Lot's of room on that roster at the forward position. The more I look at the roster the more I'm in favor of selling. Draft pick cupboard is bare and all the OA's we thought we would have return are turning pro. I think we see Calvas and Salinitri both go by deadline.
Agree. You can also throw in Sproviero into the mix of who's most likely to be traded. I wonder if they'll pull the trigger and trade Ruzicka too. He will most likely turn pro next year.

Anyone been at camp for the scrimmages, seen any rookie or free agent surprises that have stood out and could make the team or veterans that look dominant? I can’t make the game tonight so an update would be great

My observations from the Black & White game are as follows: Reesor: Looked really good made some solid hits and smart passes, Hogue & Rees: Looked extremely undersized, DeGurse: Very physical smart hits nothing that took him out of the play, Hughes: Gave up too many rebounds and looks very stiff/awkward in net, McCombs: Very small, Kammerer: Good puck control & vision, Perreault: very slow skating & poor passing. Langevin: Good rebound control extremely quick and maneuverable, Ruzicka: Dirty dangles.

Entertaining Black and White game tonight. Also caught the White /Gold scrimmage earlier in the day.
I was quite impressed by some of the picks from the 2018 draft and would expect that there should be some additional signings from that class very soon.

In general under the Hatcher / Sinclair regime the focus on skill first players seems to really paying dividends. There is a noticeable difference from the bad old days in terms of the number of kids who can really play. It may take a bit of time to gel, and goaltending could be a wild card, but this team could surprise by the end of the year.

Don't want to read to much into a couple of scrimmage games but first round pick Jacob Perreault was very impressive and looks like the real deal. He appears to see the ice extremely well and he made some excellent passes. He looks like he will be an effective player immediately and will be an impact player going forward. The other added bonus is that he skates way better than his old man No Panic Yanic did when he was a first round pick for the Leafs years ago.

A couple of other of the 2002 born forwards that stood out for me were fifth rounder Theo Hill who scored goal and Nolan Burke. Both could really fly and were highly skilled and look like they could step into the league now.

I would expect that the team would want to sign at least one of the 02 born defencemen and keep them with the big club. The player who looked good was ninth rounder Brendan Kennette. He played with a lot of poise and made a lot of good decisions. I liked the fact that unlike some of the other 16 year olds he wanted the puck and didn't appear to be intimidated at all by playing with the older players.. His skating looks like it could use some work but he is another pick that appears like he has very good hockey sense. My first impressions are that for a ninth rounder he looks to be a very, very good pick .

The other 02 defenceman who could get a card was Nolan Dillingham - Morelli. He looked good in the White - Gold game but wasn't in the lineup in the later game. Not sure why. I'd say from what I saw Kennette should have the inside track to make the team.
I would think the Sting would sign one of these kids and keep them with the big club and sign another and send them to the Legionaires.

The battle for the backup goalie spot should be interesting . Coffin played really well in the Black / White game but Langevin was more impressive earlier in the day. It will be a close call and they will probably keep both kids around for awhile yet.

Some other random thoughts after watching a couple of days of training camp -

- if Kammerer continues on this development trajectory over this season and next he will likely ne a high round NHL pick. He should be the number one defenceman on the Sting by the end of the year.

- would love to see Perreault play on a line with Rees . Would be a real treat for fans to see those 2 play together on a regular basis.

- a couple of high round picks from last year should be on the bubble to make the team this year. Personally, I'd like to see 3 of the 02's be with the big club this year. It's great to build the team around the 01 draft class but if some of the 02's are better players go with them. Some kids that are stars in minor hockey aren't when they get to the OHL.

- Ruzicka is an enigma . He is big and highly skilled as any player who has played for the Sting but as for his mental approach for the game not so much. Somehow Hatcher needs to light a fire under this kid.

- Reesor is a keeper and will definitely make the team this year.

- Given the quality of draft picks that the team has made it's a killer not having second and third rounders . These picks could be real stars . They need to get some of those picks back.

- Not sure where Salinitri was during camp but if he's back it will be a huge bonus for the team this year.

- Hatcher will need to figure outa way to cut down on the shots on net this season. Fazio bailed the team out too many times last year.

- Hough could be an impact player this year.

- Hatcher is a better player than a lot of people give him credit for and looks like he has grown another few inches over the summer.

- Some of the really small players looked out of their element at the camp. They should stop picking so many of these kind of kids.

How did mccombs look does he make the team? Who looks the best out of Hughes, coffin, and langevin? Ya I thought reesor would make the team I thought he played well last year, Hatcher got bigger?... could lead to some monster hits and a very nasty player infront of our own net which I think this team will need. Salinitri was atca family wedding, thought he would be back for last nights game. How does Eliot, grima, and Calvas look? Hogue do anything special? Will the exhibition game be on tv Saturday?

Well Robp based on what I saw at training camp ( which can be misleading, and strictly my opinion ) I would answer your questions like this-

McCombs - he's signed so he will be with the organization in some capacity. Frankly, I was not overwhelmed by what I saw so IMO he could be on the bubble for the 4th line Centre job. If I were Hatcher Id be taking a hard look at an 02 kid like Hill for that job.

Goalies - None stood out beyond the others although Langevin looked better early. This is going to be the wild card position and they will need one of these guys to emerge as a true number one for the team to be competitive. It's has the potential to be the team's Achillies heel.

Eliot - played decently. Tried to blow around guys with the puck during the Black / White game which definitely not his thing.
Grima. Solid. Should slot into the 3 or 4 spot. Calvas . Ditto if they can find a spot for him. He could be the odd man out among the OA's .

Hogue may also be in a battle for a spot. Would slot him in around 6 on the depth chart, He will need to seriously improve his defensive game if he's going to stick long term.

Last year the game on the Labour Day weekend was on tv I believe.

One other thing. I couldn't disagree more with one of the other postors comments about Perreault. The kid is a great passer and can fly. My prediction is that eventually he will become a star in this league.

Ya I’ve heard great things about Perrault, did Rees look improved since last season... faster stronger? Did Guy look faster ? His speed was his biggest weakness last year, and is Kammerer looking like a stud?

I'm not sure about anyone else but Will Reddick looked fantastic last night. Aside from a horrible pass during OT he was very smart with his puck control and passing. He made a number of high skill passes tape to tape. He is small, but he's quick and shifty. He reminds of Franco. He was well involved at both ends of the ice and his back checking was great. I'd love for the team to give him a longer look.

McCombs wasn't noticeable, Burke showed flashes.

Perrault already has a pro shot. I agree with jwalk's assessment completely. This kid is the real deal. Reesor should crack this line up. BIG boy and played with lots of composure. Really liked what I saw from him.

Hughes looked decent. Couple big saves and a couple bobblers. Langevin played great too. Coffin looks much improved as well. Love his size. It's going to be interesting to see how the goal situation pans out. Compared to other OHL teams our goaltending will be a weak spot for us.

Looking forward to seeing these guys in exhibition.

Have they announced any cuts? Is Cal Martin still in camp? How accurate is the preseason roster on their website? Only has 1 goalie listed.

Martin was in camp as of last night. He played well in the Black and White game. As a 99 it might be pretty tough for him to crack the lineup . He would have to unseat one of the established veterans and that probably wouldn't be easy.

I saw flashes from Martin, but then a lot of floating as well. I'd give him a few exhibition games to showcase. He's got speed that's for sure.

Thoughts on Egert taking up a full time spot? I'm not sold on the idea.

He'd be part of the bubble group battling for a job IMO. He's a good player but he is a 99 so the question is would management be better off giving him a spot or giving the job to an 01 or 02. The team isn't likely to set the world on fire this year so he could be in danger of losing his spot. This season should be a real development year for the younger players to make a push next year and in 2020.

Legionnaires sign Kennette, look for him to play big minutes with the Jr.B club and to practise and play a few games throughout the year with the sting aswell, looks like sting are wanting to keep a close eye on this prospect which means they really think highly of him.

Theo Hill looks to be signed with the Strathroy Rockets, id assume both players will live in or near Sarnia Since both their hometowns are over an hour drive from their Jr.B teams. I’d also assume they will both be seen at a lot of sting practises and in a few sting games this year.

Does that mean he is automatically on the stings opening night roster? I know they had guys signed last year that were playing tier 2 junior A

Nope, he will get a longer look throughout exhibition and when players go to NHL camps but a full time roster spot is not a for sure thing at all. He is playing tonight in London
