GDT: Second Round of the 2025 Playoffs

Fun fact. Marian Hossa had more goals in the two playoff runs prior to joining the Hawks, than Mitch Marner has in his entire career. In 25 less games.

Hossa with Pens and Wangs: 43GP 18G 23A 41P +13

Marner has 13G in 67 career playoff games....

Sure.

Marner is a playmaker why are you focusing on goals to trash him?

Marner is nearly a PPG player in playoffs, Coming into tonight

67 Playoff games
13 goals
49 assists
62 pts
+12

Honestly I’m out on marner at this point. Dude has been a ghost since this series shifted to Florida. 2 SOG in the last 3 games and hasn’t made much of an impact at all. The third goal tonight was entirely his fault with a blind backhand pass up the middle and a weak back check. He’s not the guy you want being the highest paid player on a team with a bunch of kids.

I think KD values competitiveness a lot so i dont
see him being the one to bite.

Marner had two assists in game 3, Totally a ghost!

If KD values competitiveness care to explain the Bertuzzi contract? Far from guy one would describe for his "Competitiveness" as he vanishes thru half the games of season (If not more) and was dreadful for Leafs in playoffs

Will their contracts be comparable ?

Matgews and Marner both go no show tonight...bad..both akso do turnoversvleadibg ti FLA scores..typical Leafs foldo from the top Leafs stars of regular season in in playoffs..
.
You want to pay high $$$ to Marner for this playoff folderama stuff and LOSER no show in crunch games we see again and again and again???

You want to waste $16mil per on this inevitable same old story pkayoff fadeout ???

LET another SUCKER team pursue him
..never going to win a Cup for any team.

The SC playoffs are a different game than regukar season...sone can cut it in ramped up physicality and intensity...others cannot cut it.. We know how this always goes inevitably for the same old Leafian ^heroes" ..failure and once they ride to the Golf Course, again you are Certain the teardown chants in Toronto and "Re-Build" are not very far off.

He's supposedly a star player. They need to score goals too. The biggest problem is that Marner goes from being a 30G scorer in the regular season, to a 15G scorer in the playoffs. Here are the playoff stats for another "playmaker":

143G 53G 85A 138P

.37 goals per game. Basically double Marner's goal scoring pace, and almost identical to his regular season production.

Joe Thornton is a great comparable to Marner, and his inability to score goals was a huge problem for those Sharks teams come playoff time. You don't win in the playoffs with guys like that, because teams gameplan around you, and just dare you to shoot and beat them. You certainly don't make players like that a cornerstone of your rebuilding team....

Now do the clutch games, or lack there of. He's been a ghost all series, and is actively hurting his team.
Games 4, 5, and 6 of the Ottawa series: 0G 2A -4.

Games 4 and 5 of Florida series: 0G 0A -2

Games 5, 6, and 7 vs. Boston: 0G 1A even

He also had 1G 2A and was -2 in the five games two seasons ago against Florida. I didn't bother going any further back.

Not sure what the Knights future holds but damn they looked slow in the series, felt like a step behind for the majority of the series.

The comparable for Marner is Hossa. Wing. Selke votes. Fringe star. Their playstyles aren’t the same but the results are. And before you laugh at that, might wanna check Hossa’s playoff production…

If you really wanna question your Blackhawk reality go look at Patrick Sharp’s playoff stats.

Except Marner isn't near the defensive player Hossa was, not even close. Not to mention, a lot less goals were scored in Hossas era than in Marners. Hossa also didn't play with the best regular season goal scorer in the NHL. AND Hossa wasn't brought in to be 'the guy' we had 2 other players who were our stars and Hossa complimented them very well.

Adjust their scoring for era and check.

Your argument is going to be that Marner has better teammates than Hossa on the Alfredsson Sens, Crosby Penguins, Datsyuk Red Wings and Dynasty Blackhawks?

Marner wouldn’t be brought in to be “the guy”. Bedard and draft pick 3 are the guys. Marner would just be a little earlier in the timeline.

I dont know where that information is kept, but the last few years have been the highest scoring years in the NHL since the mid 90s or something like that.

Marner plays with the highest goal scorer of this generation. Please tell me when Hossa did that.

Marner wouldn't be brought in to be the guy, but would be making around 14mil/season? lol Hossa made how much on his AAV percentage wise?

All this talk about Marner but to me Matthews is even more of an issue than Marner is. Like it's not even close.
Matthews hasn’t been healthy all year. Think he’s been having major problems with his wrists too because it’s painfully obvious that he can’t really shoot the puck right now.

Marner on the other hand as been healthy. He was great the first few games against Ottawa but when they needed him he went back into his shell again

Serious question: How does a professional sports team get their players to elevate their game in the playoffs? Seems like a lack of prep work on their part. Do they need to get the players to play "playoff hockey" all year instead of feasting on high scoring games during the regular season?

It’s weird that there’s speculation that Matthews has an injured wrist that is effecting his shooting yet is still taking faceoffs. Not only is he still taking faceoffs, but he has taken the most in his career this season and is winning them at his highest %.

I get it’s possible that his supposed wrist injury effects his shooting and not his draws but it’s odd to me.
