I'm not panicking or anything but Tavares and Marner have to produce. It feels like it's simplifying it a lot and it's very early... but if you make that much money in a cap world, you can't have many nights where the puck doesn't go in. We need them to play up to their abilities and take over games a whole lot more.
I think Marner is in his own head. There was a play yesterday where we had 2 guys open but Marner took a wild hack shot at the puck instead, sending it 2 miles wide. He doesn't usually do stuff like this. Hopefully with two days to clear his head (oops, 1) we see vintage regular season Mitch on Saturday.

I am not so sure that is true. It is not a regular thing, but happens often enough to say that it is probably not an anomaly anymore.

We gon bounce back real tight on this one sire! The leafs finna pay back that last night's 48 shot lose. Jacki-O will play in goal and Win, big tyme baby  Our CURRENT THUGS will also pummel that thang hard on this one. Expect a huge nights from ritchie and bunting for example. Also a guaranteedo: Tavares and Marner scoring. With the nylanders. Congratulations y'all! Invest HARD.

Thanks coach, you da man!

I gotta admit, I am still butt hurt from Babcock's firing. Coach Babcock was the only one who knew what he was doing in the organization.

Shanahan does not seem to have a brain. He's like a politician, not really a hockey executive in the NHL. Look at the players he got. They were all similar to him.

Shanahan was a power forward, that could skate, thug tough, and he could score. Later in Shanahan's career, he was not as fast, and he mellowed, but he could still score, and was a top offensive player in the league. He headed for the net, stood around there, took one stride either way in the slot, and a talented Detroit forward would pass him the puck in the slot and Shanahan was wise enough to be open and they kept scoring and won cups.

Little surprise Shanhan would get similar ass bad players like Simmonds, big and good in front of the net, and Ritiche, big, tough, very thuggish, good hands. They just got to head for the slot, create just a little space for themselves, and the golden boys with the nice hair from their stylist, will get them the puck and they will score, like how Shanahan used to do it.

That is the good part, but also the part that disturbs me about management. Shanahan still knows what a good power forward is, but what about defense and goal? He only played wing after all.

If this team hits the skids at any point this year, it could turn into one of those epic Leafs management circuses. They will twerk it good!

Like the ancient wisdom taught, give the fans bread and give'em circuses.

You da man, coach!

Go Leafs Go!

:naughty:

I think they should rotate the bottom 3 for a bit. I think Sandin should sit and out Liljegren in for a few with Dermott. Then switch out to keep both of them fresh. Maybe once in a while go Sandin Liljegren on certain match ups.

Problem is that Sandin/Dermott have been their best pairing so far.
It's Muzzin/Holl that have been shaky, and Reilly/Brodie pretty meh.

Tavares struggled for long stretches early in the year and then turned it on down the stretch, why gave me some comfort that we aren't dealing with a declining player given his struggles aren't linear and in one direction (down). There was also the talking point that he was building his defensive game, yada yada so all's well that ends well. But, kind of begs the question how effective a lead by example guy when he goes through these massive ups and downs in effectiveness. It's not a comfort that there are more than a few nights on the calendar that a Joe Thornton or a Jason Spezza will look better than him.

I expect leafs to win and leafs fan forget how bad the previous games were

Until ofcourse we lose again in similar fashion

Rinse and repeat

That is likely because that Sandin/Dermott pairing doesn't need to handle any tough minutes. Rielly-Brodie and Muzzin-Holl are going up against the other teams' best and are starting in their own end more often than not.

If Sandin-Dermott was not the best pairing, there is either a problem with them or the other guys are the elite of the elite.

I won't forget anything. I will be practical as always. Win or lose, it will be game 3 of 82. What will happen is that or chronic complainers will not care about a win saying they are waiting for the playoff, but if they lose, the will continue to whine about a particular player, GM, Coach or contract.

I dont understand why Spezza cant play higher in the lineup and more minutes. His skill, effectiveness, and effort level are better than Tavares, Kerfoot, or Kampf. Is it because he is older and needs his minutes held back. I noticed that he was one of the few who didnt look like he was skating in mud in both games. Its nice to see that he is on the first powerplay unit. Its also a sin that he is saddled with two of the worst players on the team in Simmonds and Amadio.

I feel like some coaches after they're with a team long enough for whatever reason seem to get it in their head that any change will mess with chemistry etc. They get stagnant. Babcock did the same thing. They keep the same lineup for way too long. Spezza should get a few more looks but at least he's getting more powerplay time.

In this case it's way to early in the season to be worried. It's always about the 20 game mark that's a good indicator of what's there.

However last season for example with the powerplay... sure you have other coaches that run them but that was a bunch of bullshit. Stayed the same for way to long. Coaches need to know when to adjust. I feel like Keefe was willing to do that more in the beginning.

We'll see how he adjusts once Matthews is back and if they keep having these sluggish starts. Yes it's only been 2 games but last year at times sluggish starts were a thing. It's part of what kills them in the playoffs.

Any chance Matthews plays tonight?

I saw someone mentioning in an earlier thread it was a possibility ... but no idea. Hoping there's an update soon. If I see something I'll post it.

Hopefully he'll be ready to go. That'd be nice. 1st game of the season against Ottawa for him. Maybe put up another 4 spot.

The Muzzin - Holl pairing looked terrible.

Muz has lost a step or two. He was never a great skater to me begin with unfortunately his physical play has also diminished

I remember him throwing good hits back few years ago

Let's hope Campbell stays healthy, tonight we have Alex Bishop from the great U of T hockey team backing up Mrazek due to cap... Lol

Looks like Lilly in for Holl tonight. Hopefully he plays well and if Holl is out a for a little while maybe his play will come into question
Excellent, where did you hear that?

So no Matty then... too bad but I think they'll be ready to go tonight.

Many people getting their wish with Lilly too. Is Holl banged up or are they actually going to rotate the bottom few. Hopefully they do. Need to see what the other young guys can do.
