SCF Gm #5, KINGS(3 vs. RANGERS(2 - Friday 6/13/14....WE are 2014 SC CHAMPS!!!--Pt II

A clip of an interview with Doug Wilson on NHL tonight about a half hour ago. On what happened to the Sharks, what the difference was and how to fix it.

There’s a comment that was made by a group of my players, that we were co-workers and not teammates. Really, what that means is they really hadn't dug down to be there for each other and commit to what teammates have to do to be successful. Look at L.A. The things that they did, the game sevens where they just stuck with it, coming back against us, taking care of each other. Ours was somehow lost a little bit. Our players acknowledged it, I've listened to them, our coaches have acknowledged it. That’s what I’m talking about when it comes to culture, is being a great teammate and playing the way that we need them to play, not the way that they want to play.

It’s partly the people, it’s party the environment, it’s partly how they’re managed and coached. It’s a combination of all those things. There’s teams in this league that are very talented teams. But, why do you finish it off [like] the San Antonio Spurs in basketball, and the L.A. Kings? They were a close team and did all those little things for each other. Sometimes the pilot light goes out, sometimes there’s injuries, sometimes people need to look in the mirror and wake up again. That’s usually what you’re looking at. But, it comes back to teammate-to-teammate, saying, ‘you know what? I’ll be there for you.’ And, we didn't have it.

That last comment says it all...and that 'faith' never shined brighter than in the glow of that silver cup.
Good for Dean...or as MR referred to him' our Godfather'.

Good luck on trying to cultivate that, Wilson. You can't make your players feel that way about each other.

On another note, one of my favorite prediction threads from this season.

From an article in the LA Times today;

The Kings visited the White House — along with the MLS champion Galaxy — after winning the title in 2012, and another trip will be on the schedule at some point next season. Lombardi said he also would like to bring the team and the Stanley Cup to Ottawa for a visit with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, noting the sizable number of Canadian-born players on the Kings roster.

I don't think I've heard of a non-Canadian team doing that. But I bet the Canadian born players would love that. DEan always thinking...

As much as I dislike Harper, I think this is a good idea. Also, it's funny because the Cdn based teams just suck so much and this might be the only way to get a team to Parliament Hill.

Interested to see who the Kings play in the home opener. If it's Chicago again, that could be something. SJ may or may not look the same. Anaheim would make sense. Vancouver, Phoenix, St.Louis, all good too. Last time it was supposed to be the Rangers, so, who knows. They might throw the Bruins or Flyers in there, just to get an east coast audience to watch on NBC.

It'll be fun to see every team try to take a shot at the Kings. Didn't quite get the last time. With the extended period between the Final and the start to the season, and no eastern teams, etc. The Cup banner was raised at like noon. This time the Cup defense will be done right.

‏@keeperofthecup Some stats from the locker room on the #stanleycupchampions @lakings @HockeyHallFame @NHL. Good reason why they won!

He put in a photo from the whiteboard in the lockeroom:

We have our answer.

The NHL Network is showing the Chicago series right now. As much as I love the fact we won the cup, to me it was much more satisfying beating the Hawks, who as we all know , have been a huge thorn in our side.

Hah that's a great shop.

So watching NHL Tonight and they were talking about Penguins tank job to get Super Mario. It got me thinking about how the Penguins also were...fortunate...enough to get Crosby and Malkin as well. The Penguins at one time had Mario and Jagr and they won two Cups together. The current Pens have who many believe are the top 2 players in the league and have won once.

Now put into perspective what our team has done in the last 3 seasons. They equaled the Cup count of one of the top 5 players ever and doubled the Cup count of the 2 "best" players in the league during their prime years. I remember watching the 2009 Cup Final and thinking, holy cow those teams are good. Our team isn't even in the playoffs and I can't imagine ever seeing our team play at the level of those two finalists. I was so impressed by the skill level and teamwork I saw and it was frankly quite depressing.

Fast forward to now and our team has been better than both Detroit and Pittsburgh over the last 3 seasons and has done something neither of those Pens and Wings rosters could do, win 2 Cups in 3 years. The Kings will likely be better than both again next year as well. This truly is the golden age of the Kings and thank goodness we have the best GM in the business. GM of the year typically goes to the GM whose team overachieves one year and vanishes. Our guys will get nominated for awards and never win them...or HFBoard polls for that matter :sarcasm:. But they've got Stanley Cup rings and Conn Smythes. Our boys put the Kings organization on the map and in the history books. When the Kings win, they not only win, they break records. They keep the Elias Sports Bureau in business.

I had the exact same feeling in 2009, watching them and thinking that I had never seen our team play anywhere close to that level of hockey, and that we had such a long way to go. It almost seemed unachievable.

So many great players and teams never win anything, some only win it once in their 20 year careers, now Dwight King and Trevor Lewis are two time Stanley Cup champions :)

It's disgraceful and it definitely taints their two titles in the 1990s.

I don't know of any similar tank job to get Crosby and Malkin but I would definitely take a look at those seasons 2001-2006 as they sucked bad again, but at least their was a pattern to their suckiness.
