Confirmed with Link: Scott Arniel named Winnipeg Jets head coach

So far, the only thing I've taken from this presser: Scott has a plan for each and every player, and that they weren't looking to reinvent the wheel. He's said he's learned from the Columbus days, which is good. I'm trying not to be negative. Good that they're addressing the special teams. Didn't really like his answer to analytics, though. Looks more like feel-based coaching instead of data-driven.

"Try harder." is the overarching message I'm taking.

Arniel: The kids have to be ready and prove that they're ready to be NHL players.

Cheveldayoff: Sometimes the best decisions (coaching search) come from within.

Arniel addressing the "5-10% better" metric, pushing it mostly towards the players driving themselves, and the leadership group taking the reins.

Brad Lauer is gone! Yes! We get squeaky clean new special teams coaching now.
I also picked up on the 5/10% better comment and was relieved to hear it was more about players pushing themselves vs just getting "better"
I'd think this will be a priority for the coaching staff to monitor and react if the players / leaders struggle with self motivation.

I envy the people who are genuinely excited by this announcement. I wish I could feel your buzz. I'm not upset about it, just more... "meh" I guess is the right word.

That said, I think getting rid of Lauer is addition by subtraction.

Wish I could bump the Rick Bowness thread... there was a very real Brad Lauer love-in after 2023 season - he ran an efficient power play and was the answer to our scoring woes haha

There's some pushback to the "10%" and the "try harder" but people don't realize that that's what the margin is for success in the NHL

I'll compare it to running... imagine these three scenarios for a trained, experienced runner:

Scenario 1: runner goes out for a nice light jog to enjoy the day. Doesn't time themselves or track heartbeat. Just a quick run for fun

Scenario 2: Race day. Runner has put in the training and time and is looking to set a new personal best

Scenario 3: runner is being chased by a guy with a knife

You can see that the exertion levels put forth by this runner won't be the same in all three scenarios. The runner's ability or fitness level won't change over the course of the three, but his intensity will

When it comes to the NHL, Scenario 1 is the preseason, Scenario 2 is the regular season and Scenario 3 is the playoffs

The Jets showed up for game one ready for "race day" and the Avs had their knives out

No amount of line up shuffling or line combos will make a difference until the team learns that distinction.

I think it's both myself. The Jets did not raise the level of their play and compete to match the Avs that's for sure. And they looked nothing like how the teams currently in the remaining 4 look either in terms of intensity.

But maybe we can say in addition to working much harder, there are advantages (however small) that can be gained by doing things smarter.

A related example comes from Andre Agassi. He had lost to Boris Becker his first 3 times but then spent a ton of time watching tape on Becker's serve. He found that he could tell where Becker would serve depending on where his tongue was in his mouth. That would become a huge advantage and help Agassi win 9 times in their next 11 games.
I'm sure Agassi continued to keep training as hard as he could during that time as well. But just playing harder alone wouldn't have helped him as much as playing harder and playing smarter did.

The guy standing beside him with the glasses is how I imagine a Statsnerd who makes up line combos based on spreadsheets but has never played the game at a high level would look like lol

so it seems like we will know who our assistants will be very soon since he wants to get it done before other teams makes offers on some of the potential guys

The more I’ve been mulling it over and watching the press conference, the more this just feels like the Claude Noel hire. One of “our boys” that’s been here with the moose and the org before.

It felt like we were on the right track with bringing in major league name brand coaches in Maurice and Bowness (and pursuing Trotz), but we seem to have reverted back to organizational comfortability in another mediocre hire because “he’s been with us”.

I try hard not to be negative, but you have to have team buy in to change anything. I’ll believe that our pp will improve when I see it on a consistent basis.
If they sign Monahan and Vilardi is healthy that's a huge step... I'd really like to see Samberg get a shot on PP1 and pair Jomo-Heinola on PP2

Just wait until he hires Laurie Mustard as our PK coach...

So maybe Mike Keane will be hired as an assistant so if it doesn't workout with Arniel, then at least they have their loyalty guy to hire next haha jk, I really do hope they hire some good assistants though. Be nice to have both the PP and PK in the top 15.

Agree that this was always the plan and I'm willing to give him a try as HC. It will be a seamless transition, systems-wise and he appears to have a good relationship with the players. Here is how he differs from Bones, IMO:
1) He is 61, but a young 61 and will hopefully have much more resiliency over a long season, in every sense of the word
2) My contact with him has been fairly limited, but my impression is that he listens and assimilates new ideas well. Maybe this is personality, maybe it's all his years as an assistant, or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. The point is that no coach has all the answers and it is essential for any successful HC to be open to new ideas. I don't think his predecessor did that very well.
3) Relatedly, he needs to surround himself with a new coaching team, at the very least replacing Lauer. I would also love to see him have a more established and respected analytics advisor. (*Please ignore this last comment if you vehemently disagree, rather than turning it into another petty fight)
Just listened to the interview and was very pleased. Apologies for quoting myself, but I wanted to expand on the points I made.
1) Definitely appeared to be a young 61 year old, mostly in good ways. Aside from being in robust physical health, he presented himself as someone who has grown since his Columbus experience and is continuing to learn the game. Interestingly, he may have been much more of a gruff know-it-all when he started than he is now. Bob Dylan wrote the famous lyrics, "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now". That perfectly describes what I am seeing.

2) He is very honest about his past, has spent that last 12 years learning to be better, and is open to young assistant coaches and new ideas. This is not a lifer who is resting on his laurels.
3) He fired Lauer and is looking for new blood. I think some here may be pleasantly surprised at who he attracts.
His comments about analytics were refreshing, if not surprising. The Jets have taken a very pedestrian approach to this for the past few years but Scott recognizes that they are a real and growing part of the game. Hallelujah!

Honestly, I am happier with the state of the team after this interview than I have been since well before the playoffs, when I had a real sense of despair about their unwillingness to adapt and change.

I’m not sure what Samberg offers over JoMo on the PP. I don’t see replacing JoMo on unit 1. Maybe a shot on unit 2 but I see Samberg as more of defensive & shot blocking type.

Wonder if James Wright has started coaching yet.

Ya Arniel sucks , jesus give the guy at least a game first before saying that we need a new coach. Maybe he's going to do all the things that you want him to and then we will absolutely win the Cup .

Dude, the Jets could have hired Crusty the Clown and you would say "give the guy a chance".

The Jets regular season pp finished ranked 22 in the league.
The Jets regular season pk finished ranked 21 in the league.
The guy in charge of the pp gets fired and the guy in charge of the pp gets promoted to head coach.
Talk about a fine line. It's too bad for Lauer that he couldn't squeeze into 20th spot on the pp. He would have been the Jets next head coach.
