I looked at the last 5 years. Of the US players they drafted that were originally unsure to commit, 11th round Mitch Eliot ended up being an excellent pick. However 5th round Boka, 9th round Stevens, 12th round Kunin, 9th round McPhee, 8th round Mckenna, 12th round Cassidy, 1st round Weiss, 4th round Samuelsson, 7th round McLane, 11th round Giles, 12th round Hutchison, 4th round Miller, 6th Round Nodler, 9th round McCarthy all have not reported. In addition to that they also used 6th round (Peski) 3rd round (Belisle), 3rd (Hughes), 7th (Kellenberger) on Canadians who have NCAA intent. Thats a record of 1 for 18 in getting uncommitted players to sign. You could ice a good team just with the players who they drafted the last 5 years who didn't commit. IMO good use of picks to take a shot in rounds 10-15, thats where they got Boucher and Murphy but there are a lot of top 5 round picks that became nothing for them not because they didn't draft a good player but because the player had no intent of coming. If youre going to draft 18 players who intend to play NCAA in 5 years they need to land more than one of them.

That is very interesting. But how does that compare to other teams in the OHL?

I think Sinclair was very close to getting Quinn Hughes to report. Apparently he is close to that dad. Using a 3rd round pick on him is not a big deal for an American of that talent. Worth the gamble.

His brother went just before theydrafted Rees and if He would have made it to Sarnia in that draft I bet you would have had both Hughes brothers in Sarnia. Just my thought.

Taking risks on high end Americans can really pay off. Don’t fault him in the Hughes swing.

Great point. I am sure the Sting management think they have a good chance to get the kid to report before they draft them. We don't know exactly what is going on behind the scenes. For example, the Sting had Brandon Hope talk to Anthony DeAngelo to help get him to report. Hope was also another American that was planning on going to the NCAA before committing to the Sting.

And for Quinn Hughes, maybe he will be in camp this year being that he was just drafted into the NHL. One more week to wait to find out who reports.

Sting to make a "major off-ice announcement" at 11:00am today. New assistant coach? I know Dach Hiller moved on to Mississauga so the Director of marketing and communications role is void...but wouldn't call that major.

They always say it’s a major announcement and half the time it ends up being very minor, be nice to see something exciting announced! .... I know it’s an off ice announcement, but it would be nice to see them bring one or two Americans over ... good chance Weiss and Samuelsson aren’t coming, I think Weiss would be wise to come to Sarnia and play more hockey games... they can still work on nodler and miller and case McCarthy and others aswell.

Dach has been gone for almost a year now. Dach's role is being split between a few people including Gord, Jake and some of the interns. Major announcement was 25th season Logo (Nothing special) and new partnership with Imperial Oil.

I can understand the Sting hyping the partnership with Imperial, as they are paying $$$ to sponsor the games. The 25th anniversary logo was quite underwhelming. I would expect something incorporating all 3 of the logos used over the years (skating bee, flying bee and bee head) rather than a big 25 under the flying bee. The Sting can recycle this logo when they retire Kyrou's 25 in a few years - just swap 2014-2018 for 1994-2019.
A silver coloured 3rd jersey would have been nice, too

Really wish the city would help the club out, the sting put soo much money and effort trying to make this team succeed and making it an enjoyable time for fans, andthe city won’t spend a dime on the arena, I’ve heard ridiculous stuff from people that work in the restaurant say when they need light bulbs changed it takes forever or sometimes doesn’t get done because the city needs to approve the costs, also the sting wanting to build a new dressing room in the opposite end of the build so the arena can use the stings current space to build a unisex dressing room which is now a building code And the sting offering to split costs or work out an agreement on costs and the city turning their backs... to me it’s ridiculous, that stuff needs done

The Sting organization is a complete joke from top to bottom I can give numerous details but will save that for another time. Why should the city and more importantly OUR tax dollars go towards the Sting? The city of Sarnia has far more serious problems that need attending to than the arena. Just like any government everything takes time so the problems with the restaurant and other issues doesn't surprise me. The Sting owners have enough money they can contribute where us tax payers shouldn't have to. A fine example of that is the new scoreboard they put in this past season. Why does the arena need a unisex dressing room? Show me the code or law stating that as I would love to see it. As for the Imperial Oil partnership it just goes to show how much the team is hurting for money. Maybe if they knew how to run the organization and treat their fans better they wouldn't be hurting for money as much. Don't be surprised if this team moves in the next couple of years

Maybe not a law, but every new building is building one, for transgender and girls playing on both teams and I read the sting are unlocking their dressing room for those girls to use. The city also did their own arena management study in 2015 citing they need change room upgrades, that’s probably why the sting are willing to work with them. But ya I can see them moving in a few years, going to be a big nice extra empty facility left to rot some more.

I don't believe Sarnia has a big enough transgender community in order to use OUR tax dollars on something so foolish. I have no problems with transgender people however we should be using the tax dollars in this city for NEEDS not WANTS. Since you're well informed with the topic do you know if the Sarnia Arena (Legionnaires) recent renovations are including a mixed gender change room? There are enough arena's in the city where one can be built with fundraising dollars.

It’s not just a transgender change room, it would also be for girls who play on boys teams, I have no idea about how many girls or transgender players are in Sarnia but you also have to think about teams coming in from other locations in Ontario to play here, I know the girls playing on boys team are either traveling to the sting room when it’s unlocked for them or using the referees room which they have to travel across the Zamboni path to get back and fourth from. I’m not saying they have to do it or they should, alll I’m saying is that the sting brought up the idea to the city because The arena has had dressing room upgrades on their list for 3 years now, maybe it’s wise for them to do it in partner with the sting, maybe it’s not, it probably won’t get done

So what color is it in the sky in world that you live in ? You should be kissing the ground that the owners walk on for keeping this team in Sarnia . Last year with one of the best teams in the O support was 14th in the league.
This is clearly not a money making exercise.
Sarnia is the 2nd smallest market in the league . Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how this movie will end unless this improves . *****ing about a unisex bathroom is laughable. If you want to keep this team in Sarnia my advice is to keep your trap shut.

Awe did I hit a nerve? Like I've said before maybe if the team didn't treat their fans like shit as well as alienate them they would be in a better shape with better attendance. Having near the top ticket prices and an inaccessible arena (Location: Can't walk to it, Far end of the city, buses stop running before games end, etc...) are just some of the reasons why the team's attendance is so poor. Maybe if the owners actually listened to the fans as well as try to fix the previous owner(s) mistakes the franchise would be in a better shape. How do you figure Sarnia is the 2nd smallest market in the league? North Bay, Erie, Owen Sound, Saginaw, Sault Sainte Marie ALL have smaller populations compared to Sarnia. Barrie has the highest unemployment rate in Canada yet their franchise seems to be just fine.

Here we go what? I'm voicing my opinion regarding numerous issues. I'd love to hear your opinion.

It's so easy for you to sit there and bash an organization. You cannot pin everything on the current ownership group. They walked into a complete S**t show and since have turned this organization around big time. There is still work to be done, no doubt about that but the effort we have all complained about is finally there. Hatcher and Legwand paid out of their own pockets over $500,000 for the new score board and led banner around the rink to enhance fan experience. I believe both these guys are committed to Sarnia and have shown us they are. My beef is with the City of Sarnia. Here we are paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars for integrity commissioners over BS year after year. Hiring contractors outside of town who don't give a crap about our city to do a half ass job on large projects only for us to have to pay more for someone to come and fix it after. The waste of money in this town is ridiculous. You have the Sting ownership that are willing to split costs on these upgrades, have gone out and secured a huge partnership with Imperial Oil, put a competitive team on the ice and have enhanced fan experience. Then you have the city who will repaint the walls on floors every 5 years and charge a stupid city surcharge on your ticket prices.

Having an OHL team in Sarnia is a privilege. If we want it to stay then we go and support it and the city needs to get on board as well. Plain and simple.

It's also 2018.....time to get with the times whether you agree with them or not. I just had to take a 2 hour online course about gender identity to coach hockey this season. It doesn't matter if there is 1 kid or 100 kids who identify as transgender playing hockey, a safe and comfortable place to change and shower should be provided. Same goes with the girls teams. They often get bottom of the barrel for everything. I'd love to know how many kids have quit hockey because of the fear of bullying or how uncomfortable they are changing in the dressing rooms because of who they identify themselves as. EVERYONE deserves to play the greatest game on earth and should have the opportunity to do so in a safe and secure environment free of any form of harassment or judgement.

I completely agree and support everything you said. My issues with the current ownership are my own problems they main not pertain to every fan as I am just trying to explain my current and ongoing issues I've had to deal with them examples: Not having security at the arena, Over serving of alcohol, Unwillingness to accommodate somebody with a disability that regularly goes to games, Not replying to urgent phone calls, texts, emails and much more. Every team in the OHL except (Correct me if I'm wrong) Peterborough, Erie, London, Flint have arena's owned by the City's the teams play in. It shouldn't just be the city and public's tax dollars that get put into the team. Owners should put in money too (which Sarnia has example: Scoreboard) The team struggles to sell out games because the majority of the demographic in this city are low income. Raising ticket prices as well as (Taxes, fees/charges) will make it even harder to put people in the seats. The team choose how to price their single game, flex packs, season tickets while the fees/charges go directly to the city of Sarnia. However there are other ways to absorb the costs of keeping ticket prices what they were last year or even lowering them like concession prices, souvenirs, etc.... The more people you get into the arena to watch games the more money you make with small things like I stated above. I see a lot of people bringing in their own drinks, snacks, etc... That could be completely eliminated with bag checks at the door. I could go on and on but I think everybody can get the point of what I'm trying to say.

Yes I agree plenty of changes and upgrades still need to be made in this organization, but the last ownership left the new ownership with so many problems that it will take years to fix them all, but the ownership has forked out a lot of money for the new jumbo tron and led banner and they remodeled their dressing room when they bought the team, and also the on ice product has been much better since they have arrived. I personally think the city needs to do a better job maintaining their own arena.

Yes agree. I really do wonder if everybody at the city even have the slightest clue of how badly they need the Sting here. If the team leaves it's going to be like when GM left Oshawa. Those who work for the city don't realize how much money and many other things the team generates for businesses and everything else in general especially on game nights. With the new Nova plant being built once it's done and all the jobs/contracts ended this city is going to be in even worse shape. Artificial inflation at it's finest. Everything has skyrocketed in the city and it's going to get even worse in the coming years. I can't even comprehend what will happen if the Sting leave within a few years before or after Nova expands. But lets mind our business sit back and relax as we watch more Taco Bell's, KFC, and other useless stuff being built while buildings, houses, etc... remain empty.

I think Sinclair was very close to getting Quinn Hughes to report. Apparently he is close to that dad. Using a 3rd round pick on him is not a big deal for an American of that talent. Worth the gamble.

Taking risks on high end Americans can really pay off. Don’t fault him in the Hughes swing.

I respectfully disagree with that. Quinn is property of Sarnia. Jack is property of Mississauga. If it was as simple as having both of them on the same team then Mississauga benefits from declaring Jack non-committal then getting a comp pick plus a large return from Sarnia. It's that simple to get both of them in Sarnia. On the other side, Sarnia could have got a huge return for Quinn for him to play with his brother in Mississauga. If they were willing to play OHL they would have got it done. Quinn would probably have a shot to make Vancouver but he's not willing to give up his NCAA eligibility to try.

That is very interesting. But how does that compare to other teams in the OHL?

That is a good question. It's hard to find a team that is close to the boarder on the Canadian side but isnt a "high profile" team like London, Kitchener and Windsor. SOO has had bargaining power being a contender lately. Niagara would probably be a good comparison. Guelph would probably be the closest comparison in the West.

Last 5 years Guelph had 2nd rd Luke Kirwan who they traded for a good return and played OHL, 6th rd Kyle Rhodes who eventually came among the two players who either played for Guelph or gained them a return due to drafting them. On the other side 11th Zach Osburn, 4th Cole Gallant, 10th Derek Daschke, 6th David Farrance, 13th David Tomeo, 7th Phil Lapointe, 8th Will MacKinnon, 11th Richard Ledek all did not play for Guelph. So Guelph had very marginally better success while selecting less players, and most importantly only one pick in the first five rounds.

Niagara is essentially a border city in the Eastern Conference. Here is their last 5 years. 3rd round Stephen Dhillon, 12th round Drew Hunter, both would end up playing for the Ice Dogs. 14th Michael Montambeault, 6th Trent Frederic, 7th Austin Rueschoff, 6th Josh Norris, 11th Hunter Canestra, 5th Zach Borgiel, 6th Adam Steinwold, 10th Jack Randl, 11th Brady Smith, 14th Matt Staudacher, 12th Ben Kraws all have not played for Niagara. So Niagara had more success than Sarnia drafting less.

Most importantly both teams only took one american who didn't report in the top 100 in five years. Both teams went 1 for 2, 50% in this scenario. All the rest were outside the first five rounds. I stand by the idea that if you're going to take that many americans in the first five rounds, you have more success. Sarnia went 0 for 6 on first five round NCAA commits.

It's honestly not that much of a discount. $230 divided by the 10 games equals $23. Regular single game tickets are $22 plus HST which should equal $24.86 a saving of $1.86 per your 10 tickets should equal $18.60 so you will save under $20 compared to buying them at the box office or at the mall. I believe those 2 options don't charge you service fees like buying them online does. That also doesn't include the time and gas spent going to the box office each time you want to trade in your flex tickets for the game you want.
