Do you think our 5v5 goal differential should be bottom 5 with this roster? Do you think it should be worse than last year's, despite improvements to the team?

Do you think it should be worse than Arizona's (a team that spends 37 million on their entire roster, not including goalies)? For context, Chabot's caphit is more than AZ's entire defense.

We're a cap team with 3 top 4 dmen (not including Chychrun), a very good top 6 (even without Norris) and our GD is worse than teams that are legitimately tanking.

Do you think it's acceptable that we have
5 regulation wins against playoff teams the entire year?

What does better look like? It means actually being competitive for 40 minutes a game with this roster, not just on special teams
I actually looked in great detail into the 5V5 lack of scoring as I could not wrap my head around how a team with a very good powerplay is so bad when it comes to 5 on 5 scoring

First off, the Senators are one of the top penalized teams for and against, so in reality they play less 5 on 5 hockey then the majority of the teams...I think the Senators by average spend close a a full period on special team. Spending a lot of time on specials teams has pros and cons, biggest con being that not all players play on specials teams or play the same roles/situations and this disturbs the overall rhythm of the whole team. This could explain some of the inconsitency in play 5 on 5 and the lack of scoring 5 on 5. Its a fair theory because the lack of scoring is not due to lack of trying. The Senators ranked in the upper 1/3 of the league (at the time I checked) when it came to "high danger shot", basically chances that have a higher probabibility of being goals. As it turns out the Senators have one of the worst, maybe even the worst now, overall team shooting %.

I haven't been able to watch most games so I don't know whats really happening during the actual games to better understand.

My theory for most of the year has been that the goaltending is the biggest issue. I am aware that injuries and bad luck is something that can't really be controlled, and blaming rookie goalies thrown into the fire isn't fair either. Nonetheless goal tending is basically the problem I feel. They just suck this year, I do feel they are very capable of getting the job done but for whatever reason just cant this year

Last 6 games .... SV% 0.762 5gaa, SV% 0.879 5gaa,SV% 0.862 5gaa, SV% 0.872 5gaa,SV% 0.844 6gaa,SV% 0.862 4gaa

If with the worst defense in the league those numbers would not be acceptable 6 games in a row...even when winning the goalies slightly below league average stats...

Talbot basically got hurt just as he was starting to come around. The goalie tandem is capable of much better and when they perform as expected the team tends to wins often. The Senators haven't had to many loses where the goalies were spectacular, not to say they didn't have any good games , as I've said they are capable

Our goaltending sv% until about two weeks ago was league average. Not great, not bad enough to have 5v5 GD to be close to -30.

Doesn't matter that we are on special teams a lot. Yes that means less goals scored, but that also means less goals allowed. Our differential is what the problem is. When when we had a great record from December onwards, we actually still had a negative 5on5 GD. It's worse than Arizona's man.

Even shit teams win some games, the fact that we've played 69 games and we only have 5 regulation wins against teams in a playoff position, suggests that there is a huge problem. Our team on paper is significantly better than last year, even with Norris injury. Results size, we're worse though.

Plain and simple goealtending has been a total mess this year. The fact it was just within league average with the Senators having one of the better 20 game stretches amongst all teams indicates just how bad it was before. It was near the bottom league wide for noticeable stretches of the season.

How does a team have a PK at times within reach of being TOP 5 in the league and in the TOP 10 for majority of the season and have goalies with crap numbers ? How does a team have TOP 5 PP in the league for majority of the season and yet can't score 5 on 5 ? the lack of 5 on 5 scoring was never because of lack of chances. What stands out is the team shooting % placing near the bottom league wide. Maybe bad luck is behind it, maybe the higher expectations is something a younger team as the Senators often don't handle too well. Or maybe its just the players overthinking / squeezing their sticks too tight/ forcing mistakes from trying to hard to not make them when they play 5 on 5 because they don't know what version of the goalie will show up any given game . When is the last time a team had excellent special teams and was a gongshow 5 on 5 ?

The type of game Ferguson had tonight was long over due. Its the type of game you don't expect every night from your goalie, unless your goalie is elite, It is the type of game you expect from your goalie to stop the bleeding sort of say ,to calm things down and to provide a sense confidence . Its not fair to crap on a rookie goalie but in the context of goal-tending being the position most capable of impacting the result of a game ....what transpired in the last 6 games or so from a goal-tending aspect was a massacre...others share the blame but others aren't on the ice for every minute and others aren't out there to stop the puck...

I do feel our regular starters have it in them but like I said goaltending as a whole has been a total mess in large due to uncontrollable factors; a mess none the less. If you don't believe it well then just look at the games the Sens have won and how consistent the goaltening was in large enough number of the games...nothing to drool over but consistent.

Those 5 wins you claim are very misleading because positioning changes over the course of the season. Senators beat WSH a couple times when it was sitting pretty in a playoff position. Nov 12 Sens beat Philly 4-1 after that loss Philly was 8-5-2 and in a playoff spot. I don't understand how you can say this team its worse given what has happened. Its much better then last year and this without the teams first line center who happens to be teams top ES goal scorer the year before and with the on going goaltending circus. Just my opinion.
