To refresh the memory of the 2014 scandal in Minsk:
- Malking cross checks Haula, Haula's jaw is shattered. Should be automatic 5 min, Russia gets nothing.
- Finland leads 2-1, suddenly Finns are being called penalties from all kind of ridiculous situations. For example a Russian player trips himself and Immonen gets a penalty without touching. Russia ends up scoring 4 power play goals in the match and wins 5-2. Afterwards, the head referee of the game, Lars Brüeggemann got the most expensive contract in KHL history, probably just a coincidence.
- Russian coach Oleg Znarok was sanctioned before the match and was prohibited to attend the game. Nevertheless, everybody saw that he still led the team from the grandstand via walkie-talkie. After the game ended, he went on the ice to get his medal, which he received from Rene Fasel itself. By the book, these actions should not have been possible but nobody batted an eye.
Rene Fasel and Putin hugging after the game, the correct result was achieved. Mind you Finland had just knocked out Russia out in Sochi, which was huge embarrassement so everything was made to ensure it won't repeat. It's just not proper behaviour for IIHF president to be this biased towards the other team.
In my opinion the game was the most blatant display of corruption in a plain sight. I swore after the game I won't ever see an another match of IIHF, but alas, I like hockey too much.
