Nope. It's still a dumb take.
You watch Flames games since 2018? Doesn't seem like it

Awful take. Sure injuries could be a problem but that applies to any player. Monahan is comfortably a solid second line player worst case 3rd line. Your bias against him and hard ons for Johnny are ridiculous.

Comfortable 2nd liner? Maybe on Arizona lol. He is comfortably in our bottom-6 and is producing similarly to Trevor Lewis and Brad Richardson 5v5. Lucic has outproduced him consistently at 5v5 for two years now and Lucic is a meh bottom-6W himself. Maybe Monahan can be a placeholder 2C but he's best suited as a 3C/@, and a mediocre highly overpaid one at that.

All the Flames fans that are like 'Monahan has changed his game and is now a solid two-way 3C'... You realize we literally have a younger, faster version in Dillon Dube ready to take over at 1/3 of the price. And the cost savings could be used to improve our scoring (which is what Monahan is paid to do but hasn't in 3 years).

I'm not saying he's a completely useless player cause he does have value on the PP, he's just way overpaid and that drags his value down a ton. I would be over the moon if we could get a 2nd back for him straight up. The thing is we legit can't take cap back past this year because we already are gonna be in cap trouble, and I'd WAY rather move Monahan for a pick then have to attach a pick to Lucic to move him when in reality they have very similar value. Or ideally we can move them both and clear 12 mil out of our bottom-6

I hope you are too. I mostly agree with your opinion on him, but he's a fantastic human and a great team guy. The fan in me really hopes he bounces back to a 2nd line level. I know it's unlikely at this point, but some other guys with bad boots and good mitts have had long and productive careers.

Andreychuk, Ciccarelli, Smyth ect. Monahan needs to move his game a little lower in the O zone like those guys did. He HAS gotten better defensively, but I'm hoping for 20 goals not a slower Brad Richardson.

I completely agree, he is a great teammate and seems like a great person all around and I really hope he can adapt. I just think the league isn't like it was back then when you could mask the lack of speed, especially in Darryl's system when you have to be skating and checking non-stop. Hope I'm wrong though, I could see him finding a role that suits him for a year or two but not much past that. At 1-2 mil though he'd be totally passable

Rasmus Andersson come on down! Matthew Tkachuk I’d dream of but that’s not happening.

Miller-Andersson basis?
I get the desire for a blue liner. The Canucks have a good forward group. I was thinking something smaller. We don't really have a top 4 guy to spare. Something like Monahan for Pearson and an expiring cap dump.

Or Monahan, Valimaki and a 1st for Miller or Boeser if it was bigger. Valimaki is a bit rough in his own end, but definitely has upside and can initiate a breakout which is something you guys desperately need.

How much has Monahan fallen off? Last couple times I saw him he didn’t do much..what’s going on there? Is he just too slow?

He's fallen off offensively a ton. He was never a guy who could carry a line even at his best. He was a finisher who had enough skill that he could string plays together that a Gaudreau type created.

He is better defensively now than he was before. I'd say he's a 4 or 5 out of 10 where before he was a 3 or 4. I don't think he'll ever score 30 again. 20 is a possibility if he plays with a skilled driver.

He's slow yes, but he's always been slow. Tkachuk is far slower than Monahan and is effective. I think Monahan needs to change his game without Gaudreau. Needs to go lower in the O Zone and play a smoother version of Ryan Smyth hockey. That guy couldn't skate at all, couldn't shoot and didn't have any finesse to his game and managed a productive career.

I actually think his skating and all around game are much better than they've been in a long time. And his production on the PP shows his hands are still there.

I think what we're seeing is less of a fall off and more of just the reality of the type of player Monahan has always been when he's not playing with an elite play driving winger. He's never been a very good defensive player, and has never been an effective offensive player without Gaudreau (his career 5v5 p/60 without Gaudreau has always been ~1.4). People like to point out his rookie year without Gaudreau as evidence to the contrary, but he only had 35 points, and while his 22 goals is great, his ixG that year was only 13 and his 5v5 P/60 was 1.47. So his rookie season really isn't very solid evidence against his reliance on Gaudreau.

I do think he's been a bit snake bitten at 5v5, but he's really not generating very much. Without a play driving winger, he's essentially a 4C who is a defensive liability, and unfortunately Calgary doesn't really have enough wingers of that caliber to play one on their 3rd line.

A team with a "surplus" of play driving wingers could probably use him as a middle 6 goal scoring center. Maybe like Ottawa, Seattle, Vegas, or Minnesota?

25 year old cost controlled dmen with top pairing potential do not get moved frequently. Unless Pettersson is involved forget about it.

Has he/could he play LW?

He seems like the exact type of player Pierre Dorion would trade a 2nd for. "We really liked him when he played for the 67s" he'll say, as Sens fans pick different teams to cheer for...

He's more of a center, if Ottawa were to acquire him it would probably be to shelter Pinto for the year and have a chance to win relevant faceoffs

Send him to Anaheim at draft… we don’t even need to send cap back…. Just give us a asset if fair value for taking him

Wow this thread did not age well.....
Many, many threads don't. Players don't live up to their full potential, yet fans were 100% sure they would.

Every deadline we can see guys traded that 18 or 30 months earlier were untradable, that just needed a coach to give them ice time.
