That was a moment, where I was like... what the f*** is this guy? He's like 3-4 inches taller, 15-20 pounds heavier and got slapped around by Nuge. Nuge. Like, not Kassian, not one of the other gorillas they employ in Edmonton. Nuge.

That might have been the most confusing fight I have ever seen, literally "Nuge is fighting MONAHAN, what in the f***"

I think Monahan was surprised by how hard Nuge came at him, he can be a spicy little guy.

I maintain that he is one of the more attractive bounce back/buy low candidates in the league. He is only 27 years old, is coming off major surgery this past off-season, and has been stapled to a bottom six role under Sutter. His most common line mates by a longshot are Milan Lucic, Trevor Lewis, and Dillon Dube. His analytics away from those first two mentioned are also quite strong, and he has still shown the ability to produce on the PP.

Have to imagine the tune from Flames fans on the first page has changed a bit by now lol

What would Calgary add to dump him for Byron @2/3 his contract?

Nada.
His buyout is cheap; we aren't adding assets or taking contracts back.

It is cheaper than I thought I'll admit but I figured they'd still be looking to fill some roster spots with a few forwards headed out the door, Byron still a solid player that can play up and down the lineup and just has the one year left

The Flames have a bunch of near league minimum prospects that will be ready for full time roles. Makes far more sense to move up Ruzicka, Pelletier, or Valimaki than to take on any overpaid vets.

A realistic trade proposal might be:

Monahan ($1.5 million retained) for future considerations.
As others have said, who would take on that much salary for an underperforming veteran ?
Also, every team has kids ready to fill some roster slots, but as a general rule, GMs aren't as willing as fans to give depth roles to kids.

I expect something like Monahan for Drouin, and both fanbases will hate the proposal and the trade.

The buyout for Drouin is slightly better. So could see that. Acquiring Drouin, for anything but a buyout, makes zero sense. The Flames actually need cap.

We have Ruzicka who needs a spot next year; and likely Jakob Pelletier who needs a spot as well.
No need to take a contract back when we have ELC's we can plug and play with a bought and paid for top 9 as we have.

Everybody needs cap. But buyouts, including another warm body to fill the roster, rarely free up that much cap space.

With Drouin Calgary saves a bit under 1M$. They probably have better options though, but as a Habs fan I'd consider it if only because I want Drouin to get a fresh start elsewhere. Montréal is a toxic environnement for him. Him playing behind Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm... would do wonder I think. He could become a solid middle six guy for you, which you could re-sign at around 3M$ maybe?

Buying out Monahan and then putting in a guy at near league minimum saves over $3 million in cap for next year. The Flames have multiple players knocking on the door for a bottom six role.

No way to fit Drouin in under the cap. The only reason to bring him in, would be for a buyout.

Frank Seravalli thinks the Flames can easily find a home for Monahan for what it is worth.

Has he/could he play LW?

He seems like the exact type of player Pierre Dorion would trade a 2nd for. "We really liked him when he played for the 67s" he'll say, as Sens fans pick different teams to cheer for...

Yes he can LW.

That being said, the risk of trading a 2nd for Monahan is probably akin to the risk we took trading a second for Lazar (Formenton).

I think Ottawa offering a 2nd for Monahan is overpay, so I'd take it and run if it were on the table.

While he has dropped in play, I could see a team not near the cap trading a player with similar term and less value. Something like:

New Jersey: Johnsson
Arizona: Ritchie
San Jose: Bonino
Seattle: Donskoi

Those teams would then hope he improves his value and then deal him off at the deadline. Flames get cap relief to sign their free agents and add more bodies to the blueline.

Now if Calgary is looking for legit value back without retention, that will be harder to do.

Wonder if there could be a Sean Monahan to Seattle trade that's possible.

Monahan for a cheap contract. But also think Seattle is the only team for Dadonov's contract that he'll accept a trade to.

Well no one is giving you #1 centre for free. Monahan only has 1 year left on his contract. He's relatively low risk. If he plays okay, you may even be able to flip him for a 2nd at the deadline.
I get that. I just don't think the Habs are a good fit and that we should spend any significant assets for him. Mauve if we were not at the early stage of a rebuild he would be more interesting.

Calgary is looking for cap space so they wont take on anyone that cost more than buying him out

An even swap might work. As that would make the Byron buyout less than the Monahan one.

Monahan is still a legit NHLer. He's been pushed out of the lineup by the Flames depth and acquiring Toffoli. He's not well suited for a bottom six role.

Byron has been on and off waivers and cannot stay healthy.
