So are Rangers gonna re-sign Borgen before he gets to UFA? Their cap situation blows and at 20-20-3, I'm admittedly not high on their cup chances this season.
Depends on his deadline value. I think they have around 8 mil in cap space and if he's only getting a 2nd or worse and will take like 3 x 3.5 i think they'd be wise to resign him. After a few games of adjustment he's been good. Granted it's a small sample size. If by some miracle some GM offers a 1st then trade him and talk to him July 1st.

No?

The Rangers will have $23,000,000 in cap space at the deadline. The projected increase to the cap will cover everyone's raises.

Panarin expires after next year and Kreider expires the following year. They just got rid of Trouba's entire contract.

What they decide to do with it is always scary but the Rangers have frankly, plenty of cap space.

All Kakko needed was to go to a place with weather as depressing as Finland.

Seriously though I like Kakko and hope he becomes a real stud. He showed flashes but never took that next step in NY. The reasons for that will be up for debate.

Not seeing it. Whom they have signed for how long and for what value and then what they still need to re-sign/replace to stay at functionally the same level. You state panarin expiring as a positive but forget they need to replace the impact.

We're probably rebuilding. We're definitely retooling. Whatever you want to call it. Signing Borgen or not is immaterial.

As others have said, if the value is there at the deadline, you trade him. If you sign him, he's a solid depth piece and he's not ruining a couple of years of tanking if that's what they decide to do.

Who doesn't have the cap space to sign Will Borgen? What even is this?

I'm not trolling, those are clear and undisputed facts in case of Kakko, who this thread is about. I don't care about what the rangers and do and cannot do. Excuses hardly matter.

“(my) 2nd overall turned to Ash. Copium.”

“Clear and undisputed facts.”

Have a great day.

Not caring one bit about Kakko and feeling offended he's doing better seem to go hand in hand.

Stay as a bust gosh darnit!

Yes, clearly stating I hope he turns it around and has a successful career no less than 4 times in this thread clearly screams being “offended he’s doing better.”

I’ll say it once more: I don’t care about Kakko in Seattle, and hope he does well. I don’t root against kids and for them to fail for playing a game because of the sweater they put on. He was JAG in NY, and I’ll reserve judgement on whether or not he’s actually a player after more than 10 games after his “wake up” trade. He wouldn’t be the first to turn around a middling or worse career after a trade, nor will he be the last to flame out entirely if he doesn’t.

The issue I take is blaming the Rangers for what are clearly false takes about being a horrible drafting and development team.

Rags got a 37y Blake Wheeler to play Kaapos spot. Great move to downplay your own prospects ice-time and confiddnce

I'm not trying to say this "10 games" proves anything about Kakko but I do think players like him and Zac Jones are probably starting to think this "crazy" thought that there is something inherently wrong with an organization whose team is falling off a cliff, firing long time training staff, leaking info about their captain blocking a trade, sending a memo naming players by name that you want to trade, scratching "JAGs" while one of in not the worst +/- players in the league has no real consequences, ect...

Borgen is a 3rd pairing defenseman so i guess?
We essentially traded a middle six winger for a 4/5 defenseman. Seems like both teams are happy with the player they got back.

Kakko has more years of team control, while the 3rd and 5th going back might equalize that.

I know everyone in this thread is only talking about Kakko, and I'd even say that there's more upside in the trade for Seattle. But I don't think this is as lopsided of a trade as people initially claimed (myself included).
