It's pretty crazy this guy got traded twice within the last three or four years for basically nothing and now is suddenly a 2nd pairing guy worth nearly 4.6 for five years.

Like this is basically the Mike Matheson contract eh?

thank expansion over the years and a watered down talent pool.

It took a long time for Oleksiak to establish himself as a regular and even a couple years ago he was just a 3rd pairing defenseman. Heck, in 19-20 season his TOI/GP ended up at less than 16 minutes on the season. Then the bubble playoffs came, he played probably the best hockey he's ever played alongside Miro Heiskanen and was paired with him for this past season as well.

And now he suddenly gets a 5 year deal at 4.6M per.

This is honestly super risky. For all i know, he could revert back to being a 3rd pairing defenseman.

Can’t believe I’m the only one who’s not surprised he got that much . Was expecting stars to resign him at around 4 . He makes shutting guys down look easy . The guys stick is like 20 ft long . He will be effective for along time just with his size alone .

Why take on other teams bad contracts and cap mistakes as a clean slate expansion team, when you can make your own fresh new ones right from scratch???

But seriously...they went through the whole expansion draft, apparently pursuing a strategy of "cheaper is better than better". A "cap space > roster capability" sort of mentality. Which is at least easy to understand, conceptually. There's a grain of truth to that notion. But to then go ahead and just dynamite that sort of plan to smithereens with a contract for a #4/5 fringe guy like Oleksiak at nearly $5M long-term...Idgi. Very strange, the apparent lines they've drawn in where to penny pinch and save cap space...and who/what to splurge on.

In any case...Zadorov and his agent must be grinning looking at this. Certainly seems like something to give them a bit of ammunition in gunning for what prior to this, sounded like a kind of absurd "ask" for a very similar player.

Crazy how when you prioritize signing someone big rather than someone good you might end up with a pretty not good player.

I have watched a few of their games and he hasn't been close to as terrible as people are claiming here.
