Every prospect can decide not to sign and become UFA/go back to the draft.
I think Russian players are an exception, if you draft someone out of Russia then you hold their NHL rights indefinitely until they sign with you.

Annoying to see these NCAA players able to burn the first year of their ELCs. Ideally he would have started in the AHL. Now the team will have to send back to Laval somebody else that worked hard the whole year.
There's no roster limit size after the trade deadline, so nobody has to be sent to Laval to make room. Though of course for the new guy to get NHL games a player has to be scratched.

It will be interesting to see how he handles himself in the big league, if he can hold his own and not look out of place thats already a win. I have my doubts, but as long as they dont scratch kids like Ylonen, RHP, Im fine, we have nothing to lose anyway so he will have his chances.

The only difference is that NCAA player can't have a pro contract while they play there.
It's time to change that given they are able to make some money now are they not?

I doubt it changes as hockey is the only sport I can think of someone being drafted and still play in the NCAA and that team still holds their rights. In basketball and football they turn pro after drafted and in baseball they can be drafted out of high school but if they don't sign they go back in the draft after their junior season or when they turn 21 whichever occurs first.

It will be curious what they do with Mesar. Because in Beck's case, it's either NHL or Junior. But they don't have that limitation with Mesar. He's eligible for Laval.
Mesar himself was saying 2 years, one in junior and one in AHL. Not sure if he was revealing the plan he was told or that was his hope.

Looking out of place because they are a bit star struck/feeling the pressure of being in the show and not being able to insantly adjust to the increased speed isn't really a problem so long as they also show flashes of their own. Even Caufield looked a little overwhelmed in his first few NHL games, he bobbled the puck quite a bit, missed one timers, etc... but every game he also flashed what makes him such a special player.

He still needs to prove what he can do at the pro level. The team is now in a position to bring young players up when they are really ready. That's why keeping Slaf this season was such a bad decision. A player should force management to give hinm a roster spot.

That's the way it goes
He's a bigger piece of the puzzle -- some of the others are not in n the picture for the future

I wonder what linemates we'll see him with.
Gurianov seems like a logical pick, a big shooter to go alongside the small playmaker.

Yeah, it wouldnt be a big deal if he struggled a bit at first, Im only saying that if he can have some good showings till the end of the season, that would bode well for him. If he looks out of place, then AHL is probably where he plays next year.

My question is where does a 5 ft 9 ,175 lb C /W gonna fit in the Habs future lineup?

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Farrell - Dach - Gurianov
RHP - _____ _ Anderson
Heineman - Evans - Ylonen

Then we see what we add to this with trades, free agency, other current prospects panning out, and the upcoming drafts.

It's not that size isn't important, but until we're trying to compete for the cup the size composition really doesn't matter.

If we end up with too many quality NHLers who are small you make trades.

Farrell is promising and that's what I'm more excited about. He's got years to prove to management that he can fill a role on this team.
