I'd imagine AV is a bit shell shocked at how badly Sather lied to him.

"Oh yea, the whole foundation is there, these guys police the locker room themselves, they just need a guy that will unshackle the offense."

Veteran Leadership? What veteran leadership?

Richards? Dude has a one way ticket out of town this offseason - why should be sacrifice for this team?

Callahan? Hes off the ice more than hes on it

Nash? Skilled guy, but he couldnt lead anyone out of a paper bag.

Staal is out as well.

I agree. That said, for some reason, this team looks like they have never met one another. There's no cohesion and little ability to read one another. And that is not simply an effort thing.

I totally agree.

Remember how close the 11-12 team was? ALL of those guys were always going out and going to dinner/tweeting pics, etc. Those guys were so close-knit, and Torts had them really caring about each other. They all had a bond. These guys...not sure any of them are even friends anymore.

Nash trade/letting Prust go cracked the glue

Gaborik trade cracked it more

Firing Torts destroyed the bond, entirely

..and this is what we're left with

Sather is the worst GM and assessor of a team's chemistry in human history.

I totally agree.

I was referring more to the way the look on the ice.

These moves are the kind of moves I mean when I say that the moves were made in a vacuum.

I hear you, but I think they go hand-in-hand. Relationships off the ice mean the group is tight, and that can affect play on the ice.

This is just a bunch of random hockey players skating around like lost little children who can't find Mommy in Lord & Taylor.

Think about it. His previous success was built on a once in a lifetime happenstance. A core in Edmonton that consisted of guys like Gretzky, Messier, and Coffey.

In the 25 years since, when has he shown any ability to build a team not consisting of some of the greatest players to ever play?

Give me a god damn break

Before he signed the contract did he just go to NHL.com real quick and check some stats and say "sure...looks good!"?

You mean to tell me he was completely blindsided by the state of the team he was taking over? I don't buy it. Is that what you would do when offered multi-million dollar contract for a position of high responsiblty within an organization?

Even if he was mislead he had a full offseason and training camp to figure out what he had. It is almost Christmas and this team looks like they all met yesterday.

Sather has been a horrible GM for a while..no one is denying this and its effect on the franchise.

But so far, AV has been a terrible coach.

Nobody is beyond blame. But there's been one constant over the last 13 seasons. And the man put this team together, with this roster and selected this coach. Expecting AV to give a heart to Poulitot and Pyatt and Brassard and J Moore is about as insane as expecting AV to turn change these players into offensive forces.

So you're ackowledging that AV has underperformed as a headcoach?

No one's realistclly expecting him to turn those guys into Callahans and McDs

However, I dont think its unrealistic to expect this team to be competative and not be completely lost on the ice nearly halfway through the season.

I'll acknowledge that everyone has underachieved. And when that's the case, it's the architect's fault.

I honestly feel bad for you and the few other lost souls who continue to blame the coach for this roster.

go ahead and quote where i've done that...i've repeatedly ackowledge that Sather has assembled a sub-par roster

Does this team really look like its only problem is a lack of talent? Even the MSG choir boys Sam and Joe were talking about how the team looks like it has no idea what its doing.

If you think thats all on Sather then I dont know what to tell you.

Glen, picks up phone and dials: Hello Mess, how ya doing?

Mess: Fine, Glen, what's up?

Glenn: Just wondering if you still think you can motivate this $%^&ing team and get them back to winning?

Mess: Sorry, Glen, that ship has sailed. But have a nice Holiday season and good luck in the new year. HANGS UP.

Glen: Mess, Mess, ya still there?

Picks up phone and dials again: Hello AV, how ya doing?

AV: Not well, Glen. This team you handed me has no desire to win and I can't figure out how to motivate them.

Glen: Don't worry. I had this problem back in 1980 and I know exactly what to do. I'll be down in a few minutes and we can discuss it over some cigars and a pack of chewing gum.

AV: Sure hope you're bringing a young 99 and 11 with you.

Glen: Sorry, that ship has sailed. But I can show you some really nice rings. And I'll bring a map so we can plan out the parade route.

AV: HANGS UP.

Glen: AV, AV, are you there?

.......

And so continues the sage of The Great Disaster, circa 1941-2014 (-1)

I honestly feel bad for you and the few other lost souls who continue to blame the coach for this roster.

Again, not his fault, but he was the WRONG coach for this team, period.

Everything is a disaster, right now.

"This is a bad hockey team"

Merry Christmas!!

I honestly feel bad for you and the few other lost souls who continue to blame the coach for this roster.

But... If we JUST hired Lavi then he could give guys like Pyatt/Pouliot some passion!

I felt that when Torts was fired the team had enough leadership to motivate themselves on the ice. I was wrong.

We, my friend, are now on the same page.

Which brings us to the orignial point of this thread: It's pretty weak for AV to defelct blame to Sather when he too bears plenty of responsibility for the piss-poor shape this team is in.

I can sit here all day long and say Sather's the problem, but I'm part of the organizaiton. I dont have a stake in that responsibility.

Passing the buck is weak, and I'd expect more from a coach. In the same light, I'd be chewing out any player that deflected blame onto the coaches right now, despite my very obvious and outspoken disaproval of the AV's perfromance.

EVERY COACH IS THE WRONG COACH FOR THIS TEAM, so long as Sather spits out **** rosters.

What is so tough to understand about this. You've all had more than 13 years to chew on it.

I disagree. This team needs a disciplinarian to be successful. Torts was the right coach to maximize our crap roster. AV is the opposite of Torts, and the results are showing on the ice.

We all know Sather is the problem, but he's not going anywhere so we have to make do. AV was wrong hire.

Sather is the reason AV is here.

What do you expect AV to do? Inject heart into the heartless? Make the inconsistent consistent? Give skill to the skill-less?

A coach can only work with that he's given. If you're sitting around with 50 pounds of salmon, no matter how much your boss wants you to make filet mignon, you won't be able to.

When theres no longterm vision with the roster, it becomes so easy to meander from solution to solution.

We just had a disciplinarian here. Now thats the solution again?

Not sure we are.

So you'd be cool with a player coming out and saying "Well AV isn't running the type of system I need to play in to succeed"?

Or Sather saying, "well Dolan never fired me so it's his fault"?

You just acknowledged minutes ago that AV bears a decent amount of responsibility for the state of this team...why then is it okay to pass the buck?

And that analogy is terrible. It's not like Sather have him soccer players. He have him NHL hockey players and asked him to win a Stanley cup. Obviously we can all see that the players he was given aren't good enough for a cup, but they are certainly good enough to field a competitive squad that doesn't look like an expansion team.

The analogy is terrible because it doesn't fit your argument.

They want a puck control, up-tempo, push the pace team. Really? With Brian Boyle, Taylor Pyatt, Benoit Poulliot, Derek Dorsett and Dominic Moore doing on this team?

Exactly, but these clowns don't even fit into the old, defense-first system.

Sather just sucks at his job and now we have to watch this garbage and hate our lives.

While they may not fit on paper, the good thing about a defensive first approach is that it requires less thinking, less skill, less hard work.

get in skating lanes, get in shooting lanes, collapse on the goalie, throw everything out of the zone or whip it around the boards blindly.

Torts did a great job of dumbing the game down for the less talented and weaker IQ guys.
