Sayonara PD, been a blast.

Only 6 years too late, going all in and then deciding to full on rebuild 3 months later after trading away a 1st and Turris for a player to win right now is cause for firing.
I agree but I'm ok with blaming that more on Melnyk than Dorion.

I was more than willing to give Dorion the benefit if the doubt when he had to deal with raging alcoholic conman but he proved that it wasn't all on Melnyk, he just is a terrible, terrible GM who weakened the rebuild.

Frustrating to think that we could have had a better rebuild with someone even a little bit competent in charge.

Also I can't stand all these people comparing this the Chicago cover up. That cover up had nothing to do with the business of the NHL and there likely aren't any bylaws covering an event like that, this was a hockey thing and you can be sure there a defined rules and consequences. I get that the Chicago cover up is morally worse but this Dorion f*** up is not about morals.

Isn't the Dadonov for Holden trade one of the "great" moves Dorion's supporters have championed in the past? Rhetorical question. It was one of his few passable trades so of course they touted it as proof of Dorion's genius.

Ok so this means it's only good news every day moving forward, right?

Pierre is probably walking around the office today still in his Halloween costume hoping nobody recognizes him to get fired

Also, it was widely reported that the Sens were negotiating the punishment. Was this actually a lower punishment than was originally intended?

My guess would be that the bone the league threw to the Senators was the protection on the pick they gave up.

Because they can choose any pick between 2024 and 2026, it lowers the chance the the team will give up a high pick. While it is still early in the season, the Senators currently project to pick near the top 10.

The Senators also get a break because their cupboards are bare due to how few draft picks they accrued during the rebuild, and how many picks they burned for budget friendly veterans as they tried to force a winning team during the rebuild to save season-ticket revenue. Getting a 1st round talent sooner to contribute on an ELC has a lot of value to this team. Whoever they draft in 2026 may not be ready until 5 or 6 years from now. By then, the window with Giroux here and all the RFAs on underpriced contracts is closed.

Also, the Senators have had very few 1st or 2nd round picks over the last few years. 2021 was the last draft where the Senators had multiple picks in the top 2 or 3 rounds. The nature of the 2021 draft meant that 1st or 2nd round picks outside of the first few players taken in the first round didn't have the same value or certainty as normal 1st or 2nd round picks. Out of the previous two drafts, the Senators have only had one pick in the first two rounds (64th overall). They only had 5 picks total last year (3 in the 7th round). They already don't have their 2026 2nd, and the pick they recouped from the Debrincat trade is likely to be at the end of the 1st round as Boston projects to win the Atlantic.

The above is a long way of saying, they mismanaged their draft capitol and badly need first round picks sooner rather than later in order to inject ELC talent into their roster during their window to win. Not having to give up a 1st until 2026 is a huge consolation.

On a side note, there is still a small chance that the Senators get off easier here. Remember what happened with New Jersey? Perhaps the league needed to make a show of this for various reasons, and come 2026 when it is time to give up the pick, they will re-evaluate and allow a lesser punishment, like Ottawa dropping to the last pick of the round rather than giving up a pick entirely.

Bonehead move but NHL set the bar low with 2 mil fine for the blackhawks. How could they possibly justify a larger punishment for this compared to what happened in Chicago in 2010. NHL is such a joke of a league

So this team has now....

Lost Formenton to the WJC saga.
Lost Pinto 41 games for online betting.
Lost a 1rst rounder because PD.
Picked a dud in the top 10.
Traded 7th OA for a RFA that didn't want to be here and got back a 25-30th pick in return.

This team has been hit with a ton of bad luck, but would still be in an excellent position if it wasn't for Dorion. Imagine this team with someone other than Boucher and Korchinski right now. Dorion has affected this rebuild in a negative way and hopefully the impact won't be felt too much. There will still be an impact though, and in a league as competitive as the NHL it might be the difference between winning a cup and being a good team.

This is the end for Dorion. It sucks that it had to come to this. The reign of pure incompetence over this franchise is OVER. Melnyk and Dorion out the door. Let's clean house and never look back.

Getting the distinct feeling that it's over for Pierre Dorion.

I am going to miss Pierre Dorion so much.

This is going to be like when Steve Carrell left The Office. It's not going to be nearly as funny or entertaining.

I get that Chiarelli does wacky stuff too, but he doesn't have the same comedic timing or charm. It's just like with Ed Helms replacing Steve Carrell.
He's gold for the off-ice entertainment, but personally I'd just as soon prefer to trade that for on-ice entertainment. I want to laugh with glee at annihilating the Habs, not with impatience at watching yet another set of circumstances be mismanaged.
