It's not as far from the truth as you might initially think, if we judge good vs bad games via a SV% threshold and say anything under 0.900 is a bad game and anything equal to or greater then 0.920 is a good game then he's had 23 good games and 22 bad ones. Notably this year he's at 11 good and 5 bad.
It's quite unfair (and very silly to be perfectly honest) to judge his performance simply by save percentage. Last year was a complete tire fire of piss poor defensive coverage by the Habs and crazy amounts of quality chances by the opposition.

But Monty's technique is definitely better this year than last. His confidence level is getting higher and higher.

His technique really isn't any different. He has more experience and his wrist is healthy this year after surgery. These factors and playing for a less hopeless team has given him more confidence. He's still young by goalie standards and developing.

He does seem faster side-to-side and some of his reads (i.e., seeing that cross-seam pass take shape a split-second faster and not just puck-watching so he pushes from post to post quicky enough) are clearly better.

Just watch his last year's games. You will see.

And he played with an injured wrist which required off season surgery.

It's no different then a forward playing well but not getting points, nothing's perfect not even the eye test. It's merely something that can give you the general idea and challenge someone's eye test since it's common for people to remember the bad games more then the good ones.

I love what I am seeing of him right now. I hope he can become a solid starter for us. But we have to aknowledge that the games are meaningless right now. I mean for the team. Even if management thinks he can do the job long term, and I think they are, I would still try to get a goaltender in the next draft with our 2nd rounder or a late first we would get in a TDL trade.

In an interview last off-season, he said that it took him time to adjust to the speed of the NHL. So a lots of it was just experience.

He also improved in other aspects thought.

To be fair, he was playing good early on when the team waa doing good and the season wasn't lost. But I agree that we should always be on the look out at the draft for a goalie with good upside as its gonna take a few years anyway for the goalie to develop. I see Monty being a good 1B goalie for a competitive team. Hes someone who can step in when needed and play for long stretches but someone who shouldnt be the only #1 goalie on the team.

it's nice to see the development show in Monty's game. Still don't think his ceiling is crazy high, but could be a solid starting goalie.

Is he this good or on a heater? Just a few months ago you all were saying he was waiver wire talent.

He showed some flashes of being really good last year too. He's showing improved consistency this year although he still has his spells.

I want to see him get an extended look to get a better idea of what he is, but Jake Allen is in the way.

My concern is MSL will go right back to 4GPG Allen.
Monty deserves the next start

Can he save these performances for next year? I am A ok with just missing the playoffs next year if we get a top 4 pick this year.
If he can continue progressing the way he did this offseason and season, I am very intrigued to see how he performs next year. His positioning has improved a lot this year and he looks much calmer in net.

He's obviously on a hot streak right now because if he played like this all season he would end up in the Vezina and Hart conversation. The real question is when he's no longer on a hot streak will he still be a legitimate starting goalie or not.

As for people claiming he's waiver wire level, let's just say lots of fans have a very skewed perception of what is normal for an NHL goaltender.

I'd rather he establish himself as a legitimate NHL calibre starter this year and pick 8th or 9th then pick 5th and still have giant hole in nets.

I'm one of Montys biggest fans but do you genuinely see him as being a starter on a playoff team in the future? A good backup alone is great.

I mean he's been really good for the past 3 weeks . Nothing crazy to be talked about. He was putrid last season and not good at all early this season. Seems like a fluke more than anything. Also playing with 0 problem because Allen is injured and the team is expected to miss the playoffs is not a really hard position be in.

You are right , Montombeau starting in the playoff would be a Leaf thing or Oilers

Who cares. Just being a guy who buys the Habs time while they work on rebuilding the team is fine by me.
