Player I'm starting to fall in love with is Cooper DeJean. If the pick isn't WR, OL, or DL, he's pretty much the only player that interests me with our top pick.
-Experience at CB, S, and NB, though he's mostly played CB recently
-Special teams ace as both a returner and gunner
-True playmaker, with 13 PD, 7 INTs, and 3 defensive touchdowns in 23 starts.

I envision him as do everything secondary player that we would primarily deploy at S, though could also pick up NB responsibilities too, which would both take pressure off of Johnson and also make Johnson's deployment more versatile. By all means I think he could be a very good CB in the NFL, but I think he could be a truly special player art S/NB. A playmaker in the middle of the field, he's exactly what our defense needs long term.
The two defensive players rated mid-1st who I really like are DeJean and Jared Verse.

I'll take a franchise QB that makes plays late over a franchise QB that screws the pooch late.

:dunno:
I'll take a (franchise) QB and team which puts the backup in for the last 10 minutes of every game because they have a 3-score lead and game in hand vs. the QB and team who needs late-game heroics but gets them more of the time than other teams/QBs.

Not knocking Allen, just thinking the graph, devoid of deeper thought / context, endorses a "white knight hero" over an overwhelming obliterating force of destruction by the rest of the roundtable.

I think everyone would take a more complete team. But, that was not what that post was about.

The context was the talk that Allen is not a clutch player. But, like has been mentioned before, Allen and the offense tends to come through in the clutch waaaaay more than the defense does.

I think it's an indictment of the coaches and I bet that chart (and trend of disappointing results) looks similar for lots of important games. I used to think we were tinkering and getting the right pieces/flow in place. Now I just see a lot of prime Allen being wasted, and not because of this chart. The shadow of a doubt has been there since 13 seconds but really took hold after the Dolphins playoff game last year.

My draft thoughts for the 1st round are:

Stay in place and take Verse or DeJean

Trade down (add a 3rd) and take Patrick Paul.

All will change as the process continues but that's what I'm thinking today.

Lets see, in the Jets, New England, Denver, Philadelphia, and Giants games he has driven down the field and tied or taken the lead inside of two minutes.

And he's 1-4 in those games.

Given, some of those games they were in that position due to his mistakes (Jets, New England), some were blind luck (Denver getting the stupidest catch you'll ever see a a 4th and 2 from the 7), and the Eagles was because of a mix of the single mistake allen made and blind luck and the refs.

Josh Allen has been up and down this season.

But when games have been on the line he's been undoubtedly clutch.

He really is this generations Favre. He will make some bad plays but he'll also will you to wins.

Let's just hope he's smart enough not to send lewd pictures to beat reporters and/or defraud poor people of his home state.

The league is designed to make the games close, so unless you’ve really got an all-world roster throughout, you’ll need a guy who plays well when it’s tight late

Yup, same here. Verse is a game-breaking level player who might fall because he's a little older. Probably could've come out last year and been a top 10 pick.
My 4 1st round targets:

Jordan Morgan, OT Arizona. Not a physical freak but a solid athlete. Technician with a mean streak. Smart, knows where to be and what to do. Knee injury from last season needs to be checked out.

Patrick Paul, OT Houston. Pure left tackle and a good athlete. Smart, aware in space, shows good feet. Rarely gets beat for sacks. He's going to end up going a lot higher than where he's currently rated by most online scouting services.

Jared Verse, DE Florida State. 4th year junior who stayed an extra year. Explosive and strong, he's going to test really well at the combine. He's not a workout warrior. Displays a lot of rush moves and counters to blocking. Great hands. High motor. Everything you'd want in a top tier DE.

Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa. Big defensive back who primarily lines up on the outside for Iowa. His NFL home will be as an inside corner / hybrid safety, or at safety outright. Amazing body control and great hand usage. Tackles well. Off the charts IQ and instincts. Tracks the ball well. Prototype interior defensive back.

Don't let Hyde & Epenesa see that you called an Iowa Hawkeye a Buckeye.

I also have 4 "targets:"
(1) Dejean for all the reasons you said

(2) Verse for all the reasons you said (I'd also be fine with another DE but super high end potential, but Verse is the one I see with a chance of being there)

(3) WR Nabers, Odunze, or Coleman: I'm much less interested in WR if one of the big 3 second tier guys doesn't fall. I'm only taking a WR1 in the first if I see a long term Diggs replacement.

(4) OT if it's someone they think can be a franchise LT. Morgan and Paul strike me as more back end of the round guys, and I think we will be picking higher unless we go on a heater. Mims is my favorite idea. Could've been a top 5 pick, but will fall due to missing a lot of time with injury.

I'd rather take my chances on a WR in round 2-3. But we're the same otherwise.
