Welcome to the offseason everyone. Couple of prospect notes for you. Owen Thomas, 2021 Sting 7th Rounder, is going to the Telus Cup (Canadian U18 Championship) with the Notre Dame Hounds. Lukas Fischer, 2022 Sting 11th rounder, was selected 6th overall by Cedar Rapids in the USHL Phase 1 Draft today. Cedar Rapids is the same team that we were able to beat out to get Ty Voit a few years ago.

From everything I have read Martone is one of those guys you want in the big games/playoffs. Does anything & everything to win. While it may sound easy not every player has that. I think of the 2018 team that lost to Kitchener. We had more skill, speed than them. It was very apparent. Simply put Kitchener's guys were willing to do anything to win while our top guys wanted no part of it.

It's honestly why these playoffs leave me excited for next season. I thought we saw a lot of guys show that willingness to win. They simply weren't as good as Windsor. But next season when hopefully we are an upper tier team that willingness to win is what can separate you in those series vs other great teams.

And if you think about Letang's interviews throughout the year but especially late he gets that & was prepping them for that. He got them to play a stingy, physical style & it bothered Windsor greatly. Get some firepower up front & this team could be real dangerous next season.

Do we grab another goalie in the Under-18 Draft so we can draft 3 players ?

Be interesting to see what Seca says of the U18 picks. Feel like this year will be a bit better than any because of the year off. Had to be guys who fell under the radar solely because they didn't play/get seen. Not gonna hold my breath but we've actually been one of the only good teams at it so hopefully we can nab someone that might push for a roster spot. Create even more mayhem for who makes the team lol.

As for taking a goalie may as well. Worked with Thornton!

Today's U18 Pick Cole Cooksey and Sting prospect Owen Thomas will both be playing at the Telus Cup (Canadian U18 Championship) from May 16 to May 22. Cooksey will be playing with the Mississauga Reps and Thomas will be playing with the Notre Dame Hounds.

No idea. I believe the final is usually televised by TSN. I'll let you know if I see anything as the tournament gets closer.
According to Hockey Canada it says that all games will be streamed on hockeycanada.ca , Mississauga starts the tournament on Monday the 16th at 11:30 AM MDT and Notre Dame Hounds also on Monday at 3:00 PM MDT (2 hours diff).

Nice. I didn't see that. Can't wait to watch Cooksey and Thomas. Of note Mississauga (Cooksey) vs. Notre Dame (Thomas) is on May 18 at 8:30PM ET.

Was able to find one game of Cooksey's from this season & it was pretty obvious he was to good for that league lol. He was borderline toying with the other team. He definitely has some things to work on (getting stronger, board work) but his skills look very high level. Good skater with silky hands & a very good shot (scored 42 goals.)

Who knows how it'll translate to the O but I am very excited to see him at the Telus cup & then training camp. Unfortunate he'll miss (as will Thomas) the rookie camp (may 21st) while playing in that tourney. But add him to the lengthy list of guys competing for a roster spot.

The goalie they selected also sounds interesting. Many were very high on him & thought he was a top goalie in his class going into his draft year but I guess he had some injury issues + covid year so there might be some potential there if he can get back to form pre-injury/covid. Our goalie coach Franky Palazzese might be becoming a gem for us. He is a goalie coach for so many kids that he really gets to see their development/growth, etc & relay that info to Seca&Co. Hopefully our luck in this draft continues!

The 3rd pick in the draft looks good too. 6’3 190 pounds he can play both wings. In his draft year he had 19 points in 20 games with the Halton hurricanes u16 aaa. This year he had 74 points in 47 games with The Hill Academy U18 Prep aaa and 42 goals. On his elite prospects profile he has a USHL practise jersey on so he might be interested in the American route. 👎

Seca said they are hoping to see him at the rookie camp so maybe he'll come like Voit did to see what we are all about.

He posted on his Instagram "super excited & honoured to be drafted by Sarnia! Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way."

So sounds like a guy who is interested. Don't wanna get to excited with it being a U18 draft but there seems to be some legitimate promise in all 3 guys. The training camp in September is gonna be one of the more intense, meaningful ones in years with the amount of guys who will have a chance to crack the roster. Loving what Seca has done in his 2 drafts (both the regular & U18) as GM.

It's not the players fault that the ohl wants to draft kids at 15,16.& sometimes it takes an extra year or 2 before players hit their stride.Hopeful he signs & plays well.

Cooksey had a 2 goals and an assist in a 6-5 OT loss. Thomas had an assist in a 5-4 OT loss. The two play each other tomorrow night at 8:30PM.

Cooksey is an absolute stud. Been watching the games & holy smokes the kid is nasty. 7 Points in 2.2 games & he's just making some of these guys look silly. Been compiling some clips (couldn't get his goals from yesterday as for some reason it isn't watchable.) His assist tonight was unreal. Destroyed the Dman with a huge hit, got it toe dragged the other Dman than backhand pass backdoor for a tap-in.

Still have to wait & see how it'll translate to the O but from a pure skill standpoint there isn't more than 2or3 guys on this team who could match his stick handling or creativity. Think there's a real chance they found themselves a gem. Very excited to see him in September.
