I go back before that, when it was just two teams in the late 70s, early 80s.

For the Isles it was Jiggs McDonald & Ed Westphal. Ed was a bit of a clown, way too much of a homer, but Jiggs was actually very good.

Before Sam, the Rangers had Jim Gordon & The Big Whistle, Bill Chadwick. I was really young, but I recall Jim Gordon was excellent, a real pro's pro who also did the radio for the NY Giants. I remember Gordon way more for his Giants work, but again he was just really good at whatever he did. Really unheralded, which is a shame. Chadwick I don't remember as vividly, but I do remember he was entertaining.

I became a teenager when Sam took over for good & he's been the only guy since the Rangers became my favorite local team & that was the same year hockey surpassed baseball to become my favorite sport. It's been so long, we almost took him for granted. I'll miss him dearly.
Thanks for sharing, I love that.

Jim & Bill are before my time, but - obviously - are in my blood, in my DNA, as part of the Rangers heritage. I've watched so many clips & even a handful of full games from the 70s with them on the call. What a lineage of broadcasting excellence we have...

This is what I love about sports. It's community. It's history. And it comes as part of the package. You become a Rangers fan today, and you are part of the group. Part of the family. You are part of our 100 year history. We can all take pride in the amazing people who have contributed and made this organization what it is today.

There are plenty of warts. There is plenty of toxicity. This morning is a healthy reminder of that. But, in my opinion, the team, the community, the comraderie supersedes that. I'm so grateful to be a NYer, to be a Rangers fan, and to have the Rangers as an integral part of my existence.

He will be in the studio occasionally next season I thought John seemed to say.

Did anybody hear Sam thank James Dolan? I didn't.
I believe another snub was given to Phil Esposito.
Tonight was the 2nd time when his name has been mentioned to Sam he only complements Esposito’s playing career.
Never there friendship or their work in the booth.

Sam is a gentleman amongst gentlemen. He will never ruffle any feathers. I could not tell you exactly what he thinks of Dolan. I CERTAINLY can tell you what his family & close friends think of Dolan. It's exactly what you would expect.

Sam ADORES Espo, and vice versa. You're reading too much into this.

To Sam only (everyone else in this team/org can never be seen from again and I wouldn't care).

I rather play Robertson over Soucy. What a waste of trading a 3rd round pick. Dom Moore was a former 3rd round pick. What a bonehead trade
its really a late round second pick. Just a horrible trade and that's not 20/20 hindsight. Close to where Will Cuylle was picked. Nah we didn't need another pick in the top 60ish.

Guy is basically another Nemeth.

Sam deserved every bit of that result. I'm happiest for him because I'm sure deep down he's as frustrated as the rest of us, but calling a win, in his office, is a great ending to a shitshow season.

Kenny getting a chance is great. Faust is going to get his fair share as well, since Kenny has many obligations as TNT's #1, NFL games, I'd guess the occasional Knicks game. Both are fantastic.

NY has seen some great broadcasters, and Sam is near the top. This current group might be across the board the best. We've lost Sam Rosen and John Sterling to retirement in the past 7 months. Legendary careers spanning generations.

Gordon & Chadwick were great (and, as someone stated, very entertaining). Marv Albert was also very good.

I got some great news in my personal life yesterday, almost simultaneously with this season ending, and it really feels like this shitstain of a season was just a humiliation ritual to get to this point. I believe in such things.

Thank you Sam Rosen, Thank you Chris Kreider. The end of an era for fans of a certain age like myself. It's fitting to me that they go out together. When I look back, Ill only remember the good times. LGR.

Congrats on the news, hopefully it helps to put this season in the rear view

So, I go even further back. I believe that when I first became a hardcore fan in the early 1960s, Winn Elliot called the rare television game. What I do recall was that there was a time the Ranger broadcaster was ill, and they had to import an announcer from Canada for a few months. Norm Jarry reminded me so much of Foster Hewitt, the legendary Toronto broadcaster whom I listened to, when atmospheric conditions were right, on the radio. I believe Jarry went on to become the mayor of his town in Quebec. During the Francis era, the main TV guy was Tim Ryan. Marv Albert did most of the radio broadcasts; at the start, believe it or not, only the last 10 minutes of periods 1 and 2 were aired, plus all of period three.
When MSG and cable got going, Jim Gordon and Bill "the Big Whistle" Chadwick (he was a HOF referee) did the games. Gordon was a first-rate play-by-play guy. Chadwick could be outrageous in his opinions but is most famous for continually saying "shot the puck, Barry," referring to the Ranger D Barry Beck.
Sam, of course, is the best.
