Meh. I get that Kakko wasn't who we all hoped for, and his value may have been as shitty as this trade suggests, but for a second overall pick that we desperately, desperately needed to pan out to end as unceremoniously as this — it just feels like yet another dagger. Borgen might be a fine enough player for us, but a pending UFA for someone who was speculated to be a central piece in, e.g., an Eichel trade, it just feels horribly brutal even if this is Kakko's actual value. It's funny that, throughout his entire tenure here, this team's go-to move when they need a jolt is to martyr Kakko.

I'm probably still going to watch the games because I don't have a life, but I'm kinda just over this team for a while.

This trade comes off as petty, weak and desperate. It does nothing for the Rangers apart from making it look like Drury is doing something to scare the room with and Lavi gets a player who talked back to him out of his face.

Pathetic, erratic trade but totally on par what we've seen and expect from Drury. Also, I dont believe for a second the lipstick they had Weekes paint on this pig of a trade, or the lipstick they gave the beat writers about targeting Borgen. They said the same thing about Blais too...

Drury lost his temper again and traded Kakko to a backwater (rather than a team such as the Wild) where he isnt likely to come back to bite him in the ass right away. Even a prospect from the Wild's deep pool, like GoAwayPanarin was talking about, would have been better than this.

But, Borgen does fit into Lavi's 101 Dino Template of what an NHL defense looks like, so there's that if someone finds that encouraging.

Just since KK is being mentioned..

Artturi Lehkonen went at the deadline a couple years ago to Colorado. He was a third liner. He's rounded himself into a solid top 6 player over there. That's kind of what I'd envision happening to Kakko. Lehkonen was traded for a 2nd round pick and a solid prospect at the time.

That's what I'd be looking to return. If they chose to move on from KK at least wait until the deadline so you can squeeze out some value. Don't make a stupid reactionary trade here and lose the deal. At this point I really don't know if I trust Drury to get good value though.

It's insane. I just posted this earlier in the day. Just hours later and Drury completely shits the bed. Tampa traded a first for Goodrow. Colorado paid for Lehkonen. Kakko is a 23 year old RFA. Teams love those sorts of 2way players at the deadline. Make the other team pay. It's just a brain dead move at this time. Completely unnecessary, unforced. I hardly ever venture to the main boards. I'm not one to follow a crowd, but it's hilarious that everyone pretty much unanimously thinks Drury is an idiot

Seems weird to compare him to top 10 picks...
Only one guy in the 12-20 bracket has really solidified himself as an NHLer at this point (Sillinger) with Cornato (not available to us) and Bolduc (pick after Othmann) maybe on the way.
Othmann may amount to nothing, but he was picked basically exactly where he was predicted to go and IMO it's far too early to make the call on him

trading a depth forward does not mean officially selling. Presumably trading Kreider/ZBad/similar important player means we're selling.

Kakko did nothing for his value around the league other than show himself to be a depth player.

Will he recoup that value and then become more valuable? Likely, but as of this time, it's clear he wasn't well valued.

Should be a line we are watching for years. Instead Lavi breaks it up for zero discernible reason and then Drury trades Kakko for a bag of dust.

Two things particularly annoy me about this trade.

1- Kakko was 100% traded now because of his comments. I've seen a few people point out that his comments were critical of Lav (which they were), but they were more critical of Zib/Kreider (the guys who, per Kakko, were more deserving of the pressbox). Immediately trading a player who dared to call out the crap play of our "stars" only serves to further placate those "stars." I'm pissed because it's basically management's way of taking a shot across the bow of any player who would dare to hurt the feelings of the bromantic duo. Not only is this protecting the duo, but it also shows that the team CAN take action when they want to address a problem--they just refuse to do so with the biggest problems on the roster. The entree is rotten and these f***ers are rearranging the damn parsley.

2- I was livid when I saw that the team had been after Borgen for years. This is exactly like the Buchnevich trade, and it demonstrates that Drury has learned nothing from his biggest mistake (there were also reports that the team had coveted Blais for years). The problem isn't so much that they felt they had to move Buch or Kakko. They had a logical reason with the former and the latter was kind of holding their feet to the fire. It's that Drury has no concept of value. It's like buying a $10k engagement ring, having the girl say no, and then thinking, "you know, I've been wanting to buy a new $400 television for years. I'll trade this ring for the TV since I don't have immediate plans for it anymore!" Kakko entered Drury's trade pool, and his response was to spend that currency immediately rather than playing it out to maximize value. And this is the second time he did it. Drury is a dumb motherf***er.

Fire Drury. Fire Lav. Let the replacements trade Kreider and Lindgren.

Your point number 1 doesn't seem to be true since they were working on this deal over the weekend and may have been the reason he was scratched.
