it's positive news.

It's like a couple of you thought my post could be translated as : omgzzz Norris dman en route to O town!!!!1111

Dorion could think this way about the player and use more conservative language to describe his play, that decision could be labelled as a sales decision.

Doesn't mean it's a fabrication. A good hockey scout thinks we have one of the better dmen outside of the NHL, a 21/22 year old.

Good stuff.

It's fair to say it would carry more weight coming from someone outside the organization, but it's also worth noting that you don't often see prospects get that level of praise. Dorian was very high on Rundblad too so who knows although I don't recall him saying Rundblad was the best defender outside the NHL even if I'm pretty sure others did.
