is the team not finishing first in their division for the first time in 20 years not successful?

In a 56 game schedule against only 6 other teams...?

No. I'm going to need more if I am booking Kyle Dubas as the Keynote Speaker at a Conference for "Successful Use of Analytics in Sport"

What else you got?

I love when ppl tell me that Toronto would of finished in x spot during a regular year, but also can’t tell me the players they wanna see come in and the contracts

you guys have the eye test and are better GMs. Still waiting.

Colorado and Carolina have invested a ton into analytics and they’re very good.

Maybe our issue is our players just break under pressure?

If Marner had good Corsi For % and XGF% for this series, then the stat is useless.

I think advanced stats are good for predicting who makes the playoffs.

Not sure it predicts who will be successful in the playoffs.

Playoff Analytics are different than Regular Season analytics.
I've seen you post analytics before, you may want to sit this one out.

I have yet to be convinced that analytics can be applied to hockey. In baseball you have an almost ideal set up to collect good data. Hockey is chaos.

Analytics have always been in hockey with some value. Adding more of them just makes logical sense. I definitely think there's more variability in hockey compared to something like baseball, but stepping from goals, assists, shots to shot location, scoring chances, rush chances, etc.. just seems like a natural step with technology

Im still waiting for a singular name.
Andrew Copp offersheet him 6 years and 4.2

Costs only a 2nd and he's versatile big player who can play center or wing

Would be something Dubas and most GMs don't do but is worth considering as Copp is a good target

Tatar, Schwartz, Coleman are all good targets for restoring the depth scoring that died down

If we keep the big 4 then

Hyman + 2 of Coleman/Armia/Tatar/Palmieri/Schwartz should form the middle support which we lost

Move out players who don't bring anything come playoff time like

Mikheyev, Engvall, Kerfoot(he had a good playoffs but we need more offensive minded player and he is making 3.5M) and potentially Holl (lilijgren replaces and saves us 1+M)

Dubas has the ability to shake the core if he wants by dealing marner and rielly

He can get an extended Seth Jones and a speedy winger like Robinson (Emil Robinson I think his name is from the CBJ)

He can look at selling rielly for an ELc skilled forward and a pick

Rielly for Cody Glass +2021 2nd + Nick Holden for Cap

Or

Rielly for Nils Hoglander + 2021 1st

He has pressure to win and he has seen his 50% to 4 players(whicb are never all performing at the same time in the playoffs) fail. It's time to move on from the strategy and fix the problems the team has. Add scoring depth pieces who can move up and down the lineup along with getting rid of the comfortable and entitled attitude the team has developed

Also sell me on this ... anti analytics

if the “eye test” works.. how come none of you are millionaire gamblers? You see with your eyes the talent/problems without numbers, should be making a killing gambling cause you obviously know so much. Just curious why you’re all on HF and not living lavish life’s shredding bookies.
I won a free 6-49 ticket last month.

No one wants to talk about it...even making the playoffs next year. Tampa and Boston are way ahead of us. Florida emerging, Montreal just showed what they can do against us. Ottawa a step further out of the rebuild. The metro will always be there for wild card spots.

The thing that stings the most is this was THE YEAR to make it happen.

Exactly.

This was a cakewalk to the semi finals. A pathetic Montreal team and then either the mediocre Jets or the one dimensional Oilers.

Could not have scripted an easier route.

there are teams that are good enough to get into playoffs, and then turn into playoff monsters that no one wants to face. LA Kings case in point.

Its obvious now the Leafs are built a regular season team. Someone mentioned that analytics cover the regular season, we need to have another dataset to factor playoff performances. maybe the R&D dept has proprietary playoff analytics. but its going to be very sparse because of the dearth of reliable data per player. Some players keep playing playoff games like the Hedmans the Crosbys the Palats the Orlovs. Some like Garland, Barkov, Eichel, Larkin, Severson have little data.

There are guys that are really good at the game of hockey but are just not tenacious, the dinosaurs place too much emphasis on tenacity and truculence, but they are not without merit, you need stars that have that aspect in their fabric if you are going to invest 10+ million in them.

You have to ask, is it better to have a lesser skill top 6 guy at 5.5m and another lesser physical top 6 guy at 5.4 mill, or one elite skill guy at 10.9?

Number one priority is to fire Sheldon Cuck and his buddy Dubas. Neither is capable at the NHL level. They're much better suited for hosting a radio call in show offering advice on how to build a dynasty team in NHL21 or making fantasy hockey recommendations.

Next step is to shut down the country club and get rid of guys who get stage fright and can't perform in the playoffs. That means adios to Marner and Matthews.

Think of a team that's a perennial contender and one that Toronto cannot beat in the playoffs - - Boston. Now think of who their leader is, the Leafs greatest nemesis - - Marchand. Skilled player that's tough and nasty, bordering on vicious. Closest young players to fit that type are the Tkachuk brothers.

Marner at $10.9 and Sandin at $0.9 for Matt Tkachuk RFA and Giordano at $6.7

Matthews at $11.6 and Mikheyev at $1.6 for Brady Tkachuk RFA and Stutzle at $0.9

The appeal to low budget small market teams like Calgary and Ottawa is Marner and Matthews were both heavily front loaded so the actual out of pocket expense is significantly less for a "top 5" player in the league.

Florida has a 10 million dollar anchor in net when they want to use Spencer Knight ..

Calgary was one of the biggest flops of the year and Tkachuk is tough? The one who got a puck flipped at him, did nothing, and his team mates did nothing?

:laugh::laugh:

So to fix the leafs problem, we need to trade
For players who can’t even make the playoffs in a perceived weak division.

alrighty, good talks everyone! Go leafs go

Just saw a tweet that a sports bettor turned 700k into 300 million using analytics.

Not sure if you actually watch any hockey games or if you just look at statistics, but I can assure you the Tkachuk brothers are MUCH tougher and aggressive than Marner and Matthews could ever dream of.
